SKI BREEZE www.longbeachskiclub.org October 2016 Volume 77, Issue 5 Kris Kolumn Welcome to Ski Season 2016-17!! Ski season north of Mammoth = Great! (Mammoth = ok, see below) Links (coming soon) in the Ski Breeze to the website = Greater October 22 Open House = Greatest La Nina! La Nina! It seems that Mother Nature is playing with us once again. A few days of insufferable heat followed by chilly football weather. More than a dusting of snow on Colorado and Utah mountains a week BEFORE October! Alternate this with the Dog Days of Summer. This is the reality of the moderate La Nina following the weak 2015-16 El Nino. A year ago, equatorial waters were on their way to a 3 o F rise. Those waters have already chilled and will likely cool a few degrees further during the coming months and years. The NOAA forecast is for above average snowfalls in Colorado, Utah, and north. Mammoth is, as always, on the cusp. Our top activity this month is the Annual Open House. Lance has, again, corralled his Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club into hosting this event. It ain t fancy, but the drinks are cheap, prizes more than worth the price of admission, and it s a whole lot of fun! Among the various raffle prizes and silent auction items are several really good bottles of wine, Pantages tickets (always a very hot item), Tickets to the Long Beach Symphony (also quite hot), various gift certificates, a loaf of fruit cake from my great-great-greatgrandmother s recipe (one that I do not alter!), like-knew ladies ski & poles, like-knew
ladies boots, and a whole lot of unique gift certificates. There is a rumor of a few gift baskets being put together, and a few other quality prizes. Regardless, our guest speaker(s) will keep you entertained (even if I don t), and there will be a few interesting potluck items (can you say rice pudding as good as we had at the Mahoney s Pool Party?). Be forewarned: we could have an interesting game that requires your $1 s (half the winnings going to a worthy cause). FYI, you may bring good items to the shin-dig, but please let us know in advance, ok?? FYI, you may also propose a live auction for a worthy product or service. I m sure the entertainment value will be immense. In the next few issues, we are going to try to institute, without the services of a dedicated newsletter editor, links to our website, which will have all the really good stuff! Shep is still holding out for just a few more Members to toss their hats in the ring for the Week Trip to Big White. Craig and others have finally gotten someone to nail down dates for our race weekends at Mammoth. This makes it easier on Roberto and the Club Condos. We still need a newsletter editor! We are posting info on the web site. The Calendar, too. As soon as I get around to it.. an editor could really help. HELP!! In the coming months, we ll try to have links to website pages for the Calendar, websites for other clubs with cool activities, monthly LA Council excitement, and more! Cheers! Kris

Craig s Crag By Craig Gibson New Race Schedule Established for Next Season For those of you that are interested, here is the latest incarnation of our 2016-17 club race calendar. (Ed s Note: Ullr was (is?) the Norse God of Snow) 1/7 ULLR 1 and 2 2/18 ULLR 3 and 4 3/31-4/2 Far West Racing Association Championships at Mammoth The format for the ULLR races will be different next season. There will be 2 races per day, with each race (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) being a best-of-tworun race. That s four runs in one day! Fees for two races (four runs) will be $55/adult and $20/junior. Race fees will be slightly less than last year due to the fact that the ULLR League will be subsidizing these events with their limited cash reserves. We are good for next season, but looking forward, these cash reserves will eventually be depleted. A lot of good ideas have been brought forward on how to address our future financial situation. If you would like to learn more about this or have any ideas to share please join the conversation at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lacouncil/ Craig

Ed s Note 3: From Shep: A new restaurant on your way to Mammoth is in Mojave, a little place called Mojave Cafe, which is where the old Road House restaurant was in the middle of town on your right. Very good food at reasonable prices and also a good bar very soon. Check it out on your next trip to Mammoth. It s a good place to stop either on your way up, or on your way back to Long Beach.
