Historical note The prison in the Castle Lublin was first established in the early 19th century. At the beginning of World War II, in 1939, the Castle of Lublin became the central prison of the district of Lublin. It was subordinated to the SS chief officer and police, and was liaised with 150 minor agencies in Zamość, Biłgoraj, Kazimierz Dolny and other towns. The Castle of Lublin was one of the largest prisons of occupied Poland with up to 40,000 prisoners being kept there. The prisoners were arrested in mass round-ups and actions of various kind. Most of them were political prisoners however there were also criminals among them. The majority were Polish, but there were also Jews, Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, and occasionally Italians, French and others. From the very beginning, the prisoners were deported to the concentration camps of Sachsenhausen, Dachau, Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, Majdanek, and occasionally to Stutthof. A large part of prisoners died of torture and starvation, many were killed in mass executions or killed in a specially adapted truck that functioned as a gas chamber, and a significant number were sent to concentration camps, from which they usually never returned. After the liberation of this region by the Red Army in mid-1944, the communist authorities continued to use this prison, incarcerating more than 30,000 people there during the following decades. The conditions created for the prisoners were among the most difficult in communist Poland. Indexing terms Więzienie na Zamku w Lublinie. Zamek Lubelski (Prison)--History--20th century.
