2010 NCAA WOMEN S FINAL FOUR National Championship Game Alamodome San Antonio, Texas GENERAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES 2010 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES April 6, 2010 San Antonio, Texas GAME NOTES Connecticut earned its seventh national championship in as many title game appearances (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010), second only to Tennessee s eight NCAA titles. Four of Connecticut s seven title game wins were decided by single digits (1995-70-64 vs. Tennessee in Minneapolis; 2003 73-68 vs. Tennessee in Atlanta; 2004 70-61 vs. Tennessee in New Orleans; 2010 53-47 vs. Stanford in San Antonio). UConn (39-0) recorded the sixth undefeated season in NCAA Division I women s basketball history, with the Huskies owning four of those perfect campaigns. Other undefeated teams include: 1986 Texas (34-0), 1995 UConn (35-0), 1998 Tennessee (39-0), 2002 UConn (39-0), 2009 UConn (39-0). Connecticut is the first NCAA Division I women s basketball team ever to post back-to-back undefeated seasons, and first Division I team of either gender to do so since John Wooden s UCLA teams of 1972 and 1973. All four of UConn s perfect seasons (1995, 2002, 2009, 2010) have culminated with winning the Women s Final Four in the Central Time Zone 1995 in Minneapolis, 2002 in San Antonio, 2009 in St. Louis and 2010 in San Antonio. Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma is 14-4 (.778) all-time in 11 career trips to the Women s Final Four (7-4 in semifinals, 7-0 in championship games). He is one of only three coaches with a winning Women s Final Four record among those with six-or-more games coached, joining USC s Linda Sharp (5-1) and Tennessee s Pat Summitt (21-10). Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma improves to 77-15 (.837) in NCAA tournament play, with his 77 tourney wins tying him with Duke men s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (whose Blue Devils won their fourth title on Monday night) for second all-time behind Tennessee women s basketball coach Pat Summitt (106). Tuesday s national championship game was the closest since April 4, 2006, when Maryland defeated Duke in overtime, 78-75 in Boston. It also was the 10th NCAA final to be decided by six points or fewer. In the three games at this year s Women s Final Four, the participants combined to shoot 23-for-98 (.235) from the threepoint line. In the past decade (2001-10), teams that have led at halftime of their Women s Final Four games are 21-9. Connecticut is just the second team in the past decade to rally from a halftime deficit to win the national championship, and the first since 2006, when Maryland trailed Duke, 38-28 at halftime before coming back to win, 78-75 in overtime (April 4, 2006, in Boston). The other halftime rally in this decade came on April 1, 2001, when Notre Dame trailed Purdue, 32-26, in St. Louis, before coming back to claim the national championship, 68-66. In the 29-year history of the NCAA Women s Final Four, teams scoring 60 points or fewer in the national championship game are 5-11, with this marking just the third NCAA final to see neither team score at least 60 points. In 1988, Louisiana Tech defeated Auburn, 56-54, in Tacoma, Wash., and in 2007, Tennessee defeated Rutgers, 59-46, in Cleveland. Tuesday s championship game attendance was 22,936, the sixth-largest single-session crowd in NCAA Women s Final Four history. The larger crowds are: 29,619 (2002 in San Antonio), 28,937 (2005 in Indianapolis), 28,210 (2003 in Atlanta), 25,817 (2010 national semifinals in San Antonio) and 23,291 (1996 in Charlotte). Maya Moore (Connecticut) was named the Women s Final Four Most Outstanding Player, while Tina Charles (Connecticut), Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford), Kayla Pedersen (Stanford) and Danielle Robinson (Oklahoma) were named to the Women s Final Four All-Tournament Team. It was the second Women s Final Four All-Tournament Team award for Moore and Charles (who was the 2009 Most Outstanding Player), while the others were first-time selections. GENERAL NOTES Tuesday s national championship game between Connecticut (38-0) and Stanford (36-1) marked the fewest combined losses between the two teams in a title game. The previous fewest combined losses by championship game participants was two in 1995, when Connecticut (34-0) faced Tennessee (34-2) in Minneapolis. Connecticut and Stanford met for the third consecutive year in the Women s Final Four, but for the first time in the national championship game (the two sides split national semifinal contests, with Stanford winning 82-73 at Tampa in 2008 and UConn returning the favor by an 83-64 count at St. Louis in 2009). The last time the same two teams met in three consecutive Women s Final Fours was 2002-04, when Connecticut and Tennessee squared off in the championship game (2002 in San Antonio) and semifinals (2003 in Atlanta; 2004 in New Orleans), with the Huskies winning all three matchups. This year s NCAA Women s Final Four was viewed in 82 countries around the world via the ESPN family of networks and ESPN3.com. The final Nielsen ratings are in for Sunday s national semifinal telecasts on ESPN the opener between Stanford and Oklahoma garnered a 1.7 rating, while the nightcap between Baylor and Connecticut earned a 2.8 rating (up 37 percent from last year s second semifinal between Connecticut and Stanford, and registering the same rating as ESPN2 s NBA broadcast of the Cleveland Cavaliers/Boston Celtics game). Sunday s two national semifinals combined for a 2.2 rating, which is up 14 percent from last year s collective 1.9 semifinals rating. Baylor s Lindsay Palmer was named the Elite 88 award recipient for this year s NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Championship. Palmer, a sophomore guard, owns a 3.952 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a psychology major. Connecticut s Tina Charles was named both the Associated Press National Player of the Year and the Naismith Trophy recipient as the national player of the year, while her UConn teammate, Maya Moore, was named the State Farm Wade Trophy recipient for the second consecutive year (joining Old Dominion s Nancy Lieberman and LSU s Seimone Augustus as the only two-time recipients in the award s 33-year history). Tuesday night s National Anthem was performed by Ayla Brown, who recently completed her career with the Boston College women s basketball team and formerly was a semifinalist on American Idol. Brown also is the daughter of recently-elected Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.). Vice President Joe Biden, and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, were on hand for Tuesday night s national championship game, as well as former Secretary of State (and current Stanford professor) Condoleezza Rice. BIG EAST CONFERENCE NOTES Connecticut earns the eighth women s basketball title in BIG EAST Conference history, and the 28 th NCAA championship for the league in all sports. The Huskies have seven of those women s basketball crowns (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010), while Notre Dame won the 2001 national championship. With those eight women s basketball championships, the BIG EAST ties the Southeastern Conference for the most NCAA women s basketball titles in the 29-year history of the NCAA Division I women s basketball championship. All eight SEC crowns have been won by Tennessee. With Connecticut s 2010 national championship, seven of the past 11 NCAA Division I women s basketball champions (2000-2010) have come from the BIG EAST. TOURNAMENT RECORDS Connecticut and Stanford combined to score 100 points (UConn 53, Stanford 47), making this the lowest-scoring championship game in the 29-year history of the NCAA tournament. The previous combined low point total was 105 points on April 3, 2007, when Tennessee defeated Rutgers, 59-46, in Cleveland. Connecticut s 53 points were the fewest scored by a winning team in the national championship game, eclipsing Louisiana Tech s 56 points in a 56-54 win over Auburn on April 3, 1988, in Tacoma, Wash. Connecticut s nine-point comeback matched the fourth-largest rally in national championship game history, and largest since April 4, 2006, when Maryland erased a 13-point second-half deficit to defeat Duke in overtime, 78-75, in Boston. The teams combined for 32 first-half points, easily the lowest-scoring half of basketball in Women s Final Four history. The previous lowest-scoring half in a Women s Final Four game (38 points) came on April 1, 2007, when Rutgers outscored LSU, 22-16 in the second half of RU s 59-35 national semifinal win in Cleveland.

On March 28, 1999, Duke led Purdue (coached at the time by current ESPN television analyst Carolyn Peck), 22-17, at halftime of the NCAA title game in San Jose, before the Boilermakers rallied for a 62-45 victory. Connecticut s 12 points in the first half not only tied a school record for fewest points in a half (12 in the second half at Rutgers on Feb. 27, 2006), but it also was the lowest-scoring half by one team in Women s Final Four history. The previous low-water mark was LSU s 15 points in the first half of its 64-45 loss to Duke in the national semifinals on April 2, 2006, in Boston. Connecticut s 12 points in the first half were the fewest by any team in a national championship game, five fewer than Purdue s 17 points against Duke on March 28, 1999, at San Jose. Connecticut s 12 points in the first half were tied for the eighth-fewest points by any team in any round in the 29-year history of the NCAA tournament, and the fewest since March 23, 2010, when Temple scored 12 points in the first half in a Dayton Region second round game against Connecticut at Norfolk, Va. (UConn won 90-36). The NCAA Championship record for fewest points in one half is 10, set twice and both against Connecticut (Long Island in the second half of an East Region first round game on March 17, 2001; Southern in the second half of a Dayton Region first round game on March 21, 2010). The two teams combined for 98 rebounds (49 each), the most combined rebounds in a national championship game. The previous high for combined rebounds in an NCAA final was 94 (Tennessee 49, Virginia 45), set in Tennessee s 70-67 overtime win over Virginia on March 31, 1991, in New Orleans. Stanford s.265 field goal percentage (18-for-68) was the lowest by any team in a national championship game, surpassing the.296 mark (21-for-71) by Western Kentucky against Stanford on April 4, 1992, in Los Angeles (Stanford won that game, 78-62). Connecticut s.328 field goal percentage (19-for-58) was the lowest by a winning team in a national championship game, topping North Carolina s.344 mark (21-for-61) on April 3, 1994, in a 60-59 win over Louisiana Tech in Richmond, Va. Stanford s 18 made field goals were tied for the third-fewest by any team in the national championship game, and fewest since April 2, 2000, when Tennessee made a record-tying 16 baskets in a 71-52 loss to Connecticut in Philadelphia. Connecticut s 19 made field goals were the fewest by a winning team in the national championship game, one less than Tennessee s 20 baskets in a 59-46 win over Rutgers on April 3, 2007, in Cleveland. Connecticut s.409 free throw percentage (9-for-22) was the third-lowest in a national championship game (min. 10 attempts), and lowest since Rutgers shot 40 percent (4-for-10) from the foul line on April 3, 2007, in a 59-46 loss to Tennessee in Cleveland. Stanford s three made free throws were the fewest by any team in a national championship game, one less than the old record that was set three times before (most recently on April 3, 2007, by Rutgers in a 59-46 loss to Tennessee in Cleveland). Stanford s three made free throws also tied for the third-fewest by any team in Women s Final Four history, and fewest since Tennessee sank two foul shots on April 6, 2008, in a 47-46 national semifinal win over LSU in Tampa. Stanford s four free throw attempts were the fewest by any team in Women s Final Four history, exceeding the previous low-water mark of five set twice before, both in national semifinals (by Vanderbilt vs. Texas Tech on April 3, 1993, in Atlanta; by Stanford vs. Connecticut on April 1, 1995, in Minneapolis). Connecticut and Stanford combined for 21 turnovers, tying for the fewest combined giveaways in a national championship game (21 by Connecticut [10] and Tennessee [11] on April 6, 2004, in New Orleans). Connecticut s 10 turnovers were tied for third-fewest in an NCAA final (fewest since the Huskies 10 giveaways in 2004), while Stanford s 11 turnovers were tied for fourth in a national title game (fewest since Tennessee s 11 giveaways in 2004). Stanford committed just 18 total turnovers in its two games at this year s Women s Final Four, breaking Purdue s record of 19 giveaways at the 1999 Women s Final Four in San Jose.
