review & history 61

62 Year in Review: 2008 The Longhorns made their eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2008, showing why they are one of the top programs in the nation. With a core group of five seniors and a wealth of underclassmen that would make an impact immediately, Texas continued its move into the upper echelon of collegiate soccer programs. Consistently ranked in the top 20 throughout the year, UT posted its ninth-straight doubledigit win total with a record of 13-4-4, including an undefeated record of 6-0-4 at home in the friendly confines of Mike A. Myers Stadium. The 2008 season also produced the program s first three-time National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America (NSCAA) All-American in senior defender Kasey Moore, along with setting program records on the defensive end of the field. Senior keeper Dianna Pfenninger continued her reign in the UT record books as she led the Horns to 11 shutouts, breaking the singleseason school record of 10 set in both 2006 and 2007 while also only allowing 14 goals, another program record. Pfenninger s 0.65 goals-against average also shattered the UT record of 0.85 set by the senior in 2006 and 07. Head coach Chris Petrucelli s Longhorns wasted no time in setting the mood for the season as they jumped out to their best start in program history with a mark of 7-0-2, including five shutouts. UT opened the year in dominating fashion with a 4-0 victory over Samford, highlighted by senior defender Stephanie Logterman s first career multi-goal match. Freshmen Courtney Goodson and Amanda Lisberger also had 2008 in Review Longhorns continued to rewrite the defensive record books as they broke the single-season school mark in shutouts (11), goals allowed (14), Big 12 goals allowed (five) and posted a school-record four-straight shutouts. 2009 Texas Soccer Texas recorded its ninth-straight doubledigit win total with a 13-4-4 record in 2008 and advanced to its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship. The Horns also posted an unbeaten record of 6-0-4 at home, extending their home unbeaten streak to 26 matches. career days, netting goals for the first time in burnt orange. Texas offense stayed hot in its next match scoring three goals in a matter of two and a half minutes to defeat Kentucky on the road 3-1. Kentucky got on the board first in the 51st minute but its lead was short-lived as Moore scored twice. Lisberger then netted her second in as many games just 30 second after Moore s to give UT the victory. Two days later, UT showcased another exciting victory as sophomore Niki Arlitt scored from 25 yards out in the 103rd minute to lift the Horns to a 1-0 win over No. 25 Louisville. The next home match was an important one since Petrucelli entered the game with 299 career wins. His players didn t disappoint with a 3-0 victory giving their coach his 300th career win, making him just the seventh coach in Division I history to accomplish the feat and just the fourth to do it in 18 seasons or less. Petrucelli was honored by the Texas athletic department for his achievement at Sunday s home match against Arizona. The team also decided to honor him with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Arizona. Despite the Wildcats scoring first, the Longhorns didn t give up. Goodson once again played beyond her years as she scored both of UT s goals, including the winning header in the 105th minute. Her play didn t go unno- Kasey Moore became the first UT soccer player to earn back-to-back-to-back NSCAA/adidas All-America honors, and was also tabbed as the 2008 Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year. ticed though, as she was honored as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. The Horns had a little extra time to rest after the intense Arizona match when their meeting with Houston was cancelled due to inclement weather from Hurricane Ike. Up next was the other Arizona school from the Pac-10, Arizona State who battled hard to give UT its first tie of the year in a 0-0 double overtime stalemate. Against TCU, Texas was able to get out front first but faltered right after the second half whistle to let the Horned Frogs even up the score in the 49th minute. Without any team able to find the back of the net in regulation, the Longhorns found themselves in overtime for the fourth time of the season and the third time in as many games. Luckily for UT though, Logterman was still riding her offensive streak and connected on a Courtney Gaines assist for the 2-1 victory in Fort Worth. The first true test of the non-conference season was next on the docket with No. 18 California making the trip to Austin. The Bears found the back of the net in the 29th minute for the advantage but once again the Horns wouldn t go out without a fight. In the 72nd minute, freshman standout Goodson got her head on a Gaines corner kick to net the equalizer. With the final minute counting down, Texas kept up the pressure and was rewarded as Moore scored with 40 seconds left for the win. The road to the NCAA Championship wouldn t get any easier with the start of the Big 12 play the following week and a league-opening match against in-state rival and top 10 foe Texas A&M coming to town. With Texas ranked No. 7 and the Aggies at No. 8, it was sure to be an exciting match. The 5,585 fans in attendance didn t hurt either as they marked the largest crowd to witness a UT soccer match. Texas entered the match with a 5-15-0 record against the Aggies but had won four of the last five contests. After 110 minutes though, neither team was able to penetrate the other s defense for the rivalry s first tie in 21 meetings. Big 12 play kicked into high gear after the A&M match with Texas suffering its first loss of the season on the road at Nebraska. The Longhorns didn t stay down long though as they bounced back to mount a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Iowa State just a day and a half later. Freshman Lucy Keith stood out for the Horns after assisting junior Emily Anderson on the equalizer and then netting the gamewinner and

first goal of her career in the 63rd minute. A weekend road trip at No. 22 Colorado and Texas Tech also proved tough for the Horns as they returned to Austin with a 1-0 loss to the Buffs and a 1-0 victory over the Red Raiders. The offensive spark that started the season returned in a 4-0 rout of Oklahoma in Austin the following weekend. Three athletes also scored their first goals of the season - Jill Gilbeau, Kendall Campise and Kirsten Birkhold - while junior Emily Anderson racked up her third score. In their second to last home match of the season, the Longhorns were up against No. 18 Oklahoma State, who entered the contest with the nation s best offense while UT was carrying one of the nation s best defenses on their backs. The scale tipped slightly in the favor of the Burnt Orange as the two squads dueled to a 0-0 double overtime tie. Texas kept the Cowgirls scoreless for the only time that season and picked up their eighth shutout of the year. Moore, a defender at heart, continued to be hot for the Horns on the offensive end at Kansas the following week. She collected her fifth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Erica Campanelli to give UT its fifth road win. Sunday s match at Mizzou was next and the Horns were up for quite a challenge from the No. 20 Tigers. Another nail biter was in the cards for Texas in Columbia after neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. Mizzou came out firing in the second half and was successful in the 58th minute to take the 1-0 advantage. Once again, Texas refused to go down quietly and after moving Moore to the front line, the defender out of California was able to get UT back in the game with a goal in the 76th minute. With just 14 minutes remaining, both teams were giving it all they could but in the end it was the freshmen in Burnt Orange that came out on top as Goodson assisted Keith on the gamewinner in the 83rd minute. All that was left on the schedule before the Big 12 Championship was a home match against Baylor in the senior s last game at Myers Field. The league season closed on a similar note to how the year had been playing out, as neither team scored for another 0-0 double overtime tie. The Horns wrapped up Big 12 play with a 5-2-3 record to earn the sixth seed in the league s Senior Stephanie Logterman earned NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America Second Team honors as well as a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship. 2008 in Review 2008 big 12 conference final standings Conference overall W-L-T Pct. Heading into the tournament as the twotime defending Big 12 Champs, the Horns had a lot to live up to and Mizzou wasn t going to let another one slip by. The Tigers eliminated UT with a 3-1 victory en route to winning their first ever Big 12 Postseason Title. Just two days later, the Longhorns waited to hear their NCAA fate as the field of 64 was announced sending. UT was sent to the west coast to face Washington State out of the Pac-10 on the campus of the University of Portland. The team shook off their loss in the Big 12 Tournament and came out attacking in the First Round vs. the Cougars. Junior Emily Anderson continued her offensive surge and scored the game s lone goal to advance UT to the second round for the third-straight year. Waiting in the wings was host Portland who not only held the home field advantage but had a 8-0-0 mark all time against Texas. After a tough 90 minutes, the Pilots were able to come out on top with a 2-0 victory, ending another successful season for the Horns. NCAA, NSCAA and Big 12 Recognition Kasey Moore became the first UT soccer player to earn backto-back-to-back NSCAA/adidas All-America honors. Moore was also tabbed as the 2008 Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight year. Stephanie Logterman became the first Texas Soccer player to receive a prestigious NCAA postgraduate Scholarship she also earned the Big 12 s Prentice Gautt postgraduate scholarship and picked was selected to the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All- America Second Team. Junior Emily Anderson also collected numerous academic accolades with her ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection. Anderson was also a First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection. Four Longhorns were named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Team. Anderson, Logterman and senior defender Jill Gilbeau were named to the First Team; sophomore defender Erica Campanelli earned a Second Team selection. Three Longhorns were selected All- Big 12 Team. Seniors Logterman, Moore and senior keeper Dianna Pfenninger were all named to the first team. UT s three First-Team selections were tops in the league and this marks the third-straight year that Texas has placed at least three student-athletes on the First Team. Freshman Courtney Goodson was also named to the Big 12 s All-Newcomer team. The Big 12 also honored eight Longhorns for their academic success.
