SALINAS VALLEY FAIR RANCH RODEO RULES OPEN CUT AND ROPE: Two person team. Time will start when you cross the flagger line and a # will be given. You must get the correct number animal over the line before you can head it. You can heel it anywhere in the arena. If any number other than the number called comes across the line first, you will be flagged out. A 5 second penalty for front or one hind leg. Three loops allowed. Legal head catches are around the neck or around the neck and one front leg. 3 minute time limit. Progressive after cut off time is established. 3 MAN, 3 HEAD SORTING: This event will be a three person team. There will be 10 head of cattle with 0-9 numbers on their backs which will be gathered together at one end of the arena. You will ride into the opposite end of the arena and when the flagger drops the flag, time will start and a number will be given. You must get your 3 head of cattle to cross the line in correct numerical order (i.e. if your number is 6 you would get 6, 7, 8) without any incorrect out of sequence numbers going across the line before they should. Any wrong number cattle that cross line will make your time stop. Your time will be determined by when the flag is dropped and the correct number of head you have herded over the line. Progressive after cut off time is established. OPEN SINGLE STEER STOPPING: Ropers will come out of headers box from behind the barrier. If the cattle are muley (hornless) then only legal catch will be around the neck. If the cattle are horned then there will be three legal head catches-around the horns, around the neck or half head and one horn. After steer is roped, the roper must stop the steer and face. The roper and the steer must be facing each other to get a flag. Time will stop when the flag is dropped. One loop allowed. Catch pen will be open. Progressive after cut off time is established. OPEN CALF BRANDING: A team will consist of 4 drawn contestants. Each team will rope two calves total. They will switch in the pen after 1 calves. Time limit is 5 minutes. Cattle must be headed before they can be heeled and dallied before ground crew can leave paint can area. Team will be flagged out if ground crew can leave the paint can area. Team crew will be flagged out if ground crew leaves designated area, except to take off illegal catches or lost ropes. Legal catches is neck w/ front foot or a figure 8 w/front foot. Incorrect branding is immediate disqualification. Branding iron must be returned to the pot if calf becomes loose. Then brought back once ropes are tight. If calf goes through or over fence because of unnecessary roughness team will be flagged out. If faulty equipment, calf will be brought back and time will start lap and tap. Progressive after cut off time is established. OVER 50 CALF BRANDING: Will rope 2 calves. Team will pick their own ground crew. 4 minute time limit. Progressive after cutoff time is established. LADIES CALF BRANDING: established. Same as over 50 calf branding. 4 minute time limit. Progressive after cut off time is JR CALF BRANDING: Same as above but only roping 1 head. 4 minute time limit. POINTS SYSTEM: All around & women s all around winners shall be determined as follows: contestants placing first through fifth in each event shall be assigned points with 10 points going to first place, 9 points to second place, 8 points to third place, 7 points to fourth place and 6 points to fifth place. In case of a tie, winner will be determined by money won.
