Johnny Jones Head Coach 3rd year at LSU (15th year as head coach) The 2014-15 season at LSU is Johnny Jones third as head coach of the Tigers and that is important. But more importantly, the Jones legacy at LSU hits an important milestone in 2014-15. 20 years: Four years as a player. 13 years as a member of Dale Brown s coaching staff Now, three years as the head coach at LSU. In two years, Jones has established his program at LSU from foundation to building the floors of the program. His teams have won 39 games over those two years (the most by any LSU coach in their first two years as head coach in the long Southeastern Conference era) and the Tigers appearance last year in post-season made him only the second LSU head coach in SEC history to take the Tigers to a tournament in the first two years. Now as the 2014-15 season begins, he has his staff in place and his players in place with more on the way to make the LSU program a continued player on the league and national stage. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and served as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. In his time at LSU, the Tigers have brought in nationally-ranked recruiting classes and two of those players enter the season off results that earned them SEC citations. Jones in his two seasons have put on the floor teams that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that makes players want to showcase their talent in a team concept. In his opening statement after being hired, Jones brought back the HIT philosophy of LSU Basketball that Coach Dale Brown used when Jones played and coached. The HIT philosophy stands for Hard, Intelligent and Together. More than anything, Jones, since his hiring on April 13, 2012, has gone out of his way to embrace all aspects of the community, traveling throughout the state on the LSU Tiger Tour and speaking to civic groups and youth organizations. Included in his points in all his stops was how much he wants people to embrace LSU basketball. It s not only fans he wants The Johnny Jones Record /----OVERALL---/ /---CONF.---/ to hear that message but high school coaches who are excited again to have LSU coaches visiting with them on a regular basis. LSU and Coach Jones has a successful booster club that gathers before each game for food and scouting reports in the practice facility prior to each home game, Jones is also hosting public luncheons each month to talk to fans about their basketball program and the luncheons are drawing strong crowds each month during the season. In his first year at the helm, the Tigers won 19 games and became one of the league s toughest teams by winning 10-of-their-last-16 games against SEC competition while making a school record 234 three-pointers while posting five players scoring in double figures. It was a team that brought memories of Coach Brown s first team in the 1970s that was known as The Hustlers. In 2013-14, the Tigers came right back and won 20 games and advanced to post-season play for the first time since 2009. LSU advanced to the NIT and went to San Francisco and walked away with a victory. Johnny O Bryant, who would be selected in the NBA draft by Milwaukee, would earn All-SEC first-team honors, as would freshman Jordan Mickey. Aother freshman, Jarell Martin, would overcome an early ankle injury to earn freshman All-SEC honors with Mickey. This is Jones third career head coaching position he has served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the 1999-2000 season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the 2001-02 season. At LSU, Jones 19 first-season wins in 2013 was the second most games ever won by a first-year LSU coach. In Jones first two seasons, LSU has averaged over 70 points for the first time in consecutive seasons since the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. Then the player would turn assistant coach and be on the bench with Coach Dale Brown for another 407 contests. As a player at LSU, besides playing on the 1981 NCAA Final Four team, Jones started 54 career games. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, asst.) in an NCAA Final Four. Johnny Jones and his wife Kelli, have two children, John and Jillian. YEAR SCHOOL W-L PCT. The Numbers Game Here are some of the important numbers with the LSU basketball program:. 107 This was the 106th season of basketball at LSU. 15-3 -- LSU record when scoring 80 or more points in the Coach Jones era. 7 -- No. of games LSU hit at least 9 treys in a game last season. 1-2 -- Record in overtime games last season; 2-3 in Jones tenure. 27-9 -- Record in Jones era when outrebounding opponent 11-0 -- Record when holding oppoents to 36.4 percent or lower field goal percentage. 7 -- Wins in Jones tenure when down at halftime (including opener with GWU) 12-1 -- Record in Coach Jones era when shooting 50 percent or higher from the field (7-1 in 2013-14) 15-1 -- LSU record under Coach Jones when opp. has 20 or fewer field goals made (8-0 in 2013-14). 11-4 -- Record last year when LSU shoots 35.7 percent or better from the three-point arc. 8-1 -- When LSU records 45 or more rebounds in the Coach Jones era. 12 -- Wins by 5 or fewer pts in Jones era (since 2008, 29-21 in close games of 5 or fewer ). 3 -- Number of times, LSU has come from either 16 or 17 points down in a game to win in Jones era. 14-0 -- Under Johnny Jones when allowing fewer than 60 points (7-0 last year). In Opening Games-- The Tigers, with their opening day win, is now 87-20 in opening game of the season Coach Jones is now 2-1 in opening games, 2-0 in games at LSU. Last Time Out LSU 93, Gardner-Webb 82 (Nov. 15, 2014) -- In a mainland game for the upcoming Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands, LSU s offense proved to be too much for the Bulldogs of Gardner Webb in the opener at the Maravich Center. The Tigers did not show a lot of defense in the first half, actually trailing, 43-42, but LSU s offense kicked into high gear and despite giving up 80-plus points, posted 51 points in the second half to score the win. LSU led for 32:28 of the contest as four LSU players posted double figure numbers. Jarell Martin had his second career double double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordan Mickey had 21 points and six assists. Josh Gray had 18 points and Keith Hornsby 17 points. Those four combined to shoot 31-of-52 (59.6%, Martin 8-16, Mickey 9-11, Hornsby 7-14, Gray 7-11) as LSU won for the 12th time in 13 games in the Johnny Jones era when shooting 50 percent or better (36-69, 52.2 percent). In scoring 51 second half points, LSU made 19-of-34 FGs (55.9%) in the final 20 minutes. Free Throws Start Good There have been times when free throw shooting has not always been LSU s best friend. It has been since the championship season of 2009 the last time LSU shot 70 percent from the free throw line for the season Last season, LSU made 66.9 percent (473-707) and 62.5 percent in 2013 (384-614). 2014-15 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

So what do the Tigers do? They come out against Gardner-Webb and make 13-of-14, the first time LSU has shot better than 90 percent at the line since Dec. 22, 2012 when LSU made 12-of-13 at Marquette. Four players shot free throws Martin and Tim Quarterman were 4-of- 4, Mickey 3-of-3 and Gray 2-of-3. Jones and Tigers Have Fast-Paced Offense Scoring Well Well, LSU and Coach Johnny Jones up-tempo offensive beliefs were in full-play against Gardner-Webb as the Tigers needed all their points to get through the game as the defensive effort was somewhat lacking early on in the game. But the 93 points marked the fifth time (4 wins) LSU has scored 90 or more points in Johnny Jones time at LSU and the Tigers are 15-3 when scoring 80 or more points in his two years and one game. LSU averaged 74.7 points per game last year, one of LSU s best scoring totals since 2005 when LSU averaged 75.2 points a contest... It also marked the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons when LSU averaged over 70 points in two consecutive seasons... LSU s recent scoring averages: 2014 -- 74.7; 2013 -- 70.8; 2012 -- 65.4; 2011 -- 62.2; 2010 -- 61.5; 2009 -- 74.8; 2008 -- 68.7; 2007 -- 68.0; 2006 -- 73.1; 2005; 75.2. The Tigers were one of three teams to score over 90 points in the opening weekend of play by teams in the Southeastern Conference. The ESPN Tip Off Marathon It s certainly not the 4 a.m. CT tip in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii that is an annual staple or the 10 a.m. CT tip that LSU had at UMass a year ago But the Tigers and Texas Tech will play as part of the Tip Off Marathon on Tuesday in the last game of the Marathon starting at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2. It s the second straight year that LSU has played in the event and last year s season opener for LSU at UMass was one of the more entertaining games of the event with LSU falling, 92-90. The game with Texas Tech is the first of 12 regular season games that will air on one the ESPN family of networks ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU. Scouting Texas Tech -- LSU and Texas Tech meet in the back half of a home-and-home series which neither year has been a declared part of the SEC/Big 12 challenge set of games (LSU will go to West Virginia for that on Dec. 4). Last year in a foul-filled game (45) on Dec. 18, 2013, the Tigers were able to get away from Lubbock with a 71-69 road win. The four players in double figures for LSU are no longer with the team this year including seniors Shavon Coleman and Andre Stringer; Milwaukee Buck Johnny O Bryant III and Anthony Hickey, who is now at Oklahoma State. Texas Tech enters the game 1-0 after a 71-59 win against Loyola Maryland Friday night. Norense Odiase led the Red Raiders with 16 points and 10 rebounds as he became the first freshman center to start a season opener for Texas Tech. Tech started one senior (Robert Turner), one junior (Randy Onwuasor) and three freshmen (Justin Gray, Zach Smith and Odiase). It was the first time in school history that the Red Raiders have started three freshmen in a game. In all, three other Red Raiders scored in double figures - Devaugntah Williams (13), Toddrick Gotcher (10) and Keenan Evans (10). Tubby Smith is in his second season at Texas Tech and is 15-18 at the school. He is in his 24th season and has won 526 games at Tulsa, Kentucky. Minnesota and Texas Tech. Well, the Tigers do return 10 double doubles from last season (Jarell Martin 1, Jordan Mickey 9), with Mickey tied for the most career double doubles entering the year at nine with Gavin Ware of Mississippi State... LSU returns two members of the All-SEC teams as Mickey was named second team All-SEC, All-SEC defensive team and a member of the All-SEC freshman team with Martin. Mickey averaged 12.7 points per game last year (24th in the league) and was second in the SEC in field goal percentage at 53.3%... His 7.9 rebound average was fourth in the league and of course led the league in block average at 3.1 a game. Martin averaged in double figures as well (11.4) and averaged more (5.2) in league play. Wait, No Blocks, Six Assists The stat sheet may have seemed a little unusual in one regard from last year to this year s first game sheet that came out after Saturday s opener with Gardner Webb. Now Back to the Block Numbers-- Okay, no blocks for Jordan Mickey in the opener, but here is where he stands after just 35 career games on the school block list: 1. Shaquille O Neal 1989-92 412 2. Chris Johnson 2005-09 176 3. Stromile Swift 1998-00 130 4. Storm Warren 2008-12 121 5. Garrett Temple 2005-09 113 6. Glen Davis 2004-07 110 7. Jordan Mickey 2013-106 It was with his first block against Kentucky (3/14/14), on a layup attempt by James Young with 8:46 to play in the first half, Mickey got his 100th block last season... He was the 11th different Southeastern Conference player to block 100 in a season at least one time: 186 Anthony Davis, Kentucky, 2012 170 Jarvis Varnado, Miss. State, 2009 170 Jarvis Varnado, Miss. LSU used 13 different 5-man combinations during the contest with Gardner-Webb with LSU s starting lineup playing 11:43 seconds with a +16 total. Going For Fourth Consecutive Winning Season At LSU -- The Tigers won 20 games last season, giving LSU three consecutive seasons with winning records (18 in 2012, 19 in 2013, 20 in 2014). Now three consecutive winning seasons may not seem like much but when it comes to streaks of winning season in LSU s basketball history, there are only five streaks that are longer 4 from 1932-35; 5 from 1977-81; 6 from 2002-07; 9 from 1914-22; and, 11 from 1982-93. The Pre-Season Polls and Accolades The Tigers were picked anywhere from third to fifth in the SEC, depending on the poll including a fourth place choice in the SEC Media poll behind Kentucky, Florida and Arkansas. Web sites and magazines have dropped accolades on some of the Tigers in the preseason: CBSsports.com put the LSU men s basketball front court fifth in the country in its top 10 behind only Kentucky, Wisconsin, Arizona and Texas. Of the LSU frontcourt, writer Sam Vecenie said, Last season, LSU might have had the best frontcourt in the entire country. Combining returning players Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin with the now-departed Johnny O Bryant, the Tigers dominated the interior and nearly earned an NCAA Tournament berth... This season, sophomores Mickey and Martin return, which should again give the Tigers a fearsome twosome that teams will try to avoid playing attacking. Mickey is the defensive wizard, a long shot-blocking dynamo who relies on his tremendous athleticism to create an impact on the game. Offensively, he s best off the dribble and in transition, where he can allow that athleticism to shine. On the other end of the spec- 2014-15 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

trum is Martin... can knock down shots from the outside and has a more polished dribble-drive game. These two should combine to dominate the paint for the Tigers and lead them back to the NCAA Tournament after a six year absence... Both Mickey and Martin were listed in the top 100 players as selected by both ESPN.com and CBSsports.com and Mickey earned a second-team pre-season All-Defensive team selection by CBS. Athlon s had both players in their list of the nation s top sophomores for 2014-15. Jon Rothstein of CBSsports.com posted Josh Gray in his 10 best (no particular order) junior college transfers to watch; and, Keith Hornsby in his top under-the-radar transfer players list. Hornsby, Bridgewater Finally Get To Play Again For Keith Hornsby and Brian Bridgewater, the game Saturday will be their first since approximately March 2013 as far as contests in the usual basketball season is concerned... Hornsby transferred to LSU after the 2012-13 season at UNC-Asheville and sat out the 2013-14 season. He was however, able to practice with the LSU team last season. Bridgewater last played a regular season basketball game in the Top 28 tournament in March 2013 season for Scotlandville, but due to a glitch in getting transcripts through the NCAA Clearinghouse he was unable to play for the Tigers... He was unable to practice but was able to receive aid and attend LSU during the 2013-14 school year. Hornsby s opener has bene documented, but Bridgewater got six minutes on the court, making 1-of-2 field goals with 1 assist. New Players Make Debut LSU wasn t the only team in the league with players making collegiate debut, but the Tigers did have four players making their first appearance in a D1 college game Bridgewater, Jalyn Patterson, Aaron Epps and Elbert Robinson III. Here s the report card on their first outings: Bridgewater 2 points, 1-2 FG, 1 ast, 6 minutes Epps 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1-4 FG, 1 ast, 3 blocks, 1 stl, 18 minutes Patterson 5 points, 2-6 FG, 1 trey, 5 rebounds, 14 minutes Robinson III 0 points, 5 rebounds, 0-2 FG, 1 assist, 14 minutes, 1 start Will Three-Pointers Continue To Fall? In Johnny Jones first two seasons, the Tigers attempted a record of 658 in 2013, the most since 624 since 2008. LSU followed that with 675 attempts in 2014 to top that mark... More importantly, LSU broke a 10-year-old mark in 2013 (215), making 234 and the Tigers were just under the record in 2014 with 231 makes. LSU shot 34.2% from the three-point range in 2014... The school record was set in the very first year of the three-point range of 40.1 percent. LSU opened up making 8-of-23 attempts (34.8%), with Hornsby making three and Gray making both of his three-point attempts. Martin, Patterson and Tim Quarterman made the other treys. Tim Quarterman Gets Solid Minutes LSU sophomore Tim Quarterman had some good play in LSU s exhibition game against Morehouse and he also had some good play in the opening game against Gardner-Webb Saturday. Quarterman played 18 minutes, made one field goal (a trey) but also got fouled and made all four free throws to total 7 points with 2 assists and a steal. Quarterman gives LSU a lot of versatility this year as he is able to play the 1, 2 and 3 positions as the game goes along, depending on what the coaching staff wants to put out on the floor. LSU s Past Stars in the NBA The Tigers have six players on NBA rosters at present: Brandon Bass -- Boston -- 10th season in the league Glen Davis -- LA Clippers -- 8th season in the league Marcus Thornton -- Boston --6th season in the league Garrett Temple -- Washington -- 5th season in the league Justin Hamilton -- Miami -- 2nd season in the league Johnny O Bryant III -- Milwaukee -- 1st season in the league Bass, Temple, Thornton and Hamilton have had some significant playing time, while Davis is returning to play after a season-starting injury. O Bryant suffered an injury in the preseason and has yet to dress for a game this season for the Bucks. As expected, Simmons signed with the Tigers, and the LSU compliance office announced it had received and approved the national letter-of-intent papers... The 6-10 forward, an Australian native, plays for Montverde in Florida. The school has won the last two prep national championships and is ranked No. 1 in the country entering the 2014-15 season by USA Today. We are thrilled to have Ben Simmons and his wonderful family officially join the LSU basketball family, said LSU Head Basketball Coach Johnny Jones. His talent level, hard work and passion for the game will allow him to make an immediate impact on the program. Last season, Simmons averaged 18.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while shooting 69 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the free throw line. He recorded 88 blocks as well. Montverde was 28-0 last season, closing with a 71-62 victory over Oak Hill Academy in the Dick s Sporting Good High School National Tournament at Madison Square Garden. Simmons had 24 points and 12 rebounds, earning MVP honors... This past summer at the NIKE EYBL Peach Jam in Georgia, Simmons averaged 18 points, 6.5 rebounds and almost three assists for a Florida-based team. He was later named the high school MVP at the NBAPA Top 100 camp and also attended and had a strong showing at the LeBron James Skills Academy. Simmons is ranked No. 1 in America by Rivals.com, 247 sports.com, ESPN.com and No. 2 by Scout.com. Although former signees have won national high school post-season awards after their senior seasons, this is believed to be the first No. 1 player the Tigers have signed in the early signing period. Next Up Game Then Plane Then Warm Weather and A Basketball Tournament The turnaround for departure will be very quick for the Tigers after an 8:30 p.m. basketball game on Tuesday night Wednesday, LSU will depart Baton Rouge on a commercial flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands where it will take part in the annual Paradise Jam.
