St. Francis of Assisi Sports Program NEW ON-LINE REGISTRATION Dear Parents, The on-line registration will enable the sports directors, parish representative, and coaches to access rosters for their team, and improve the basketball game schedule along with all the other sports schedules. For the diocese, it will enable them to double check the adults who are volunteering to be sure they have attended Virtus Protecting God s Children training and have passed their background check. Registration is a 2 part process. 1. Please complete the attached St. Francis packet. This will allow the sports director to add your student to the roster for their team. 2. Register on line. Once the Director has received your student s registration forms, they will send you the directions to register with the league.

Dear Parents, St. Francis of Assisi Sports Program The St. Francis of Assisi Sports Program is a parish organization under the leadership of the pastor. This will be our 28th year entering teams in the NVJCYO Basketball League. Our objectives for the teams at St. Francis are: LEARN THE SPORT WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM UNDERSTAND AND PRACTICE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP HAVE FUN DOING ALL THE ABOVE Each year our teams have done remarkably well. Much of this has to do with the dedication, time and patience of the coaches, some of whom are parents of players. With this in mind, please remember that any help you can offer your child s coach/team is greatly appreciated. The cover page lists all headings contained in this sports packet. By signing this page you agree that you have read all the information contained in this packet and will abide by and agree to all rules, procedures and fees due. The Cover Page, Permission and Medical slip and Code of Conduct must be filled out and returned with the registration fee (for RE only) by Tuesday, October 24th before your student can participate. If payment of fee must be delayed, send in the signed forms to hold a place on the team. Sincerely, Terry DeVito Sports Director St. Francis of Assisi (540) 752-0492 DeVitot.stas@gmail.com

FEE Participation: $100.00 All monies stay with the program. School students: fee charged to your FACTS account RE students: Make checks payable to: St. Francis of Assisi Memo section: basketball If payment is a concern, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can make other arrangements. TRANSPORTATION Parents are responsible to get their child to and from practices and games. Most of the games are in Northern Va. Expect to travel 45 min. to 1 hour, prior to game time or time mandated to be at the gym. SCHEDULE Coaches will notify player/parents day and time of practice and will either hand out a game schedule or give the web site for the schedule. Coaches will notify parents if there are any changes in the schedule by email. Remember, if your email is down, you must notify your coach. Games are on either Saturday or Sunday. GAME LOCATION Games are played not only at St. Francis but also at No. VA. Catholic Schools, 3 Catholic high schools and some public schools. The 4th and 5th grade teams will play at the smaller gyms usually at St. Ann, St. Agnes, Blessed Sacrament and some public school auxiliary gyms. GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP All players represent St. Francis of Assisi parish and thus are expected to exhibit respect and good manners when they are at practice, games or guests at other parishes or public gyms. Parents, remember these players are elementary and middle school students learning the sport, not NBA players. UNIFORMS All uniforms are the property of St. Francis Sports Program. Due to delays in returning the uniforms by the due date, players will bring a change of clothing to all play-off / tournament games. The uniform will be given to the coach at the end of the final game of tournament for that team. Uniforms are purchased with the fundraising money when needed. All uniforms will be washed and cared for by the player s parent(s) according the washing instructions. All uniform tops both boys and girls must be tucked in. Shorts are to be worn properly to be determined by the coach. NONE of the shorts should be worn below the knees.

FALL/WINTER SPORTS BANQUET The sports banquet will be held in the spring. The date and details will follow later in the season. Basketball, Cheerleaders, Volleyball, Track, Cross Country and Soccer (boys) will be honored at this banquet. ELIGIBILITY A child is eligible to participate in basketball if they are in 3rd 8th grade, attending the parish school or registered in the parish and attending RE at St. Francis of Assisi or attending a neighboring parish school which is a member of the NVJCYO. SPORTS POLICY The St. Francis of Assisi Parish Sports Director and respective coaches have sole discretion on team composition and player placement. The parish sports director and parish sports advisory committee do not entertain complaints regarding a parents differing opinion or evaluations of their child s skill level/team placement. COMMUNICATION Coaches will do most if not all of their communicating through email and / or text messaging. Occasionally a phone call will be made in case of last minute practice or game cancellation. Parent(s) and coaches should communicate with each other when there is a concern about a player. Parent should talk to the coach after practice or through email. They should not approach the coach with their concern before or after a game. PARENT PARTICIPATION / INVOLVEMENT Parents are an important part of any sports program. Without your involvement, children would not be able to get to and from practice and games, there would be no coaches, sports directors, sports committee etc. Remember, those who volunteer to coach need your cooperation and support. If you feel a need to talk to a coach about his/her coaching approach, please consult with the coach and see if a different approach would work better for your child. A good coach is open to any concerns from the parents. Both parties should be respectful of one another and never demeaning to each other. CODE OF CONDUCT NVJCYO BASKETBALL/CHEERLEADER LEAGUE 1. At no time is a parent or fan allowed to approach an official, timekeeper or scorekeeper in a confrontational manner before, during or after the game. Any violation of this rule will result in a forfeiture by the team and the parent or fan barred from the games for the rest of the year. 2. No parent, siblings or fans are allowed on the court during a game, in between quarters, half time or end of game.

3. Parents and fans should cheer in a positive manner for both teams. No uncharitable or unchristian-like comments will be made about your own team players or the opposing team. 4. Players, coaches and fans will refrain from yelling or attempting to distract the shooter while either team is attempting to shoot their foul shot. This is not high school. college or the NBA. It shows un-sportsmanlike conduct. 5. No child of any age is permitted in the hallways or on any equipment in any gym used by the NVJCYO. They are to be in the stands with their parents at all times. They must be accompanied by adult to the restrooms. 6. There is no smoking, eating or drinking of anything you can put in your mouth and or digest in any gym at any time in any facility used by the NVJCYO. 7. In facilities where there is a stage, NO ONE is allowed on the stage at any time. 8. No team is allowed to meet in the hallways prior to, during or after the game. There is plenty of room in the gym. 9. Cheerleaders are not to meet or warm up in the hallways of any facilities used by the NVJCYO. 10. Any fan accompanying, a coach, player, and /or family, will be made aware of these rules by the same. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PRACTICE AND GAME RULES 1. Player who misses practice without a valid excuse will be ineligible to play subject to coach s discretion, in games that same week. Missing practice or a game because of another sporting event, dance lesson/recital, scouts etc. is not a valid excuse. If you miss one of your practices each week due to a parish activity it will be up to the coach s discretion as to whether your child will play a full quarter that same week. 2. Parent is to make sure player calls the coach if they are unable to attend practice or game. 3. Player is expected to arrive at games 30 minutes prior to the scheduled game time. 4. Parents attending practices or games are to refrain from sideline coaching such as calling to a player from the sidelines or stands on how the play should be executed. 5. All siblings not participating in the sport must be sitting in the stands, with an adult or parent at all times. No small children should be on the court or the sidelines due to

possibility of injury. No child should be playing basketball during game breaks or between games. 6. Parents must pick up their children on time after practice. Parents, siblings or other adult will come into the gym to meet their child. Parents must make eye contact with coach to let them know you are leaving. No player will be allowed to leave the gym without an adult with them. 7. No parent/adult is to drop off a player without first checking to see if the coach is in the gym. Any player dropped off without the coach present will be signed into day care (during operating hours) at the parents expense. If daycare is not open, and player is left unsupervised, the coach will call the parent. Parent will have to attend the next two practices in order for player to participate. This is a safety issue. 8. All concerns/complaints should be addressed to the coach first. If they cannot be resolved, parents are to contact the parish sports director who will meet with the parent(s) and coach. If no solution can be found, parents must submit in writing their concerns/complaints in a signed letter to the parish sports advisory board with a phone number and time to contact them. They may send the letter to the school addressed to the Sports Advisory Board. PLEASE NOTE: this is a parish organization under the leadership of the pastor.
