RIDER INFORMATION The purpose of this guide is to provide riders with as much information as possible pertaining to events occurring during the Tour de Moore. We have organized maps, schedules, general and safety information in order for you to have the best experience possible during your time here at the event. Riders come from all types of experience levels, so we want to ensure that everybody has a proper grasp of all the rules, regulations, and safety guidelines pertaining to riding in a large group cycling event. The event will be held in the rolling Sandhills of North Carolina, featuring climbs, fully staffed rest stops, and an opportunity to encounter the best that Moore County has to offer. Pactet pick up will be held day-of on Monday, September 2 from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM with the option of picking up the evening of September 1, from 5:00pm-6:00pm. the Tour de Moore. We expect all our riders to be self-reliant each rider is responsible for his or her own bike s functionality prior to approaching the start line: tire pressure, chains, etc. We also suggest carrying along with you: 2 tubes, 2 tire levers, 2 CO2 cartridges, and 1 CO2 inflator. We will have one vehicle available for dispatch in case of a major bike failure. Call SAG at (910) 692-4494. We highly recommend all participants to be knowledgeable on basic safety and repair, including how to fix a flat tire. If you are unable to make the repair there will be support available at the SAG stops along the routes. Staff at these locations will be able to assist with minor mechanical issues. Following the rides, the post-ride celebration will be the perfect scene to rest up, refuel, and enjoy live music with family and friends. Strap your bike back up on your car, hang out while enjoying locally provided food, or check out the offerings provided by the on-site Trek factory demo. After the event, visit nearby downtown Southern Pines, or scenic Pinehurst, and historic Aberdeen, and enjoy what the area has to offer! HELMETS REQUERED RULES OF THE ROAD All route options will be supported by a lead moto course marshal. Due to the absence of police escorts we advise and expect all cyclists to obey all traffic signals and rules of the road. SAFETY TIPS Helmets with chin straps must be worn at all times while riding during the event. No exceptions. Be conscious of other riders around you. During a large group ride, other cyclists will not be anticipating a sudden brake or swerve from you, so in case of an emergency, be sure to pull safely off the road and Helmets with buckled chin straps are necessary for each rider participating in the Tour de Moore. They must be worn at all times while on the course. Also, headphones of all kinds will not be allowed to ensure that riders are able to hear oncoming traffic in addition to instructions and warnings coming from course marshals and volunteers. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Medical support is provided at the start/finish. In case of emergency, please call 911.. MECHANICAL ASSISTANCE Please make sure you have properly adjusted your bike prior to starting
out of other riders way before coming to a stop. When merging back onto the route, be sure to yield to traffic. Use standard hand signals to indicate stopping or turning. Calling out your intentions could prove helpful to other riders as well: Left turn: left arm straight out Right turn: left arm bent upward with elbow at 90 degree angle Stop: left arm bent downward with elbow at 90 degree angle Nutrition & Hydration Hydration is essential to performing well, especially during the steamy beginning of September. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids in the days leading up to the event in addition to drinking water A FEW HOURS ahead of your scheduled start time. Arriving 15 minutes early and chugging jugs of water in the parking lot is not the way to handle things. Give your body time to absorb the water and make your ride more enjoyable! There will be food, water, and coffee provided before the event in addition to snacks at the SAG stops and lunch afterwards. But, be sure to prepare yourself with your own water and nutrition. Be sure to advise other cyclists on possible dangers ahead in the road, including potholes, debris, large rocks, glass, speed bumps, etc. You are responsible for getting yourself safely through an intersection even while riding in a group. Traffic situations are bound to change during crossing, especially for larger groups, so be sure to make a safe decision once you arrive at the intersection. Be alert for oncoming traffic as well as traffic coming from the rear. If you are in the front of a group, clearly warn cyclists behind you of the approaching cars by yelling Car up! If you are in the back of a group, warn riders ahead of you by clearly yelling Car back! Slower cyclists should ride towards the right edge of the road as to allow for faster cyclists to pass on the left. When passing, politely shout On your left! to notify cyclists ahead of you before passing to notify them of your location. Feel free to ring a bell if your bike has one available. When riding on narrow roads, leave gaps in between cyclists for cars to pass safely.
