APRIL 2019 Well spring seems to be winning the battle now. The winter may have felt a bit longer than most, or at least I thought until my mom texted me some pics last week. At Christmas, they had no snow; but on March 10, my parents sent these pictures from the front of our house. I guess Central Illinois winter isn t so bad after all! The golf shop is stocked, the carts have been out, and Wil s crew has been hard at it. The club has been buzzing with activity the last few weeks, and we re so excited to be back open on seasonal hours. Here are a few notes: King of Clubs begins again on Thursday, April 4 Our new format should make for an exciting game New menus have launched. Thanks to Chef Ron & staff for all their hard work. We hope you love the selections & new presentation! MGCC Bucks are now available on Wednesday nights (as well as Friday). Remember, members who dine in house for dinner service both Wednesdays & Fridays will receive 20% of their food purchase back in MGCC Bucks. This credit, will be displayed both on your monthly membership statement and to your server on the POS system. Credits earned through Wednesday and Friday evening dining may be redeemed on any day, any time, at any CLUBHOUSE venue including canopy dining. Friday Night / Family Nights will begin in late May, and MGCC BUCKS may be accumulated (or used) during this time. Credit accumulated through this program cannot be used for food & beverage purchases at the golf shop. Our monthly brunches have been very well attended, with our next brunch scheduled for Easter Sunday. Please make your reservations now! I have included our Easter Brunch menu as an insert to this newsletter. Beginning in April, the club will offer an expanded lunch service (to include breakfast items AND an omelet station), each non-brunch Sunday. Enjoy views of the pool via seating on the West Porch or fantastic new deck. ATTENTION GOLFERS! Please remember that our Saturday Game has begun. Come when you can and don t be shy. Everyone is encouraged to play. All weekly formats are individual play and those wishing to participate can let the golf shop know by Friday evening. Pre-set foursomes are welcome and will play together. Twosomes, threesomes or individuals will fill out incomplete groups. There will also be at least one player from the golf shop staff each week so again, individuals, especially our new members should feel welcome to participate! Formats will be announced each Saturday morning. Entry fees will be $15 each week. The entire pot will be paid to the field both in cash and golf shop credit. And don t forget, our Tuesday Men s League begins on April 9. Whether its incredible dining, fantastic golf or our spectacular pool, it is going to be a phenomenal year at MGCC. The staff cannot wait to see you soon and sincerely appreciates members participating in everything the club offers. Insight from Wil White Golf Course Superintendent Golfing weather has finally shown up! For the last week we have focused on debris cleanup throughout the property. Last fall we seemed to have a late leaf drop heading into winter. With this occurring many leaves are still around and will be continuously mulched up. The debris cleanup will be ongoing for the next couple of weeks as we dry out. All fine turf s playing surfaces first mowing has begun. As the turf begins its growing period the maintenance department will lower the height of cut to improve playability. With the golf course starting to green up this is a busy time for the maintenance department. With rain scheduled at the end of March, the timetable of spring aerification should begin the first week of April followed by a heavy topdress. Also scheduled for the start of April is starting back up the irrigation system. This process is key for chemical applications needed to be watered in. These applications to be applied have a small window to incorporate the release of the chemical. With soil temperatures rising more preemergent and poa suppression applications will be applied. Some of these chemical applications and late spring frost will tint the playing surface a light yellow color. In a short period of time the turf will bounce back to its original color. As a reminder please repair all ball marks on greens. With the ultimate goal of the maintenance department, improving golf course playability, we ask to keep carts on paths near greens and tees. Welcome Ryan Loeffler Assistant Golf Professional My name is Ryan Loeffler and I will be the new assistant golf pro here at MGCC! I am from a small town in Northern Michigan called Tawas City. Growing up, there was a course right by my house where I fell in love with the game. In high school, I helped take my team to the state finals where we finished top ten in the state. After high school, I attended Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I received a bachelor s degree in Natural Resources Management. Shortly after college, I decided I wanted to focus on a career in golf. Last summer I worked at Red Hawk Golf Club in my hometown and was also the assistant golf coach at Tawas Area High School. Over the winter I decided it was time to pursue an assistant pro job which led me here to Mattoon! This summer I will be working the most with the women s leagues and the junior program as well as in the pro shop and the bar on occasion. So far, I am very much enjoying my time in Mattoon and look forward to meeting you all!
