For a couple of weeks in July, Don and I will be vacationing at the Grand Canyon. We plan to enter a rain dance competition (just kidding, but maybe) and we ll report back on any such high bluff, southwestern experiences. I m The DJ I usually come straight from work and grab a Big Mac on the way to set up my equipment, while you are having dinner, showering and relaxing before a night of dancing. by Jim Rose I have invested far more than I will ever recoup in music, equipment, and time. I m not responsible for the lighting, heating, air conditioning, drink prices, cover charge, lights on in the parking lot, double parking, phone calls, lost jewelry, and the condition of the dance floor. Please don t be offended if I don t play your request right away, there are usually a few ahead of you. Stop by the DJ booth every once in a while and see if you can get me something from the bar, I ll even buy yours. If I m playing too fast for you I m probably playing too slow for someone else. I will do my very best to provide a fair mix of styles and speeds to please everyone, that s what I m paid for. When the party is over, and you are out to breakfast, I m rolling up cords, and loading equipment. Let me know where you are going I would really enjoy getting to know you better and sharing a cup of coffee with you. It s not about the money, I really love what I do, and hope it makes you happy, brings back a memory, and takes your mind off the work a day world for a little while. 4 Well, as usual, the dancing was HOT at this year s 11 th annual Grand National Dance Championship (GNDC) in Atlanta, GA. I m sure Craig, and Don & Audrey (as attendees) will all agree! FYI BBC Meeting Minutes Treasurer s Report: $549.65 Membership: 60 members Special Board Meeting: June 28, 2005 It was decided that a BBC Party, Cannon Ball Summer Blast, will be held on August 13, 2005 at the Fraternal Order of Police Club located in Fredericksburg off Route 1. A workshop will be offered with Jr. Grand National Champions Brennar Goree and Autumn Jones. The workshop will begin at 7:00 PM for beginners and intermediates. The party will begin at 8:00 PM. The cost of the workshop is $10.00 for singles and $15.00 for couples. Admission to the party is $8.00 for members and $10.00 for Non-members. Pot Luck will be provided by members and a committee will be formed to set this up. Also, discussed was whether or not to have another BBC survey (from Eve Fish) sent by E-mail and it was agreed it should be. From the survey, a drawing will be held and the winner will receive a free dinner from the Tuesday night BBC menu at The Loft. Results were still coming in for the Tuesday or Thursday BBC survey. Audrey will speak to the Loft owner as to what would be involved when the Band will be setting up on Thursday. Our next meeting will be August 9. GNDC doesn t disappoint! by Betty Russell by Heather Jennings This event is hosted yearly by past National Shag Champions, Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee over Memorial Day weekend. It is a world class event held at the spectacular Renaissance Waverly hotel. For those who have never attended, you should definitely consider adding this event to your calendar for next year! The event weekend begins with an early-bird party on Thursday night in the Grand Ballroom. Friday the real fun begins with FREE beginner shag, swing and lindy workshops starting off the day and then later that evening the Carolina Classic (shag) division opens the competition. Continuing on Saturday and Sunday, 10 more divisions of competition follow, but Grand Nationals isn t just about competition and world class dancing. It also provides over 15 workshops throughout the weekend. Both shag and swing workshops are offered at a very reasonable price of $10 per person so you have multiple options, but only pay for those you want. You also have ample opportunity to social dance in between the competitions or you can skip a division (if you must) to social dance in the 2 nd ballroom where social dancing is the rule, often until the wee hours of the morning. Sunday of course, is also the night of truth where the winners are announced and the awards given away. Following the awards, there is lots of partying and general dancing. A fantastic end to a fantastic weekend! COUNTRY DANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS XIII January 11-16, 2005, Opryland Hotel, Nashville, TN Sponsored by the United Country Western Dance Council (UCWDC) by Melissa Carter Lipps Ihave loved dancing since I was a teenager, and started Line Dancing at San Antonio Rose on Princess Anne Street (later to be known as Houstons, and currently Central Station) about 12 years ago. In 1998, I decided to try competing. I qualified for and competed in the Gold Division (60 years and older) of the Country Dance World Championships in 2001 (placed 2nd), 2003 (placed 5th), 2004 (placed 4th), and in 2005 (placed 1st). UCWDC has 46 sanctioned events annually, plus the annual Worlds event. Membership is truly international and includes events in 11 countries; USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain. Most events include competition in Line Dance, Couples Dancing, and Pro Am (students dancing with their instructors). Line Dance competition consists of dances in six tempos: rise & fall (waltz), lilt (east coast swing or polka), smooth (2-step or west coast swing), latin (cha cha or rumba), funky, and novelty (this year s was an Elvis medley).
