(Waverly) A BRIEF LOOK AT THE 2014 NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL TEAM Despite being among the youngest squads in school history, Nebraska returns plenty of experience from a 2013 team that posted a 26-7 record, advanced to an NCAA Regional Final for the second consecutive season and finished the year with a No. 7 ranking. Although the Huskers feature the fewest seniors (1) and most underclassmen (11) in school history this fall, Nebraska still returns five starters - plus libero Justine Wong-Orantes - from 2013. The lone player Nebraska must replace is a key loss, as Kelsey Robinson concluded her career by earning firstteam All-America honors in 2013. She was also chosen as the Big Ten Player of the Year and a finalist for the Honda Award. Robinson led NU in kills (530), attacks (1,206) and aces (32) last fall, while ranking second in digs (229) and fourth in blocks (70). Despite Robinson s graduation, Nebraska still returns plenty of production in 2014. Nebraska returns 96 percent of its assists from last season, led by senior Mary Pollmiller. After splitting time Player early last season with Kelly Hunter, Pollmiller emerged as Kadie Rolfzen the Huskers full-time setter and went on to record 1,279 assists. She earned honorable-mention All-America Mary Pollmiller accolades in 2011 and 2013. NU returns every middle blocker from the 2013 roster. Four Huskers saw action at middle blocker last season, and all four players were either freshmen or sophomores. Junior Meghan Haggerty, an honorable-mention All-America selection in each of her first two seasons, paces the middles, while sophomore Cecilia Hall was an honorable-mention all-region pick as a redshirt freshman in 2013. Led by returning libero Justine Wong-Orantes, Nebraska returns 71 percent of its digs from last season. Wong-Orantes tied the Husker freshman record with 399 digs in 2013. Offensively, Nebraska returns more than two-thirds of its kills from a year ago, despite Robinson s absence. Sophomore Kadie Rolfzen, a third-team All-American last fall, is the leading returner after she totaled 377 kills in 2013, the third-highest freshman total in school history. Her twin sister Amber added 244 kills and overall, Nebraska returns seven of its top eight kill leaders from last season. Nebraska returns three players who garnered All-America recognition in 2013, including third-team selection Kadie Rolfzen and honorable-mention picks Mary Pollmiller and Meghan Haggerty.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL LEADER IN COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS NOTING THE HUSKERS Last Saturday, Nebraska beat Eastern Kentucky 25-7 in set three and Bakersfield 25-8 in set two. Nebraska held three opponents to single-digit points in 25-point sets three times all of last year and did so just twice in 2012 and once in 2011. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Fien notched a career-high 17 kills against Bakersfield. Fien may have had extra motivation, as she is a native of Bakersfield, Calif. For the weekend, she averaged 4.3 kills per set to lead the Big Red, and she is the only Husker averaging more than three kills per set this season at 4.0, which ranks second in the Big Ten and 53rd nationally. Senior setter Mary Pollmiller and sophomore outside hitter Kadie Rolfzen were named to the Flyer- Raider Invitational All-Tournament Team, with Pollmiller taking home MVP honors. After a tough opening weekend, Kadie Rolfzen responded at the Flyer-Raider Invitational with a season-high 15 kills against Dayton and Bakersfield and a career-best.667 hitting percentage against Eastern Kentucky. Rolfzen averaged 4.1 kills per set after 1.0 kills per set on opening weekend. The Huskers rank second in the Big Ten in digs per set (15.53). Kadie Rolfzen (3.38 per set) and Justine Wong-Orantes (3.24 per set) lead the Big Red. With its No. 11 ranking, Nebraska has appeared in every one of the AVCA s 465 all-time weekly polls. NU and Stanford are the only two programs to appear in every AVCA poll, dating back to its inception in 1982. Nebraska has spent a nation-leading 418 weeks in the top 10. The Huskers are 226-0 under Cook when hitting.300 or better. NU is 367-15 (.961) when winning the first set under John Cook. Nebraska is 138-39 against ranked teams under Cook (.780). Just over one-third of Cook s total victories at Nebraska (416) have come against ranked teams. Nebraska volleyball leads the nation with 203 consecutive sellouts, the longest sellout streak in the history of NCAA women s athletics. NU owns a 188-15 record during the streak. SERIES HISTORY Nebraska will be playing Denver for the first time. The Huskers are 1-0 all-time against Colgate, sweeping the Raiders on Sept. 1, 2012 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) in Irvine, Calif. SCOUTING THE DENVER PIONEERS Denver is 5-2 after opening the season with five wins before dropping its last two, 3-1 to Kansas and 3-0 at Colorado State on Tuesday. The Pioneers went 3-0 at the College Park Maverick Classic in Arlington, Texas to start the season, posting wins over Jackson State (3-0), Incarnate Word (3-1) and UT Arlington (3-2). Denver also swept Sam Houston State and Bradley before dropping its last two. The Pioneers have six starters back from last year s squad that went 17-13 and finished second in the Summit League at 10-4. The Pioneers were picked as the Summit League preseason favorite this season. Moni Corrujedo leads the team with 74 kills and is averaging 3.36 per set. She was Denver s leader last year as well with 323 kills (2.96 per set). Setter Bailey Karst averages 9.05 assists per set and 2.18 digs per set. Kate Acker leads the team with 4.0 digs per set. Head Coach Jesse Mahoney is in his third season at the helm with a record of 39-28. Mahoney was the head coach at Fort Hays State from 1999-2004 and compiled a 107-82 record before becoming an associate head coach at Colorado State. SCOUTING THE COLGATE RAIDERS Colgate enters the weekend with a 2-2 record with wins over Niagara and Cleveland State and threeset losses to Pennsylvania and Georgetown. The Raiders went 22-9 last year and 13-3 in the Patriot League, advancing to the conference championship match. The Raiders have four starters back. 2013 Patriot League Player of the Year Diane Seely has a team-high 36 kills and averages 2.57 per set. She is also hitting a team-best.301 and leads the team with 16 blocks. Seely, a senior middle blocker, was voted the Patriot League s top player in 2013 with 355 kills and 97 blocks. She ranked third in the league with a.332 hitting percentage and was fourth in kills per set (3.26) and sixth in blocks per set (0.89). Setter Jackie Macy has 89 assists for 6.36 per set, and freshman Elena Simpson leads the Raiders with 43 digs (3.07 per set). Ryan Baker is in his ninth season as head coach with a 131-110 record at Colgate. He is 154-121 overall in his 10th season as a head coach. AVCA COACHES POLL (SEPT. 8) Rk. NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL LEADER IN AVCA ALL-AMERICANS 4 NEBRASKA BY THE NUMBERS CONFERENCE WINNING PERCENTAGE Nebraska has won 93 percent of its 93 conference matches, owning an all-time record of 508-40. The Huskers have posted 20 undefeated conference seasons, most recently in 2004. Additionally, Nebraska has had 10 seasons with just one conference loss. 84 ALL-TIME WINNING PERCENTAGE Nebraska has won 84 percent of its all-time matches with a record of 1,193-219-12. NU s 1,191 victories rank second in NCAA history. 76 AVCA ALL-AMERICANS Nebraska has produced more AVCA All- Americans than any other program. A nationleading 38 Huskers have been named an All- American, combining for a national-best 76 All-America certificates. 37 CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Nebraska is the national leader with 37 CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates won by 23 academic All-Americans. Those totals not only lead all volleyball programs nationally, but are the highest totals of any female sport in NCAA history. 32 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES Nebraska has made 32 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers have made an appearance in every postseason but the inaugural NCAA Tournament in 1981. Nebraska ranks third nationally in NCAA Tournament appearances, and the Huskers rank second in NCAA Tournament victories (89). 32 CONFERENCE TITLES Nebraska has won 32 conference titles in school history, including 19 combined Big Eight regular-season and tournament crowns, 12 Big 12 championships and one Big Ten title. 11 NCAA SEMIFINAL APPEARANCES Nebraska has advanced to 11 NCAA Semifinals in program history. That total ranks third in NCAA history, and the Huskers have gone on to appear in six NCAA Finals. 4 OLYMPIANS Four Huskers have played for Team USA in the Olympics, including Jordan Larson who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics. Other Huskers who have competed in the Olympics include Lori Endicott (1992, 1996), Allison Weston (2000) and Nancy Metcalf (2004). 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Nebraska has won three national championships in school history, including a perfect 34-0 season in 2000, John Cook s first year as head coach. The Huskers also won national titles in 1995 (32-1) and 2006 (33-2). 2 NEAR THE NATIONAL LEAD Nebraska leads the nation in numerous areas, a list of which can be found on the following page. But the Huskers are also nearing the national lead in other categories. NU ranks second nationally in all-time victories, NCAA Tournament appearances and first-team AVCA All-Americans. HUSKERS LONE SENIOR AMONG THE NATION S BEST Tri-captain Mary Pollmiller is Nebraska s lone senior in 2014. The Huskers may only have one senior, but Pollmiller is one of the nation s top setters. She is in her second season at Nebraska after spending her first two years at Tennessee in 2011 and 2012. Pollmiller NCAA ACTIVE CAREER ASSIST LEADERS Rk. Player, Team 1. Lexi Dannemiller, Michigan 4,489 2. Micah Hancock, Penn State 4,299 3. Mary Pollmiller, Nebraska 4,202 was the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, and she has earned honorable-mention AVCA All-America accolades twice in her career, including last season (also in 2011). Pollmiller owns 4,202 career assists, a total that ranks third nationally. The nation s top three active players in career assists are all Big Ten Conference setters. HUSKERS SERVE UP YOUTH IN 2014 The 2014 Huskers are one of the youngest squads in the nation and arguably the youngest in program history. The Huskers 16-player roster features one senior (Mary Pollmiller), four juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen. Nebraska features the fewest seniors (1) and most underclassmen (11) in school history this season. The one senior on this year s roster ties for the fewest in Nebraska history, as this marks the seventh time in the 40-year history of the program that a Husker team has had only one senior. Nebraska boasts 11 underclassmen on its roster, tied for the most underclassmen on a roster in school history. Nebraska s 1978 roster featured 14 underclassmen and its 1979 roster featured 12 underclassmen, but NU fielded both a varsity and JV team both seasons, and the varsity roster consisted of fewer than 11 underclassmen. The Huskers feature the fewest seniors of any team that was ranked in the preseason AVCA Top 25. Of the more than 330 Division I volleyball programs, Nebraska is one of 48 teams featuring one or no senior. NU is one of 64 teams nationally with 11 or more underclassmen on its 2014 roster. CHALLENGING ROAD AHEAD Nebraska is scheduled to play 13 of its 29 matches this season against teams that were ranked in the preseason AVCA Top 25. NU began its tough slate immediately by facing 13th-ranked Florida State and No. 3 Stanford on opening weekend. Nebraska is set to face four ranked teams in its nine-game non-conference schedule before playing nine of its 20 Big Ten Conference matches against ranked teams. The Big Ten placed eight teams in the preseason AVCA poll, with all eight teams ranked in the top 16. Forty-five percent of NU s regular-season matches will come against teams ranked in the preseason. The Huskers are the only top-10 team that played a pair of ranked opponents in the opening weekend. Nebraska s 13 matches against preseason ranked teams are the second-highest total nationally. The Huskers played a school-record 15 regular-season matches against ranked teams last season, a mark Nebraska could challenge this season. NU s four non-conference matches against teams ranked in the preseason poll are the third-most of any top-25 team. Among the 13 matches against preseason top-25 teams are six matches vs. top-10 opponents. Nebraska will host the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the AVCA preseason poll. In addition to the ranked opponents, NU will play 15 matches - more than half its schedule - against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams, including 12 matches against teams that advanced to the round of 16. TOP FRESHMEN LOOK TO BUILD ON IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE SEASONS Sophomores Kadie Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes produced two of Nebraska s top statistical freshman seasons at their positions in 2013. Rolfzen, an outside hitter, tallied 377 kills as a freshman, while Wong-Orantes produced a team-leading 399 digs. Rolfzen s 377 kills and 3.46 kills per set both ranked as the third-highest totals ever by a Husker freshman. Rolfzen was named a third-team AVCA All-American as a freshman, and she was also the AVCA North Region Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection. Wong-Orantes 399 digs tied for the highest freshman total in Husker history.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL LEADER IN COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS In 2013, Wong-Orantes became just the third Husker freshman to lead the team in digs. This fall, Wong-Orantes will look to become the first player in school history to lead the Huskers in digs as both a freshman and sophomore. TRI-CAPTAINS NAMED During Nebraska s summer trip to Japan and China, the players and coaching staff gathered and discussed captains for the upcoming season. The players unanimously selected Mary Pollmiller as captain, and Pollmiller then sought help in leading the 2014 Huskers. After Pollmiller s request for additional captains, junior Alicia Ostrander and sophomore Justine Wong-Orantes were also named captains. NEBRASKA PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON BIG TEN POLL Nebraska was the preseason choice to finish second in the Big Ten Conference this season, behind defending national champion Penn State. The Huskers have finished first or second in each of their first three seasons in the Big Ten, including a conference title in 2011. Nebraska finished second last season with a 16-4 record. KADIE ROLFZEN AND POLLMILLER NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM Senior setter Mary Pollmiller and sophomore outside hitter Kadie Rolfzen were among 15 players named to the preseason All-Big Ten team in a vote of the league s 14 head coaches. Rolfzen was one of six unanimous selections. Rolfzen was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2013, while Pollmiller was an honorable-mention selection. HUSKERS HOPE HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF FOLLOWING INTERNATIONAL TRIP Nebraska got a head start on its fall season this summer, when the Huskers 12 returning players embarked on a 19-day trip to Japan and China. In addition to sightseeing and team bonding, the Huskers practiced and took on top professional teams during their trip. The NCAA allows a team to take a foreign trip every four years, and Head Coach John Cook has made it a habit to take his team to Asia. The trips have usually paid off with successful seasons. Cook took his first team to Asia prior to the 2000 season, his first as Nebraska s head coach. The Huskers responded with a 34-0 season, and the program s second national championship. In 2006, Cook took his team back to Asia and the results were the : another national championship. The Huskers went 33-1 following their international trip and capped the national title with a 3-1 victory over Stanford in front of 17,209 fans at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Nebraska s most recent Asia trip prior to this summer was in 2010. Although NU did not win the national title that year, it did put together a 29-3 season that included a Big Ten title. Nebraska took a No. 3 ranking into the NCAA Tournament but was upset in a four-set loss at No. 11 Washington in the NCAA Regional Semifinal. In the last three seasons following a Cook-led foreign trip, Nebraska has responded by winning three conference titles and two national championships while posting a 96-4 record. HOME SWEET HOME Nebraska returns for its second season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in 2014. The Huskers first season in the renovated Devaney Center was a historic one. Nebraska set an NCAA record with an average attendance of 8,175 fans per match in 2013. NU led the nation in attendance for the first time since 1992, ending Hawaii s 21-year reign as the national leader. Nebraska has ranked in the top three nationally in attendance every season since 1990 (24 straight seasons). The Huskers sold out every match in 2013, stretching their home sellout streak to 200 consecutive matches, the longest sellout streak in the history of NCAA women s athletics. The sellout streak will reach 205 this weekend, as both matches are sold out. Nebraska owns a 188-13 record during its sellout streak (.935 winning percentage). The Devaney Center has hosted the three largest regular-season crowds in NCAA history and seven of the 10 largest. NU finished with a 16-3 record at the Devaney Center in 2013, including a 7-3 mark vs. ranked opponents. 5 NEBRASKA: A NATIONAL LEADER Nebraska is a national leader in collegiate volleyball.
