Meaning faithful, this one concept is integrated into every aspect of our Program. First, we seek to faithfully train our bodies and develop our athletic talents to their greatest potential. Created in God s image, we desire to reflect His glory by displaying to their fullest extent the passions and abilities He has endowed to us. Second, our focus extends beyond the improvement of individual skills to the cultivation of faithful teammates. Our women are faithful to a common task competition with other athletes in a Christian college setting and they share with one another the challenges and successes of this venture. Our women are also faithful in their commitment to each other, establishing lifelong relationships that take root on the basketball court and continue to flourish beyond the arena. Finally, our coaches and players strive to be faithful to the overall objectives of our Program, which go beyond success on the basketball court and extends to success in life. We believe that basketball serves as a training ground for the realities encountered throughout life. This game offers a valuable education that exposes and develops character and equips us with the foundation necessary for faithful Christian living. We love that our participation in basketball can bring honor to God and allow us to know Him more fully. Grove City Women s Basketball fosters faithful devotion to our sport, to our individual athletic growth, to our teammates, and to our God. Furthermore, our women benefit from an excellent academic education in a small college setting within a Christian framework. As our Community endeavors to develop women of outstanding athletic ability and exceptional character, we trust that our most faithful God will respond to our efforts in ways more wonderful than we could ever ask or imagine. What fun it is to grow and develop within the contagious environment of college basketball! CREDITS The 2008-2009 basketball guide was produced by the Grove City College Sports Information Office. GROVE CITY COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW Season Previe view The Grove City College women s basketball team returns four starters from a 2007-08 season in which the Wolverines showed great strides from the previous campaign. Grove City capped the season by advancing to the Presidents Athletic Conference Championship Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2004. Now, the Wolverines will look to continue their upward push in the PAC this winter. The 2008-09 roster features just one senior in 5- foot-4 point guard Raeann Szelong, who will enter her third year as a starter. Szelong led the team in steals in 2007-08 and fired in 21 three-point goals, which ranked third on the squad. While Szelong is the lone true guard among the returnees, several other versatile veterans can be used in a number of roles. Junior Krista Beechy is a two-year starter who finished second on the squad in scoring and field goal percentage. The 5-9 Beechy also led Grove City in minutes played last season. Like Beechy, junior Laura Miller is a two-year letterwinner up front. Miller, a 5-7 forward, started 26 games in 2007-08 and will likely start again this winter. She averaged six points and four rebounds per game. Junior Krista Beechy led Grove City in minutes played during the 2007-08 season. Sophomore Christine Slater led Grove City in scoring, rebounding and three-point goals in her rookie season. Sophomore Christine Slater emerged as Grove City s top scoring threat over the second half of her rookie season. Last year, Slater became the first freshman to lead Grove City in scoring since 1995. Slater led Grove City in scoring (11.9), rebounding (7.2), field goal percentage (47.9) and three-pointers made (30) in 2007-08. She earned Second Team All- Presidents Athletic Conference last year and will be counted on for offensive production again this year. Fellow sophomore Jenna Johnston is also back after finishing her freshman season in strong fashion. She rebounded from an early injury to play in 11 games last year. Two newcomers are also expected to make immediate contributions this year -- 5-8 forward Jayme Caldwell and 5-4 guard Megan Gebrosky. Grove City will open the 2008-09 season Tuesday, November 18 against visiting Daemen College in the Grove City College Arena. 6

GROVE CITY COLLEGE THE PRESIDENTS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE About the he PAC PRESIDENTS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Founded in 1955, the Presidents Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham University, Geneva College and Saint Vincent College all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Geneva and Saint Vincent are playing full conference schedules during their time as provisional members of NCAA Division III. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-pac accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men s and women s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in conference competition. Washington & Jefferson won the Men s All-Sports Trophy in 2007-08 while Westminster won the Women s All-Sports Trophy. In 2007-08, the league named 660 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. 2007-2008 PAC Champions Baseball Grove City Men s Basketball Bethany Women s Basketball Thomas More Men s Cross Country Grove City Women s Cross Country Grove City Football Wash. & Jeff. GROVE CITY COLLEGE Prog ogram Histor ory The date was February 2, 1977. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow for the sixth time in seven years, leaving the nation with six more weeks of winter. But what the famous rodent did not forsee is the successful run that would begin later that night for the Grove City College women s basketball team. That night, the Grove City College women s basketball team made its intercollegiate debut with a 61-50 win at Penn State Behrend. Since that historic night in 1977, Grove City has earned over 350 victories, numerous postseason berths and six conference championships. PROGRAM HISTORY The 1977 team finished 7-4 under head coach Terry Ellis, including a 6-2 record in the Women s Keystone Conference. Grove City s season ended with a 60-55 loss to Allegheny in the WKC playoffs, however. That started a run of seven consecutive winning seasons for the Wolverine program. Grove City s 1978 squad again reached the WKC playoffs by going 5-2 in the league, 7-5 overall. The following season, Grove City captured its first conference title by storming to a 7-0 league record during the 1978-79 season. The Wolverines finished 13-1 overall, including a 12-0 mark against NCAA opponents. The Wolverines rolled to another WKC championship with a 7-0 league record in the 1979-80 season, finishing 16-1 overall, which is still the best season in program history. On her way to becoming Grove City s all-time leading scorer, then-freshman Jody Imbrie led the Wolverines by averaging 22.6 points per game as a rookie. Grove City stormed to its third straight league title in the 1980-81 season, going 6-1 in the league and 19-3 overall. The following season, the Wolverines would earn their first-ever NCAA Tournament. The 1981-82 NCAA Team The 1982-83 NCAA Team In 1981-82, Grove City claimed its fourth straight WKC title and qualified for the first-ever NCAA Division III Women s Basketball Championship Tournament with a 19-5 record. Grove City fell to Augustana (Ill.) in the first round, 83-62. Senior Karen Watkins closed her career as Grove City s alltime leading rebounder with 862 boards while Imbrie became the program s first 1,000-point scorer. Grove City returned to the NCAA Tournament the following season after winning its fifth straight WKC title with a 10-2 league mark. The Wolverines downed Susquehanna in the first round, 60-58, but were eliminated in the second round by defending national champion Elizabethtown, 59-55. Grove City finished the season with a school-record 22 wins. Imbrie registered a school-record 770 points in 27 games, finishing her career as Grove City s all-time leading scorer with 2,288 points. She also set the single-game scoring record that season with 41 points against Youngstown State Jan. 29, 1983. Ellis stepped down as head coach following the 1982-83 season, finishing with a 102-26 (.792) record. Judy Zarenko coached Grove City to a 22-23 aggregate record during the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons. Grove City finished second in the WKC in 1984-85 with a 4-1 record. Susan Roberts, currently associate athletic director at Grove City, assumed control of the program prior to the 1985-86 season. A new challenge awaited Grove City that year: the Presidents Athletic Conference. Grove City College joined the PAC prior to the 1984-85 season but 1985-86 was the first season the league sponsored a women s basketball championship. Grove City went 7-5 in its first season of PAC play, 11-11 overall. 20

WOMEN S BASKETBALL 2008-2009 Prog ogram Histor ory Senior Karin Hendrickson helped lead Grove City to another runner-up finish in the Presidents Athletic Conference during the 1998-99 season. She became Grove City s seventh 1,000-point scorer and also graduated as the College s all-time leader in steals with 247. The 1986-87 PAC Championship Team The next season, Grove City secured its first PAC championship with a 12-0 league mark. Senior Brenda Kanar (1,183) became the program s second 1,000-point scorer during the season, helping the Wolverines post a 17-3 overall record. As the 1980s closed and the 1990s began, Grove City collected four consecutive runner-up finishes in the PAC. Carolyn Cochrane (1,153) joined Imbrie and Kanar in the 1,000-point club during the 1988-89 season while Christine Carlson (1987-91) finished her career with 1,337 points. Cochrane also graduated with1,110 rebounds, the most in College history. As a senior, Carlson became just the second Grove City player to eclipse the 500-point mark in one season during the 1990-91 campaign. In Roberts final year as head coach, Theresa Berg moved ahead of Carlson into second place on Grove City s alltime scoring list with 1,347 points. Roberts finished with a 101-78 record as head coach, second all-time to Ellis in both victories and winning percentage. Melissa Lamie inherited a very young Grove City team prior to the 1993-94 season. Over the next two seasons, Grove City won just four of 46 games. But the foundation for future success had been established. Grove City rebounded to a 12-12 season in 1995-96. The following year, Grove City went 15-9 during the regular season and earned its first-ever ECAC Tournament bid. Led by tournament MVP Beth Lora, the Wolverines captured the 1997 ECAC title with a 67-63 overtime win over Ursinus in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Lora s 33-point effort in the semifinals lifted Grove City to a 71-68 win over top-seeded King s. In 1997-98, Lora went over the 1,000-point mark and finished as Grove City s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,250 points. Grove City finished 16-9, reaching the ECAC semifinals before being eliminated by Pitt-Bradford. Grove City returned to the ECAC tournament in 2000 as the fifth seed in the six-team tournament. Grove City knocked off Alvernia in the quarterfinals, then upset topseeded Lebanon Valley in the semifinals. Grove City fell to Carnegie Mellon, 66-54, in the championship game. That year, Grove City set a new school record by playing 29 games and by winning three total postseason games. The Wolverines celebrated their silver anniversary season by earning their fourth ECAC berth in five years in 2001. Grove City lost to host DeSales in the quarterfinals, however, 72-49. Grove City earned another second-place finish in the PAC in the 2001-2002 season as guard Stephanie Murphy became the first Grove City player to play in 100 or more games. In addition, Lamie became Grove City s all-time wins leader when Grove City pulled out a last-second 53-52 win at Washington and Jefferson Jan. 23, 2002. In 2002-2003, guard Cara Denniston established a new Grove City record by playing in 106 straight games. Denniston helped Grove City rebound from a 1-9 start to earn runner-up honors behind NCAA qualifier Washington and Jefferson. Following a 14-11 season in 2003-2004, Grove City returned to the postseason in 2004-2005 with a 16-8 regular season record. Grove City went 8-2 in the PAC and shared the conference s regular season title. Grove City then advanced to the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament before falling in the quarterfinals to eventual ECAC champ DeSales, 71-63. Senior guard Abby Moose closed her career with 1,209 career points, the fifth-highest total in school history. Lamie stepped down to concentrate on her duties as Grove City s head women s soccer coach after the 2005-06 season. A new era of Grove City College women s basketball began in 2006 as Sarah Harris became the program s fifth all-time head coach. During the season, center Rachel McCoy became Grove City s ninth all-time 1,000-point scorer, finishing her career with 1,036 points. PROGRAM HISTORY 21

GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT THE COLLEGE The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 27 neo-gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The big business school curriculum prepares students for today s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a notebook computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. Grove City College s Breen Student Union This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum. The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men s and women s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport. WOMEN S BASKETBALL 2008-2009 ATHLETIC FACILITIES All 19 of Grove City College s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College s football and track and field teams. During the summer of 2006, the College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. Lights were also added at Robert E. Thorn Field while the 8-lane track around the field was resurfaced. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex will now be used by both the College s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. Several upgrades to the facility were recently made. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College s basketball and volleyball programs. The 1,800-seat Arena recently received new scoreboards, new scorer s tables and new shotclocks. The Grove City College Pool is one of the nation s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo. Grove City College installed CSTurf, lights and new track and field competition areas at Robert E. Thorn Field in summer 2006. In addition, the PLC features the Grove City College Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-theart facility. In 2008, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships at the College Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic, Cybex and free weight equipment is an integral part of the PLC. Expansion of the fitness room is a keystone of the Center s ongoing renovations. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. New synthetic floors were installed in the intramural rooms in summer 2006. The building houses an athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. In 2004, the College constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration. Grove City s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City s baseball and softball facilities received major facelifts in 2007-08 as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
