Greetings and Welcome to our 11th James Creek Simmental Private Treaty Bull Sale! This past spring and fall had many challenges for most in the agricultural world. For those that live in the north, we experienced a winter that would not end and a spring that would not get here. Prolonged cold and wet and mud plagued us until June. October was really wet and cool, and delayed weaning was a result. Through the adversity of 2013, the bulls have risen above our expectations and we are excited to offer these bulls for your consideration. This is the first time that we have been able to offer the whole sale catalog, as Full Fleckvieh bulls. The bulls and heifers were given Bovi-Shield 5 and 7-way with haemophilus in May before going to pasture. The same vaccinations were given in October before weaning. Bovi-Shield 5 was boostered after weaning, in October. We poured the bulls with generic Ivomec at weaning. The bulls and heifers were weaned on October 18, 2013. They are on a TMR that consists of whole corn, modified distillers, alfalfa, grass hay, and a mineral supplement. This ration is balanced to a 14% protein level and an energy level of.54 net energy gain. These rations have worked really well for us the past few years and the bulls have gone on feed very easy. We have included some information that we are tracking for our own use. Using the cow s weight at weaning time we can determine the calf s performance against the cow s weight for birth weight and weaning weight. These are expressed as a percentage of the cow s weight and are located on the individual bull page. The weights used are the actual weights taken on October 2, preg checking and vaccination time. Our herd average the last several years is 6-7% for birth weight and 43% for weaning weight. December 18, 2013, weights, frame score and scrotal measurements were taken. The frame score and scrotal measurements are listed as an adjusted number to one-year of age. Check our website for performance updates of the bulls. We will have another set of weights around January 31, 2014. All of the bulls are dilution tested and the results will be available later in January. Come early and have lunch with us starting at noon! Hanna will have her special Simmental cow cookies. We hope to see you. Heathe, Holly, Hanna and Hailey Widicker 2

James Creek Simmentals FEEDLOT E & CARCASS C A S PERFORMANCE R E We began finishing our calves 16 years ago. We made this management decision after seeing groups of calves in sale barns being sorted for no apparent reason, and sold at a discount. We knew that if we wanted to seriously improve our cattle, finishing them to slaughter was the way to do it. We have found that you don t need large numbers of cattle to make this decision work for you. Most of the years since we started feeding out the calves, we have used Kansas Feed Yard, at Scott City Kansas. Last summer was not the best of environments to finish cattle in Kansas. Many days were in the 100 s and most of May through July it was in the 90 s daily. The feedlot manager commented that this pen of calves never quit eating and were always waiting for the feed truck in the mornings. One note on this past year s feedlot performance. All the data from the plants, of the areas feedlots, showed a decline in performance and percent choice from the previous year. As you may recall, the feed produced in the summer of 2012, was a very dry and stressful growing season. Did the feeds have less punch then a typical year? Not sure, but our cattle were not the only cattle affected is the point. The last 9 years we have been receiving all the carcass data from the meat plants. This year we did the same. The carcass data was returned to the feedlot. We are proud to show these results to you. Pay close attention to the feed conversion line. Typically the feed conversion number is near 7 pounds consumed to 1 pound of gain. Efficient cattle will always make money. Consider the heat that these cattle lived in during the summer, we feel this is an outstanding accomplishment. Here is the data from last year s calves, 2012 born calves. All sired by Full Fleckvieh bulls!! Average Daily Gain 3.11 pounds Live Weight 1361 pounds Choice 55% Yield Grade 1 & 2 93% Average Rib Eye 15.67 sq in Dressing yield 63% Dry Matter Feed Conversion 5.61 pounds If you feed your calves or finish your cattle, we know that you can use our Fleckvieh genetics to continue to improve the beef supply in the U.S. Efficiency in the feedlot with retained ownership pays you back. When you sell your calves consider the genetic potential you have. Keep it for yourself or let someone else capitalize on your hard work.
