Fantasy Ballet Camp Summer Intensive Prep (Ages 3-6) This popular camp provides a wonderful exploration of dance, music and art in a creative and intimate environment. Each of the five weekly sessions has a special theme and activities are based on Virginia Stapleton s unique curriculum infused with ballet classics. Camp is led by Miss Megan, Miss Lauren, and others from our nurturing and experienced staff, assisted by teen dancers. Each day, our little dancers enjoy class, story time, arts and crafts, snack time and more! Costumed characters come to life, visiting camp to perform and interact with the children. At the end of each week, parents enjoy a captivating performance. Campers are divided into two groups based on age. Note: Must be 3 years old on or before March 1, 2019. Students turning 3 between March 2 and June 30 accepted on trial basis. This rigorous all-day program will build your strength and stamina and prepare you for the rigors of Intensives at Boston Ballet, CPYB, SF Ballet, Nutmeg Conservatory, Joffrey and more! Story Ballet Camp The Nutcracker (Ages 6-8) Led by Miss Lauren, this week-long exploration of the beloved ballet will engage and inspire young dancers. Students will explore the plot, setting and characters; and collaborate to create a short performance. Daily ballet class and fantasy games will further their skills in ballet technique in a creative and engaging way. Each day we will have a different project to embellish our understanding of the ballet story, such as painting scenery or making props- all in preparation for the production on the final day. It will be a magical week, sure to capture the creative spirit of your young dancer. Meets: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Session: August 5 9 Junior Ballet Intensive (Ages 9-12) This unique program is designed for our middle range dancers, striving for a more rigorous and intensive camp experience. Dancers will refine their technique and maintain their strength through barre and center work, strengthening and pre-pointe exercises, and learning and creating new choreography. Each day, the two groups come together for a lecture/ demonstration that will expand their knowledge about the world of dance, stagecraft, nutrition and wellness. There will be two levels of instruction based on ability and age. Ideal for students who have been identified as near pointe-ready and those who have recently been placed en pointe, as it offers an intensive course of study to build pointe skills in preparation for the fall and Nutcracker season. Classic Intensive (Ages: 10 years and up) Our rigorous all-day program will focus on classical technique - pointe work, men s class, and variations. Students will train with Guest Balanchine artists Wilhelmina Frankfurt and Steven Caras, joined by Balanchine faculty members Shelley Scott and David McNaughton. Their approach will expose each dancer to a variety of technical methods, designed to advance each student s strength, speed, agility, and knowledge. Choreographer David McNaughton will be staging excerpts from his delightful original ballet, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Intensive will culminate in a performance which will also include Stars and Stripes finale, inspired by Balanchine s great Americana masterwork. Ms. Frankfurt and Ms. Scott will serve as Ballet Mistresses for the McNaughton piece, coaching and refining the dancers in their roles. Mr. Caras, Emmy Award winning dance photographer, will document Ms. Frankfurt, Ms. Scott and Mr. McNaughton working with dancers throughout the process. Virginia Stapleton, founding artistic director of The Stapleton School, plans to present The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in its entirety in the spring of 2020. Ms. Stapleton is also exploring the possibility of traveling with the cast to perform The Adventures of Tom Sawyer at the prestigious 2020 Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. In 1992 the fledgling Stapleton Youth Company performed this ballet to critical acclaim at the Fringe Festival in Scotland. Note: The Classic Intensive is open to dancers in Youth Company 2 and higher this season. Contemporary Intensive Open Class (Ages 13 & up) This week long contemporary dance intensive will be led by Casey Lee Thorne, Bay Area artist, teacher, and Artistic Director of Inside Out Contemporary Ballet. Geared towards ballet trained dancers who want to try something new, students will experience a variety of movement styles including a GYROKINESIS warm up as well as developing skills in floor work, inversions, and release technique. In addition, students will have the opportunity to create their own dances as they experiment with classes in composition and improvisation. This is sure to be a week of fun and creativity as we expand the possibilities of what dance can be. Join us! We will present an in-studio demonstration on the final day. Meets: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Session: June 17 21 (Ages 12 & up) Summer training is essential for aspiring dancers, as flexibility, strength and technique can diminish over the long summer break. Summer session offers the ultimate in convenience: you pick the days and weeks you want to take class. The best news: you ll come back strong and well-prepared for fall ballet and Nutcracker season. Daily two hour class for students in Advanced 1-4. *Asterisked weeks offer class for students currently in Ballet 4 & 5. Special focus on Nutcracker audition preparation during the week of August 19. Musical Theatre Camps Each one week session of Musical Theatre camp includes instruction in voice, dance, basic acting technique and working as an ensemble; and culminates with an in-studio performance. No previous theater experience required- Boys encouraged to join! Director Barbara Kessell has performed and assistant-directed with the Stapleton Theatre Company for 15 years and has over 20 years experience teaching music to children. World of Disney (Ages 5-8) We ll sing, dance and act to some of your favorite Disney musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and more! On Your Feet (Ages 8-11) This high energy week of camp will delve into popular contemporary musicals such as Matilda, Waitress, On Your Feet, and more! Session: July 29-Aug 2 Meets: 9:30-12:30 Session: Aug 12-16 Meets: 9:30-12:30 Jazz & Musical Theatre Dance Camp (Ages 8-11) Join us for this exciting camp to explore the Jazz techniques that influence Broadway musicals, Hollywood, and music videos. A special focus on the legendary Bob Fosse and his influence on musical theatre-shows such as Pippin, Chicago and Cabaret. An in-studio demonstration will take place on the final day. Bella Qureshi has done choreography for stage and for television. Fee: $250 Meets: 9:30 am to 12:00 pm Session: July 15-19 Musical Theatre Workshop Ages 8-20 Directed by Ashley Kimball Musical Direction by Judy Wiesen This summer we are proud to present a full-length performance workshop for young actors. Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl s Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, Miss Honey. Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda s extraordinary personality. Matilda s school life isn t completely smooth sailing, however the school s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils saving grace! This show is packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs and many great roles for all. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.
