The Crusaders are one of two league wins the Leopards have this season, falling in Easton on Jan. 13 by a 65-52 score. c Wednesday s contest marks the finale of four games in eight days for the Maroon and White, as Lafayette s conditioning will be tested. The Leopards played four games in a nine-day stretch earlier this season, falling on the road at NJIT, La Salle and Princeton, before beating Penn in the finale at Kirby Sports Center on Nov. 29. c Freshman Paulius Zalys has proven his worth since entering Patriot League play, averaging 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest during the league season. Zalys recorded his second double-double of the season on Saturday in the loss to Boston U., posting 14 points and 10 rebounds. c Holy Cross holds a 35-26 edge in the all-time series. Lafayette has won seven of the last nine contests. c With three assists on Monday in the loss to Lehigh, junior Nick Lindner moved into fourth on Lafayette s all-time assists list. Lindner has tallied 384 helpers during his time on College Hill and is 24 assists away from the third spot, behind Matt Roberts 90. Probable Starters No. Name Yr. Pos. Ht. Wt. Ratio 317/275 (1.2) LAST TIME OUT In a game that featured 22 combined three s and both teams shooting comfortably over 50 percent from the field, Lehigh converted on 19 Lafayette turnovers to pull away late for the 87-72 win in the first 2015-16 edition of the rivalry at Kirby Sports Center. Shooting efficiency was definitely not the downfall of the Maroon and White (5-18, 2-10) on Monday evening as the Leopards went 28-for-52 from the floor (53.8%) and 10-for-22 from the three-point line (45.5%). Unfortunately, Lehigh (9-14, 7-5) matched that productivity, finishing at 32-of-56 from the field (57.1%) and 12-of-24 from distance (50.0%). Senior Bryce Scott shot his way out of a slump, going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc for 19 points to lead the Leopards offensively. Sophomore Matt Klinewski and junior Monty Boykins joined Scott in double-figures with 17 and 12, respectively, while junior Nick Lindner chipped in with three assists, moving him into the top-five on the Lafayette career assists list with 384 helpers. Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year Tim Kempton was a force for the Hawks, finishing with a points-rebounds double-double of 22 and 13 on an efficient 9-of-10 from the field, including a three from the top of the key. Jesse Chuku added 18 points, and Kahron Ross and Austin Price posted 16 and 15, respectively. THE SKINNY ON THE CRUSADERS Holy Cross enters Wednesday s contest at 4-8 in Patriot League play and 9-14 overall under firstyear head coach Bill Carmody. The Crusaders were projected to finish eighth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll and currently sit one game behind that spot and two games ahead of the last-place Leopards. Holy Cross has dropped four of its last five, but its lone win was an impressive one, knocking off second-place Navy in overtime on Jan. 30, 87-80. Robert Champion leads three Crusaders that average in double-figure scoring with 11.5 points per game, joined by Malachi Alexander at 10.7 per contest and freshman Karl Charles at 10.5 points per night. Holy Cross sits in the bottom half of the table in most of the league s statistical categories, but has done a good job taking care of the ball, leading the conference in turnover margin (+0.9) and sitting second in assist/turnover ratio (1.2). Last Meeting Lafayette 65, Holy Cross 52 January 13, 2016 Easton, Pa. LAST MEETING Senior Zach Rufer tallied a career-high 16 points and the Lafayette defense held Holy Cross to 52 points, the lowest output since a 77-50 victory over Robert Morris in the first game of the 2014-15 season, as the Leopards picked up their second Patriot League win by a 65-52 margin on Jan. 13 at Kirby Sports Center. Rufer was the catalyst for the Lafayette offense all night, going 5-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-8 from three-point range. The senior also ripped down seven rebounds to tie a career-high on the glass and add to his three-assist, two-steal stat line. The Leopards played their third straight game without senior captain Bryce Scott, who was still at the time battling a shoulder injury. The Maroon and White stood up in his place, though, as junior co-captain Nick Lindner, freshman Paulius Zalys and sophomore Matt Klinewski joined Rufer in double figures with 13, 11 and 11 points, respectively on the night. Lafayette shot 22-for-48 from the floor (45.8%) and went 10-for-25 from three (40.0%). The Leopards held Holy Cross to 18-of-56 shooting (32.1%) and the Crusaders made just five of their 27 attempts from beyond the arc (18.5%). Rebounding was relatively even with Holy Cross holding a slight 34-32 edge, while Lafayette assisted 17 times on 22 made field goals for an efficient performance. ALL-TIME SERIES Holy Cross holds a 35-26 edge in an all-time series with the Leopards that dates back to 1947. The two teams split the season series a year ago and Lafayette has come out victorious in seven of the last nine contests. RIGHT THERE One thing that s been constant throughout the current losing skid for Lafayette is the mindset that the team is a play or two away from having things fall on their side instead of their opponents. The Leopards have fought in the second half of each of the last three games, only to fall apart late, with the game going to overtime on two occasions. With the exception of Navy, the Maroon and White have been within single digits late in the

Lindner Chosen for Preseason All-Patriot League Team BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior co-captain Nick Lindner of the Lafayette men s basketball team was selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, it was announced at Patriot League Media Day in Bethlehem, Pa. on Oct. 22. Coming off the team s Patriot League championship run a year ago, the Patriot League s head coaches and sports information directors predicted Lafayette to finish sixth this season after losing its trio of 1,000-point scorers in Seth Hinrichs 15, Joey Ptasinski 15 and Dan Trist 15 to graduation. Lehigh and Bucknell were picked at the top of the table with 12 and eight first-place votes, respectively, while Boston U., Army West Point and American followed in front of the Leopards. Loyola, Holy Cross, Colgate and Navy rounded out the poll. We re the defending champions, but we ve lost a lot, head coach Fran O Hanlon said. Last year s team set the bar high and we re looking to build on that championship culture. Hopefully, we can use the past to help us with our attitude and approach to the game this season. As a sophomore, Lindner was in his best form when it mattered most during the Patriot League Tournament in March, averaging 23.5 points per game in three contests to earn Tournament MVP honors. The starting point guard for 31 games a year ago, he finished third on the team with 12.5 points per contest. An All-Patriot League Third-Team selection, he led the conference in free-throw percentage (85.0%) and assist/turnover ratio (2.6), and was second in assists with 5.2 helpers per game. The Patriot League Preseason Poll and All-League Squad are shown below. Patriot League Men s Basketball Preseason Poll 1. Lehigh, 156 points (12 first-place votes) 2. Bucknell, 150 (8) 3. Boston University, 126 4. Army West Point, 108 5. American, 84 6. Lafayette, 82 7. Loyola, 73 8. Holy Cross, 50 9. Colgate, 36 10. Navy, 35 Patriot League Men s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year Tim Kempton, Lehigh Men s Basketball Preseason All-Patriot League Team Cedric Hankerson, Boston University Chris Hass, Bucknell Tim Kempton, Lehigh Nick Lindner, Lafayette Jesse Reed, American second half at least once against the rest of the league teams. ON THE LINE! Wednesday s game at Holy Cross marks the final of four games in eight days for the Maroon and White, as Lafayette s conditioning will be tested. The Leopards played four games in a nineday stretch earlier this season, falling on the road at NJIT, La Salle and Princeton, before beating Penn in the finale at Kirby Sports Center on Nov. 29. Not helping the cause is the fact that the Leopards first two games of this stretch went to overtime. 80 NOT A GUARANTEE Lafayette has lost three games this season when scoring at least 80 points, the most since the 2013-14 campaign when the Leopards dropped four. A season ago, the Maroon and White were 10-1 when reaching the 80-point plateau. Interviews will be scheduled at times that do not conflict with the student-athletes class and practice schedules. Players will not be available on game day until after the game. Interview requests should be made through the Athletic Communications Office. ZALYS GETS HIS SHOT Freshman Paulius Zalys has proven his worth since entering Patriot League play, averaging 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest during the league season. Zalys recorded his second doubledouble of the season on Saturday in the loss to Boston U. Although he s only started two games, the rookie is getting starter minutes, averaging 23.0 per night. MOVING ON UP With three assists in Lafayette s loss to Lehigh on Monday, junior Nick Lindner moved into fourth in the Lafayette record books in career assists with 384 helpers. Lindner entered the year in a tie for 15th all-time at Lafayette with 286 assists. Additionally, senior Bryce Scott sits in 17th with his total currently at 251. SECOND HALF REVIVAL Finishing the first half of Patriot League play in a tie for ninth with a 2-6 record, the Leopards are looking to revive their season as the schedule moves through the second half. A season ago, the Leopards lost five games the first time through the league schedule, but came back to beat four out of those five teams the second time around. The only team that beat Lafayette twice last season was American, a squad the Leopards knocked off for the Patriot title in March. That revival has been tough so far, dropping all four since the second half of the rotation began at Loyola on Jan. 30. GREAT SCOTT! Senior Bryce Scott has been in and out of the top-10 in the country in three-point field-goal percentage this season, hitting three s at a 44.0-percent clip. Scott sits second in the league in that category and shot himself out of a recent slump against Lehigh, going 5-for-9 from distance after going just 1-for-14 from the field the two previous games. MANNING THE BENCH Lafayette s Fran O Hanlon has posted 294 wins in his career in his 21st season on the sideline for the Leopards, while Holy Cross Bill Carmody is in his first season (18th overall), holding a career mark of 293-249. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED With 15 points at Navy on Jan. 16, junior Nick Lindner reached 1,007 points for his career. Lindner joined senior Bryce Scott as the second player to score their 1,000th point for the Leopards this season as Scott accomplished the feat on Dec. 9 against Fairleigh Dickinson. The junior become the 43rd player in Lafayette history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. FOUR SCORE Lafayette has had its most success this season when four or more Leopards score in double-figures. The Leopards are 5-8 when four players get in on the offensive effort, but 0-10 when less than four manage to reach the 10-point mark. Lafayette has four guys that average in double-figures, with Nick Lindner leading the way at 14.7 points per game. Matt Klinewski averages 13.9 points per night, while Bryce Scott and Monty Boykins put up 12.7 and 11.1 points apiece, respectively. HALF AND HALF Lafayette is 0-14 when trailing at halftime this season and has lost its games by an average of 14.1 points per contest. A year ago, the Leopards were 4-13 when trailing at the half, but 15-0 with a halftime lead. Starts have proved extremely important this season for the Maroon and White, holding a 5-4 mark this season with a lead at the break. FAMILIAR FOES Lafayette has played 753 games against current Patriot League members, holding a 401-352 overall record. In League play, Lafayette is 152-207 in the regular season and 22-22 in the Patriot League Tournament. Under Fran O Hanlon, the Leopards are 139-150 in conference regular-season play. DOUBLES Sophomore Matt Klinewski recorded the first double-double of his young career on Dec. 9 in Kirby Sports Center, posting 15 points and securing 16 rebounds in defeat. Freshman Paulius Zalys picked up his first career double-double on Jan. 2, ripping down 11 boards to go along with 10 points vs. Loyola and added his second on Saturday with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Boston U. BOX OUT Lafayette has struggled on the glass this season, which is to be expected when losing the top two rebounders from a year ago in Dan Trist 15 and Seth Hinrichs 15. The Leopards are currently -6.7 in rebounding margin, but are used to overcoming difficulties on the glass, finishing last season ninth in the Patriot League in rebounding margin at -2.0 and still recording the team s first 20-win season since 2000. Lafayette has won or tied in the rebounding battle seven times this season against Penn (38-38), Colgate (44-28), Loyola (38-37), Army (41-34), Holy Cross (33-33), American (22-20) and Loyola (38-29). LITTLE OF EVERYTHING FROM LINDNER Junior co-captain Nick Lindner began the season on a tear with 49 points in his first two games. His ability to score when necessary always makes him a dangerous offensive threat, but being able to drop nine assists in a game, like he did at Cornell, is also an added bonus. Lindner leads the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game, good enough for fifth in the Patriot League, and sits fifth in the conference in assists with 4.3 per contest. SHOWTIME FOR MATTY K Sophomore forward Matt Klinewski has found his stride this season, scoring in double figures in all but four games. After averaging 3.1 points in nine minutes per contest as a freshman, the Voorhees, N.J. native is second on the team in scoring at 13.9 points per night and leads the way in rebounding with 5.5 boards per game. His 19 double-digit scoring performances are made even more impressive by the fact that he only accomplished that feat twice a year ago. PARTY OF FIVE It s no wonder the Leopards captured their fourth league crown last season with all five starters (Dan Trist, Seth Hinrichs, Joey Ptasinski, Bryce Scott and Nick Lindner) eventually reaching the 1,000-point mark. Scott earned his at home against Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 9, while Lindner reached the milestone on Jan. 16 at Navy. BACKCOURT CAPTAINS Senior Bryce Scott and junior Nick Lindner take over the captaincy this season after the departure of Seth Hinrichs 15, who was the team s lone captain in 2014-15. Scott, an El Dorado Hills, Calif. currently sits in seventh in the Lafayette record books for career three-point field goals (191), seventh for career free-throw percentage (83.6%) and tied for seventh in career three-point field-goal percentage (40.5%). Additionally, Scott has appeared in all but five games during his three seasons in Easton. This season, Scott is averaging 12.3 points per contest on 51-of-116 shooting from beyond the arc (44.0%). Joining Scott to lead this year s squad is the reigning Patriot League Tournament MVP in Lindner. Lindner started 31 games a year ago at point guard and finished third on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per contest. A selection to the All-Patriot League Third Team and a Preseason All-Patriot League selection entering 2015-16, he has been solid this season, picking up Patriot League Player of the Week honors on Nov. 16 after a pair of 27 and 22-point performances in a split week for the Maroon and White. His 162 assists a year ago are good enough for a tie for third in school history, while he currently sits in 14th in career free-throw percentage (80.0%) and fourth in career assists (384). Career Three-Point Percentage MORE RAIN NEEDED Having connected on 261-of-640 three-point attempts a year ago, a 40.8 percent clip, the Maroon and White finished first in the Patriot League and fifth in the nation in three-point shooting percentage. Additionally, the Leopards were one of just 10 teams in the country to shoot above 40 percent from beyond the arc. This season, things have dropped off a bit as the Leopards are fifth in the league in outside shooting percentage at 36.3 percent. The Leopards have had their moments, including a 16-for-24 outside-shooting clinic at Sacred Heart, and hitting 8-of-15 (53.3%) and 8-of-16 (50.0%) in losses to American and Bucknell. FRONTCOURT DEPTH Returning seniors Ben Freeland and Nathaniel Musters, and newcomers Tyler Barlow and Paulius Zalys have been tasked with joining sophomore Matt Klinewski on the frontcourt this season, with each providing different benefits when on the floor. Musters has gotten the nod to start in 16 of 23 games, while Freeland has contributed 4.2 rebounds per game in Patriot League action and earned his seventh start of the year on Monday. Zalys is averaging 23 minutes per game and has grown since entering Patriot League play, averaging 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per league contest. Barlow, who has played in 18 games, had his best game of the season at La Salle, sending back two Explorer shots to go along with four points and six rebounds in 12 minutes of action. That mark is good enough for the fifth spot in the league rankings. O HANLON IN 21st SEASON ON COLLEGE HILL The all-time winningest coach in Lafayette and Patriot League history and longest-tenured coach in the conference, Fran O Hanlon is in his 21st season as the Leopards head coach. A three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, O Hanlon has thrice led Lafayette s program to the NCAA Tournament and lays claim to four Patriot League titles. VETERAN-ROOKIE MIX ON THE SIDELINES O Hanlon s sideline features some familiar faces as well as newcomers this winter. Pat Doherty returns for his seventh season and first as the program s Associate Head Coach, while Matt Blue returns for his first season after five years as an assistant at Hartford. Blue served under O Hanlon with the Maroon and White during the 2009-10 campaign. Additionally, Jimmy Fenerty comes to College Hill after two seasons as a graduate assistant manager at Temple and Conor Dow takes over as Director of Basketball Operations in his first year. AT HOME ON COLLEGE HILL Head coach Fran O Hanlon is one of only seven head coaches to direct the same Division I program since the start of the 1995-96 season. O Hanlon is joined on the list by Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Dave Loos (Austin Peay), Tom Izzo (Michigan State) and Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph s). 1,000 Point Scorers MORE ON COACH O Head coach Fran O Hanlon is the Patriot League s all-time winningest coach with 294 career wins. In addition to owning the all-time wins record, O Hanlon holds the overall (620) and league (290) games coached marks. With the win over Holy Cross on Feb. 19, 2014, O Hanlon set the all-time conference wins mark of 127 and passed former Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery. Coach O currently sits at 139 Patriot League victories. MAKE MORE THAN YOU MISS Offensive efficiency was a key to the Leopards success last season as Lafayette shot better than 40 percent from the field in 29 of its 32 games. The Maroon and White were above 50 percent in 15 of those contests. This season, the Leopards have been over 40 percent in 17 of their 23 games and shot better than 50 percent four times, including a 60-percent effort in the win at Sacred Heart (27-of-45). PLAYING THE MATCHUPS Head coach Fran O Hanlon has been known to run players in and out at stoppages of play, much to the chagrin of official statisticians and public address announcers. Look for the Leopards to sub early and often, while going as many as eight or nine players deep on the bench this season. Coach O had eight or more players tally 10-plus minutes in 16 of the team s 33 games this season. The Leopards have had eight players tally 10-plus minutes in 18 of 23 contests this season. FREE BASKETBALL Lafayette won its only overtime game of the 2014-15 season on Feb. 4, using an 11-of-12 mark from the free-throw line in the extra session to secure an 84-74 win over Bucknell. The Leopards have already surpassed that number in 2015-16, using 11 points from Nick Lindner in the extra session against Saint Peter s to squeeze out an 87-86 victory and dropping a 91-89 decision to FDU. Lafayette played its third and fourth overtime games of the year this past week, falling to Army and Boston U. Head coach Fran O Hanlon boasts a 21-20 mark in his career after regulation time. First-place Bucknell has a three-game lead as it hosts Lehigh, one of four teams tied for second behind the Bison. The contest will be televised by American Sports Network in addition to airing on Patriot League Network. Navy heads to Loyola as both of the teams tied for second place try to get an edge in the standings. The other team tied for second, Boston University, plays host to American while Holy Cross welcomes Lafayette. The week began with two games on Tuesday as Lehigh won 87-72 at Lafayette and Army West Point beat Colgate 82-72. Lehigh moved into the second-place tie with the win, while Colgate fell a half-game behind the group with the loss. Bucknell is one of only three teams in the nation with a three-game lead in a conference race. The Bison are 10-2 or better through 12 League games for the ninth time in the Patriot League s 26-year history. Road teams are 5-2 in the last seven League games, and home squads are now just over.500 at 32-29 in League play. Only five of the 16 completed Patriot League series have ended in a season sweep. FRESH FACES Five newcomers to the Lafayette program have given the Leopards a different feel this season. Tyler Barlow, a 6-8, 192-pound forward, travels to Easton from Corpus Christi, Texas where he was a two-year letterwinner in basketball after transferring from Great Oak High School in San Diego, Calif. after his sophomore season. During his senior campaign, he averaged 16.5 points and 13.8 rebounds per contest. Barlow s squad went undefeated on its way to a district championship last winter and was regional semifinalists each of his last two seasons. Barlow is one of the few rim-protectors the Leopards have on the defensive end and is looked at to provide defense and rebounding during his time on the floor. Coming to College Hill from North Little Rock, Ark., Sam Dunkum, a 6-10, 215-pound center completed his second year of varsity basketball at North Little Rock High School after transferring from Little Rock Christian Academy after his sophomore season. During his junior year, he averaged six points, six rebounds and four blocks per contest to help his team to conference and state championships. Dunkum is currently recovering from a knee injury and will miss the remainder of his freshman campaign. Auston Evans, hailing from McKinney, Texas, is a 6-6, 186-pound wing with the ability to stretch the floor and score from multiple positions. A four-year varsity player at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, Evans averaged in double figures in scoring each of his four seasons. He eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau during his junior season, averaging 16.5 points per game that year. Evans is a three-time All- Southwest Preparatory Conference honoree and earned Team MVP laurels his sophomore and junior seasons. Evans length from the guard position provides a match-up problem for smaller guards. He s seen action in all but three games for the Leopards and scored a career-high eight points against Sacred Heart and Loyola. Jacob Orender hails from Jacksonville, Fla., where he was a three-year starter and two-year captain for his squad. A 6-0, 176-pound guard, he was an All-Conference First-Team and All-First Coast Third- Team performer during his senior season in which he led his team in scoring with 22.6 points per contest. That production earned Orender Team MVP honors as well as a selection to the All-Northeast Florida First Team by In the Game magazine. This past summer, Orender competed as a member of the National Maccabi Team at the Pan-American games. Orender has seen minutes sparingly this season in 10 games for the Maroon and White. Finally, Paulius Zalys, a 6-7, 200-pound forward from Kaunas, Lithuania moved to the Pennsylvania area three years ago, playing on the varsity basketball team at The Perkiomen School in Pennsburg the last two seasons. Zalys averaged 17.3 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per contest during his junior Lafayette s Record When... Zalys is the second Leopard to travel to Easton by way of Kaunas, Lithuania, joining Deirunas Visockas 11, who attended high school in Los Angeles, Calif. before finding a home on College Hill. Despite making his first actual start of his career on Jan. 13 against Holy Cross, Zalys has seen starter minutes the majority of the season, producing with 7.6 points per game, good enough for fifth on the team in scoring and 4.3 boards per game, second behind Matt Klinewski (5.5 rpg) for the team lead on the glass. ALUMS ABROAD Seth Hinrichs 15 and Dan Trist 15 each inked contracts with international squads this summer as Hinrichs signed with FC Porto of Liga Portuguesa de. Basquetbol (LPB) and Trist joined Union Financiera Baloncesto Oviedo of Liga Espanola de Baloncesto (LEB) in Spain. Hinrichs was the lone captain on Lafayette s Patriot League championship team a year ago, finishing the year second in scoring at 13.1 points per game and second in rebounding with 5.7 boards per contest. The LPB, founded in 2008, features 11 teams and is considered the highest professional league in Portugal. FC Porto competed in Proliga a year ago, considered Portugal s second tier of professional basketball, but was no match for its competition, going 27-0 overall on its way to the Proliga crown. As a result of its dominating 2014-15 campaign, FC Porto was promoted to the LPB for the upcoming season. Trist joins the LEB, the second-tier professional league in Spain behind Liga ACB. The league features 14 teams and Union Financiera Baloncesto Oviedo went 11-17 a year ago. Following graduation, he represented Australia at the World University Games in Gwangju this summer, averaging 8.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest in eight games. The Sydney, Australia native was a dominant force in the Patriot League during his senior season a year ago, when he was one of just two unanimous selections to the All-Patriot League First Team. Tops on the team in scoring (17.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), Trist improved every year while wearing the Maroon and White, with his final season helping the Leopards to a Patriot League title. Levi Giese 13 and Tony Johnson 13 continue to play professionally in Uruguay and Mexico, respectively. Giese, following a brief stint professionally in Japan, signed with Club Trouville in Montevideo, Uruguay. Previously, Lafayette s third-ranked shot-blocker in program history (109 blocked shots) competed for Bambitious Nara, an expansion team in the Basketball Japan League.
