DOGS BEGIN KEY OVC SERIES AT EASTERN ILLINOIS The Samford University softball team will begin a critical three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Saturday as the teams square off in a series-opening doubleheader beginning at noon at Williams Field. The third game of the series will be held on Sunday at noon. Samford (13-29, 3-7 OVC) heads into this weekend looking to break out of its current four-game losing streak. After being swept in a three-game set by first-place Tennessee Tech last week, the Bulldogs dropped a 9-1 decision to third-ranked Alabama on Wednesday. Samford registered four hits against the Crimson Tide's stellar pitching staff, but committed four costly errors which led to six unearned runs. The Bulldogs are the seventh-ranked team in the OVC and trail Eastern Illinois (21-15-1, 4-5 OVC) by a game and a half for sixth place. The top six teams in the final standings will qualify for the 2006 OVC Tournament, which is to be held at the home stadium of the No. 1 seeded team from May 11-13. Last season, the six-team postseason event was held at Jacksonville State University. Eastern Illinois enters this weekend as the sixth-place team in the conference. The Panthers opened OVC play with a 4-2 record, but have dropped three-straight league games. With the loss, Samford (13-29) was defeated in its fourth-consecutive game and fell to a 2-12 all-time record against the Crimson Tide. Alabama (33-4) won its 14th-consecutive home game and increased its winning streak to 12- straight. Earlier on Wednesday, the Crimson Tide was ranked third in the nation by USA Today, its highest ranking since 2001. Samford was led in hitting by Jessica Owens, Jeslyn Metcalf, Jenna Dempski and Erin Hall on Wednesday. Each of the aforementioned players registered a hit in the game. Alabama jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as the Crimson Tide took advantage of three Samford errors and a couple of key hits to score a trio of unearned runs. Kelley Montalvo and Katie Johnson each reached on errors to lead off the inning and later scored in the frame. Mandy Burford drove in Montalvo on a fielder's choice to third base, while Johnson scored on an infield single from Brittany Rogers. Burford later increased Alabama's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning as she scored from third on Jordan Praytor's bloop single to left field. Samford trimmed the Crimson Tide's advantage to 3-1 in the top of the third inning by stringing together a pair of singles and a pair of sacrifice bunts. Hall opened the frame with an infield single up the middle and then advanced to third on Owens' bunt single to the pitcher. With runners on first and third, Rachael Reeves advanced Owens to second with a sacrifice bunt before Bethany Weisser drove in Hall with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Hall, the Bulldogs' lone senior in the starting lineup, went 1-for-2 and scored her 11th run of the 2006 campaign. Alabama broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning as the Crimson Tide batted around and scored six runs on four hits. Burford came up with the key hit of the inning as she drove in a pair of runs on a single through the left side of the infield. The Bulldogs' junior from Anniston, Ala., went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs. She also scored a pair of runs. SAMFORD PLAYER OF THE WEEK - - JESLYN METCALF, OF Sophomore Jeslyn Metcalf led Samford in hitting last week as the Bulldogs speedy outfielder from Dothan, Ala., turned in a.308 batting average in five games. She finished the week tied for first on the team in hits with four and also drove in a run. Against Troy on March 30, Metcalf went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Bulldogs rallied for a 2-1 victory. She also went 2-for-3 against Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
