NOLES, 11 VISIT MIAMI FOR FINAL TIME Florida State (18-10) and Miami (18-11) will face off for the final time in head coach Mike Martin s 40-year career Friday-Sunday. Martin s first game as FSU coach was against the Hurricanes on February 22, 1980, and he has faced the Canes 205 times since then. Florida State has not lost the season series to Miami (including the ACC Tournament) since 2008 and won 2-of-3 against Miami in Tallahassee last year. NOLES WIN SERIES AT ND Florida State won two of three games at Notre Dame, including a 3-1, 10-inning rubber match (3/24). Shane Drohan, Conor Grady and J.C. Flowers combined to allow just one hit in the game. The one run allowed was the fewest in extra innings for FSU since a 2-1 win at Georgia Tech in 2012. Drohan set a (then) career high with 5.1 innings pitched; Grady set a career high with 3.2 innings pitched and five strikeouts. Flowers earned his fifth save of the season. Drew Mendoza and Elijah Cabell hit home runs in FSU s -1 win in the opener (3/23) against the Irish. Mendoza leads FSU with 8 home runs on the season. FSU TOPS FIU ON LATE HR Drew Mendoza s seventh home run of the season, tying his 2018 total, broke a 6-6 tie in the 8th inning and led FSU to a 9-6 win over FIU. Mendoza leads FSU with eight home runs and 31 walks. He ranks sixth nationally in walks per game (1.14). J.C. Flowers hit a home run and earned the save against the Panthers. Flowers has done that in the same game three times already in 2019. FOUR NOLES WITH 5+ HR Junior Drew Mendoza leads FSU with eight home runs, already more than his seven in 2018. Freshman Elijah Cabell has six, including one to centerfield at Notre Dame last weekend. Sophomore Cooper Swanson and junior J.C. Flowers have five each. Both players had just two in their careers entering the season. As a team, FSU s 3 home runs rank 9th nationally and are second in the ACC. The last Seminole to hit for the cycle was Tyler Holt, now FSU s first base coach, in 2010. Salvatore set a career high with four hits and tied career highs in runs (3) and RBI (4). Flowers, who has started 12 games in centerfield at FSU, made his first pitching appearances of his career this season. Flowers has nine appearances on the mound and has not allowed a run in 11.2 innings. He earned his first career start against Jacksonville, allowing a hit and striking out three in 3.0 innings. He has five saves on the year to go along with a career-high five home runs (he had two combined in his first two seasons). According to Nolefan.org, a Seminole had notched a save and a home run in the same game just twice before this season - Buster Posey vs. Auburn, March 1, 2008 & Mike McGee vs. Florida in the 2010 College World Series. Nationally, Georgia s Aaron Schunk, second nationally with 10 saves, has done it twice this season. In addition to five home runs, Flowers added his third career walk-off with a three-run double in the 10th inning to beat Virginia Tech, 9-8. NOLES NO-HIT MAINE IN SEASON OPENER Three Florida State pitchers combined to throw Florida State s 10th no-hitter in program history against Maine (2/15). Drew Parrish went 5.0 innings and allowed one walk and struck out 5; Conor Grady threw a career-high 3.0 innings and struck out 4; and junior Chase Haney, making his first appearance since 201 after Tommy John surgery, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. It is the second known no-hitter on Opening Day - Davidson s Wes Self tossed one in 2001. FSU is one of five schools to throw a no-hitter this season, joining Duke, Ole Miss, Seton Hall and East Carolina (perfect game). FSU added a one-hitter in 10 innings at Notre Dame (3/24). The Noles and Blue Devils are the only teams in the country with a no-hitter and a one-hitter in 2019. 2019 FSU Baseball Media Policies Coach Martin and players will be available postgame for a press conference in the Tradition Room. Media should enter through the concourse under the first base grandstands at the conclusion of the game. Reach out to Steven McCartney for any needs outside of gameday. The Fort Myers native hit a pinch-hit HR against the Bears Friday, broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run homer on Saturday and extended FSU s lead with a HR Sunday. Swanson hit first-inning home runs in both of FSU s wins against Virginia Tech. MARTIN LEADS FSU PAST YOUNGSTOWN STATE Freshman Robby Martin was 8-for-12 with 8 RBI, 3 doubles and a home run in FSU s three-game sweep against Youngstown State (2/22-23). Martin hit his first collegiate home run against the Penguins (2/23). He was a combined -for-8 with 8 RBI in the doubleheader. Martin was named the ACC Player of the Week (2/25) for his efforts. He is the first FSU freshman since DJ Stewart in 2013 to earn Player of the Week honors. FSU s 24 runs against Youngstown State (24-2 win, 2/23) were the most for FSU since also scoring 24 against USF in 2015. After an 11-game stretch without an RBI, Martin had three at Notre Dame (3/23) and added three more doubles. He leads FSU with 12 on the year. FRESHMEN STAND OUT FOR NOLES Robby Martin leads FSU with a.340 batting average, while fellow freshmen Nander De Sedas and Elijah Cabell have combined for nine home runs. Cabell leads FSU with a.468 on-base percentage. Those three freshmen all homered in FSU s 24-2 rout of Youngstown State (2/23). FSU s fourth freshman starter, Mat Nelson, hit his first collegiate home run in the second game of the Youngstown State doubleheader. Nelson also has five of FSU s sacrifice bunts on the year. Martin had 6 RBI against Youngstown State, all in the first three innings. It was FSU s first 6-RBI game since Drew Mendoza did it in 201 and the most in the ACC this season. Martin s 5 RBI against Maine (2/15) were the most for a Seminole freshman in a season opener. His five RBI were the most on Opening Day for any Nole since junior Gage West had five in 2016. GAME NOTES SALVATORE RED HOT TO START YEAR Senior second baseman Mike Salvatore hit.412 with three doubles and his second career home run against Maine (2/15-1). On the year, Salvatore is hitting.310 and has already surpassed his 2018 totals for triples (2-1) and home runs (4-1). He has 28 RBI in 28 games. In 2018, he had 2 RBI in 62 games. Salvatore started all 62 games as FSU s shortstop in 2018 before moving to second base this season. Salvatore joined Reese Albert and Nander De Sedas with four RBI against Maine (2/16), the first time in nearly 10 years that FSU had three hitters record 4+ RBI in the same game. FOSTER WALK-OFF LEADS FSU TO SERIES WIN Catcher Jonathan Foster is one of just four seniors on the 2019 team. In limited action last season behind All-American catcher Cal Raleigh, who was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, Foster hit.214 with two home runs. None of Foster s hits were bigger than his pinchhit, two-run walk-off home run against Louisville on March 30. Foster s home run was FSU s first walk-off HR when TRAILING a game since Mike McGee s two-run HR gave FSU a -6 win over Miami in 2010 (had five walk-off home runs in tie games in that span). Both of Foster s home runs in 2018 came as a pinch hitter - his first was in his first career AB as a Seminole, a three-run HR against Troy (2/23). Foster hit his first home run of 2019 against Virginia Tech (3/8). PLATE DISCIPLINE & EFFICIENCY For the seventh time in the past nine seasons, Florida State again led the country in walks drawn by a sizeable margin in 2018. The Seminoles have drawn 193 walks in 238.2 innings played in 2019. FSU drew 14 walks in game two against Maine, its most in a game since also drawing 14 against Villanova in 2016.
