Welcome 2017 HELLOOO IDAHOOO!! 2017 is finally here. We hope you all had a fun time welcoming it in (and it s still snowing). We have a new team members for Idaho I would like to introduce starting with Dick Goetsch of Chapter G in Twin Falls as MEC, Gary Evans of Chapter T in Nampa as Treasurer, Raejean Widmer of Chapter H in Coeur D Alene as Newsletter Editor and Rich & Sue Davis of Chapter H who will be continuing on as Rider ED. As you can see we have someone from just about every chapter in Idaho. Thank you all for stepping up. There are still some positions that need filling and as time goes by this will happen. I am sure there are some members in Idaho who would like to help out and offer some of their skills and talents needed to keep Idaho great. I would like to thank all the previous team members in their commitment and all the help they provided to Idaho and wish them well in their new endeavors. Chapters are making changes to their teams so Chapter Directors be sure you fill out the proper forms and forward them to me via e-mail or snail mail. There is a change this year that effects all chapters and that is to send the District Director an MOU for all officer positions in the chapter every January. Make sure you use the MOU that asks for 2 signatures not only the officer but the spouse as well. This form can be found on the GWRRA web site, under officers, officer s connection, MOU (bottom of page). Any questions about this don t hesitate to call me 208-989-3722 or text if you prefer. This is the 40 th year for GWRRA so let s celebrate and why not plan some kind of an event within your own chapter. It could be something simple to an all-out motorcycle bash. Now is the time to make chapter resolutions or set a few goals to reach. For example, a good percentage of your chapter could take a CPR/FA Course or a TRC or ARC Course. If you need help in organizing them give me a call. I am here to help you and will do all I can for you. The Idaho Rally for now is scheduled for July 27-30 at Salmon. We are still working on the details and will advise as plans continue to develop. As Ray & Sandi Garris, GWRRA Directors say, We joined because of the bike, we stayed because of the people. Good evening Chapter Friends, It is with profound sadness that I share with you that our friend and fellow Chapter Member, Tom Galas, passed away on Sunday. He was on his way back to Idaho from California vacation when it is suspected that he sustained some type of medical emergency and rolled his Jeep outside of Winnemucca. A Celebration of Life will be held in March or April back in California. - Joey Goff

Winter Sports - Weiner Style Christmas and New Years have passed and I hope all was good for you, and that your wishes for the coming year are exceeded. I ve had a rough few months medically, but things are coming around. The last visit with the medic was encouraging. We have some yearend business to complete with some of the Chapter Educators, and I ll be contacting each of you within the next few days. GWRRA is ever evolving, and changes seem to be the norm. Please read the following article from the Jan 2017 Region I Newsletter written by Don Eide, Region Educator, detailing the coming changes to the Rider Ed training programs. As always, DRESS FOR THE SLIDE, NOT THE RIDE Rich Davis District Educator djrwd2@gmail.com 208-755-4466

Now that our motorcycles are in hibernation, or at least mostly resting during the next couple of months, it s time to talk about our GWRRA educational program. Over the last 5-10 years it has become obvious that changes to the University Program were needed. Our GWRRA members are tiring of the same old thing being presented and as instructors, our competency has suffered due to many of us not putting in enough time to prepare and bring our best to workshops and other training opportunities. Combining input from several different teams GWRRA developed the Instructor Training and Certification Program (ITCP), incorporating a built in single certification program. Other teams worked on evaluating the whole curriculum, and making recommendations. Teams were then formed to develop new training modules. What followed is perhaps the biggest change in training that has ever occurred in GWRRA. Training has changed from a lecture based PowerPoint focused classroom experience to an interactive, participant centered discussion based experience! Several of the new courses were presented at Wing Ding 38 this year. The response was overwhelmingly positive! As of October 1, 2016, Goldwing University Instructor Training is to be provided through the Instructor Training and Certification Program (ITCP). The ITCP has officially replaced the University Training Development Program (UTDP) for training Seminar Instructors for both Operations and Rider Education Programs. Presently, all University Seminars are under review and most are being re-formatted to comply with the new University Training Module system. In order to present one of the new or reformatted Training Modules, Member s must be certified through an ITCP as a University Instructor (UI). Anyone presently certified as a UTREP, UTLTP or UTMEP can still present any Seminar, within their certification, that has not been converted to the new Training Module format. Rider Educators Rider Course Instructors that were certified as a result of attending a Rider Course Instructor Certification Program (RCICP) which included a one day Certified Instructor Development Module (CIDM), were awarded a certification as a University Trainer for the Rider Education Program (UTREP) along with a certification as a Riding Course Instructor for the specific Course that was presented (ARC or TRC). Any Rider Course Instructor that has the UTREP Certification will still be able to present the current Rider Education Seminars until they have been re-formatted for the new system. Once re-formatted, the new Training Module will require a certification as a University Instructor (UI) in order to present them. There will be some Rider Education Seminars that will not be re-formatted and can still be presented by Certified UTREP s. The Riding Courses (ARC, TRC, SRC, and Trailering courses) will not change and the current Certified Instructors will continue to teach their approved Riding Courses. You will not need to go through any additional training. Current Riding Course Instructors will be able to teach both the classroom and range portions of the Course. Happy new year to everyone. Each January we look forward to new experiences and new or different acquaintances. With GWRRA, we sure can count on both. Let me introduce myself. I have been a member of GWRRA since 2001, shortly after becoming the owner of a 1978 GL1000. Shortly after joining and attending several dinner gatherings (I think they called them meetings back then) the chapter disbanded and I transferred to the Pocatello chapter. When someone contacted me about seven years ago to see if I would be interested in re-activating the Twin Falls chapter I agreed to be a part of this. ID-G has been active and alive ever since. I have been honored to be asked to be treasurer for the chapter which I did for two plus years. I've now been ACD for two or three years. Bill Lea asked me last May if I would be interested in being on the District team. I told him that I might be interested in the MEC position because maybe I could learn some new things for myself, our Chapter, and even for the District. Besides, many of us have met at gatherings, conventions in Salmon, Kamiah, and Garden City as well as Wing Ding in Billings. Do we have a wonderful association or what? Thanks to Laurie for her help and to Bill for his encouragement. I look forward to seeing each of you at the many gatherings we have during the year. May this year bring everything that you cherish closer and be better than ever. Looking forward to FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE this year. Note: the above images are not of my bike, but you never get over your first love! Dick Goetsch. 208-539-7099 Rgoetsch35@hotmail.com

I m hoping everyone has had a safe and Happy New Year. Hopefully you haven t all broken your resolutions yet! This is my final contribution to the District newsletter as editor. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience working with this great team and getting to know so many additional members outside of my own chapter. I ve experienced growth and many successes as well as challenges and I ve enjoyed them all. I d like to introduce your new District Newsletter Editor; Raejean Widmer, who will be taking over beginning in February. I ve known Raejean many years and you will find her to be a friendly, thoughtful and caring member of the new Idaho District Team. I m excited to see what she will do with the newsletter. We are now fast approaching the deadline for submittals to participate in the Newsletter of the Year competition. I do have some entries, but for those of you wishing to be considered, the absolute final deadline for your submittal is January 15, 2017 and anything that comes in after that date won t be considered. Send your submissions to me at mart@mysportgear.mobi Obscure, interesting or unimportant January Dates to Remember 13 - The first Friday the 13th of 2017 15/16 - Martin Luther King Jr s Birthday 17 - Ditch New Years Resolutions Day (my personal favorite!) 28 - Chinese New Year - Rooster, a Yin Year Congratulations to Idaho Chapter T for being the early birds and submitting their newsletter issue 1st for the NOTY competition! They turned in their entry on November 17th! I promised a surprise and they will receive $50 from the District to sweeten the 50/50 pot at their next chapter meeting. You see? The early bird DOES catch the worm! We will have the winning results to report for the district next month. Several chapters are participating and it s going to be a challenge to select the best! Good luck to all! - Martie 208-290-4193 mart@mysportgear.mobi

Hi GWRRA, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself (Raejean Widmer) and my husband Jerry Widmer to all of our as yet unmet friends in the GWRRA. I started motorcycling back in 1973 with a 50 cc Yamaha street and trail. It was set up for trail so I left it that way. You had to change the sprocket to make it street worthy. Then I purchased a 100 cc Kawasaki for more power and fun. I did ride that to the grocery store a few times and lots of trail riding at 5-mile recreational area, Spokane Washington. After meeting the Id-H chapter at the western regional meeting at the Kootenai County fairgrounds somewhere around 1966 we both got interested, one more time, in motorcycles. At that point we joined Chapter ID-H and then purchased our first Gold Wing; as 1985 1200 cc model. We later sold that to purchase a fellow member s blue, 1990 1500. I purchased a 650 Yamaha for my first motorcycle road experience. This was only after Jerry and I took the Idaho STAR s safety class. Later, and still smitten I purchased a 1995 Gold Wing converted with a California Side care trike kit from another ID-H member. It was A LOT of FUN! Currently, we only own the 1500 cc 1990 two-wheel motor cycle. We sold the Yamaha and the trike. Jerry started with motorcycles in 1966 with a 250 Yamaha and then a 350 Yamaha. He also owned a Zundapp before moving into our first Gold Wing. Some of our other hobbies include Hudson made old cars. Jerry has the 1949 Hudson his father bought off the show room in Spokane Washington. We are trying to restore it to original but it is not finished yet. I have an AMC built 1956 Hudson with a continental kit on it. We belong to the Hudson Car Club and see them when time allows. I like to sew and craft things and also want to learn about wood working. My retirement plans for the future are to build myself a dresser that matches the rest of the bedroom furniture. Jerry has been retired since 2012 and is enjoying himself way too much. I still have little less than 3 more years before my official retirement begins. Jerry always states Every day is a Saturday I have one daughter from a previous marriage and she was born in 1972. Jerry has two children with his first wife, his son was born in 1967 and his daughter was born in 1969. I hope this gives you all a little insight about us. I m excited to be taking over the Idaho District newsletter so please send me any information or ideas you d like to see for you and others to read. Happy and safe motorcycling, RaeJean Widmer gold-winger@hotmail.com 208-660-8520 - mobile
