Mauscript guidelies Membership i the Udersea ad Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is ot a prerequisite for publicatio i the joural. Mauscripts are accepted for publicatio o the coditio that they are cotributed solely to this joural. Authors submittig a mauscript do so with the uderstadig that if it is accepted for publicatio, copyright is assiged exclusively to the UHMS. UHM has a reasoable assumptio that the CA will cosult with all co-authors or be desigated by the co-authors to act o their behalf. For more, see the sectio etitled Mauscript requiremets, #3. Necessary chages must be clearly idicated o the galley, with correctios set i color text or highlightig. Proofs must be set back withi the time specified by the Maagig Editor through EM. Treatmet of subjects The UHMS edorses the priciples of the Declaratio of Helsiki o the treatmet of huma subjects ad the guidig priciples i the care ad use of aimals approved by the Coucil of the America Physiological Society. For more o these topics see the sectios etitled Scope of the Joural ad Recommedatios from the Declaratio of Helsiki followig. Types of Articles IN THE JOURNAL To meet its resposibilities to its readers ad to the public at large, the Udersea ad Hyperbaric Medicie Joural strives to provide ubiased scietific iformatio ad fair aalyses through its publicatio of the followig types of papers. UHM Istructios for authors Research articles/reports should ot exceed 6,000 words ad have approximately 25 refereces, four tables ad four figures. Papers i this category should cover results of experimetal, theoretical ad cliical ivestigatios o topics importat to the uderstadig of udersea, submarie ad hyperbaric medicie. Short reports that make a substatial scietific cotributio as well as extesive studies will be cosidered. Review articles should ot exceed 6,000 words ad have up to 150 refereces. Loger reviews of exceptioal quality ad relevace should be cosidered. These texts may cover scietific ad practical subjects ad may express persoal opiios of the author, backed by documetatio. UHM Istructios for authors & Scope of the joural Auxiliary publicatios Detailed tables, appedices, mathematical derivatives, extra figures ad other supplemetary matter may be deemed too volumious to be icluded i the joural article. Such material may be submitted for depositio with the America Society for Iformatio Scieces (ASIS), Natioal Auxiliary Publicatio Service, at o charge. The iformatio is deposited by the editorial office with the coset of the author, ad a footote will appear i the published article to the effect that photoprit or microfiche copies are available at a moderate cost. Revised May 2017 SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL Udersea ad Hyperbaric Medicie accepts mauscripts for publicatio related to the areas of divig research ad physiology, hyperbaric medicie ad oxyge therapy, submarie medicie, aval medicie ad cliical research related to the above topics. Scietific papers must deal with sigificat ad ew research i a area related to biological, physical ad cliical pheomea related to the above eviromets. UHM will cosider the followig types of papers: research articles/reports, review articles, short commuicatios (curret issues, techical commuicatios), cliical commuicatios ad cliical case reports, proceedigs of symposiums or workshops, letters to the editor ad book reviews. Reports of major cotributios or symposiums will be cosidered ad may be published as supplemets to regular issues. Authors are referred to Istructios for Authors for more details o the categories. The Udersea ad Hyperbaric Medicie Joural is abstracted ad/or idexed i Chemical Abstract Service, Excerpta Medica, Oceaic Abstracts, Biosciece Iformatio Service of Biological Abstracts, Curret Cotets, Idex Medicus ad Curret Awareess i Biological Scieces. Udersea ad Hyperbaric Medicie is available o 16-, 35- ad 105-mm microfiche from Uiversity Microfilms Iteratioal, 300 North Zeeb Road, A Arbor, MI 48106. The UHMS, as publisher of the UHM joural, ackowledges that all huma research requires iformed coset ad IRB approval i accordace with the laws of the coutry i which the work was performed. This icludes abstracts as well sice they are published i UHM. The Society edorses the priciples embodied i the Declaratio of Helsiki (see below) ad expects that all ivestigatios ivolvig ma reported i its joural will have bee coducted i coformity with these priciples. UHM Scope of the joural Recommedatios from the DECLARATION OF HELSINKI BASIC PRINCIPLES 1. Cliical research should be coducted oly by scietifically qualified persos ad uder the supervisio of a qualified medical ma. 3. Cliical research caot legitimately be carried out uless the importace of the objective is i proportio to the iheret risk to the subject. 4. Every cliical research project should be preceded by careful assessmet of iheret risks i compariso to foreseeable beefits to the subject or to others. 5. Special cautio should be exercised by the doctor i performig cliical research to which the persoality of the subject is liable to be altered by drugs or experimetal procedures. CLINICAL RESEARCH COMBINED WITH PROFESSIONAL CARE 1. I the treatmet of the sick perso, the doctor must be free to use a ew therapeutic measure, if, i his judgmet it offers hope of savig life, re-establishig health, or alleviatig sufferig. If at all possible, cosistet with patiet psychology, the doctor should obtai the patiet s freely give coset after the patiet has bee give a full explaatio. I case of legal icapacity, coset should also be procured from the legal guardia; i case of physical icapacity the permissio of the legal guardia replaces that of the patiet. NON-THERAPEUTIC CLINICAL RESEARCH 1. I the purely scietific applicatio of cliical research carried out o huma beigs, it is the duty of the doctor to remai the protector of the life ad health of that perso o whom cliical research is beig carried out. 2. The ature, the purpose ad risk of cliical research must be explaied to the subject by the doctor. 3a. Cliical research o a huma beig caot be udertake without his free coset after he has bee iformed; if he is legally icompetet, the coset of the legal guardia should be procured. 3b. The subject of cliical research should be i such a metal, physical, ad legal state as to be able to exercise fully his power of choice. 3c. Coset should, as a rule, be obtaied i writig. However, the resposibility for cliical research always remais with the research worker; it ever falls o the subject eve after coset is obtaied. 4a. The ivestigator must respect the right of each idividual to safeguard his persoal itegrity, especially if the subject is i a depedet relatioship to the ivestigator. 4b. At ay time durig the course of cliical research the subject or his guardia should be free to withdraw permissio for research to be cotiued. The ivestigator or the ivestigatig team should discotiue research if i his or their judgmet, it may, if cotiued, be harmful to the idividual. 2. The doctor ca combie cliical research with professioal care, the objective beig the acquisitio of ew medical kowledge, oly to the extet that cliical research is justified by its therapeutic value for the patiet. 6 UNDERSEA AND HYPERBARIC MEDICINE THE JOURNAL OF THE UNDERSEA & HYPERBARIC MEDICAL SOCIETY
