2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 12th season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in 2005-06, as the Hawks went from a 10-12 record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a 19-14 mark. Martelli s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003-04 when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the 03-04 squad that went 30-2, the 2004-05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24-12. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 12-year career record is now 231-130, but more impressively, his teams have gone 141-54 in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and needs just six to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay s total of 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.640) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is 116-62 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In 2003-04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995-96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the 1976-77 season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, the St. Joseph s Prep graduate was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA To u rnament teams in both 1974-75 and 1975-76, serving as team co-captain as a s e n i o r. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph s. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: Ahmad Nivins scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half as Saint Joseph's rallied to beat Charlotte, 75-70. Pat Calathes and Darrin Govens (career-high) added 14 points apiece. Saint Joseph's trailed by 13 in the first half and 11 early in the second before Nivins went to work inside. He scored seven points in an 11-2 run that gave the Hawks their first lead with 5:47 left. Nivins' two free throws with 3 minutes left made it 66-63 and Rivera's layup with just over 2 minutes left gave the Hawks a 70-65 lead. After Charlotte cut its deficit to 70-67, Calathes hit a jumper with 34 seconds left then made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put it away for SJU, which shot 64 percent in the second half. Charlotte hit 11 3-pointers in the game, but the Hawks went 18-for-24 from the foul line. A WIN TONIGHT... : A win tonight would give the Hawks their best A-10 start (3-0) since the 2004-05 squad won its first four conference games. A win would also be SJU s 10th of the season, which would be the fastest since the 2003-04 team went undefeated. In both 2004-05 and 2005-06, the Hawks did not record their 10th victory until February. COMEBACK KIDS: The Hawks fought back from a double-digit deficit at Charlotte to pull out a 75-70 win. It was the largest deficit (13 pts in 1st half; 12 in 2nd) overcome for a win this season. Down 45-33 with 15:40 to go, the Hawks outscored Charlotte 24-11 to take their first lead, 57-56, with 6:50 to play. The game featured 64.3 percent shooting and only six turnovers in the second half by the Hawks. ON FIRE: Phil Martelli is pleasantly surprised with the way the Hawks have been shooting the ball as of late, with the team hitting a combined 52.9 percent from the field and 55.5 from 3-point range in the past two games. The better shooting percentage could also be a direct correlation to the Hawks taking better care of the ball, limiting themselves to just 20 turnovers in the two games. RIVERA S RECOGNITION: D.J. Rivera was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the week ending January 6, for the first weekly award of his career. Rivera scored 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting in just 18 minutes of action on Jan. 3 in Saint Joseph's 89-41 victory over Duquesne. He also added two rebounds, two steals and an assist. NOTING NIVINS: Ahmad Nivins was named the Big 5 Player of the Week as he averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in wins over Duquesne and Charlotte. On the week, he shot 11-for-16 (68.7%) from the field and was 14-of-17 (82.3%) from the foul line. PHIL VS. FRAN: Phil Martelli and Fran Dunphy are close friends and share a passion for their work in Coaches vs. Cancer. On the court, Martelli holds an 8-4 edge in games coached against Dunphy while he was at. CITY RIVALRY: Today is the first Big 5 game of the year for Saint Joseph s, in one of the most traditional and unique arrangements in college basketball. SJU was 3-1 in the Big 5 last, suffering its lone loss to in the game that decided the outright title. SJU has won a total of 19 Big 5 titles (9 outright/10 shared), which is second all-time to s 22 titles (5 outright/17 shared). A loss to on Jan. 25, 2005 snapped a 10-game Big 5 winning streak. KEY TO THE CITY: SJU owns a 19-5 record against city teams over the last five seasons (counting this year). This mark counts all games against Philadelphia teams (Drexel included). The Hawks were defeated by Drexel in December of this year. He s now averaging 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds, while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the foul line. TOUGHING IT OUT: Despite suffering a sprained right ankle in practice on Jan. 5, Rob Ferguson started and played 31 minutes at Charlotte. The junior finished with eight points and six rebounds. SEASON-BESTS: The Hawks posted some of their best numbers of the season in the win over Duquesne. They were: most points (89); assists (28); blocks (10); largest winning margin since Jan. 24, 2004 (114-63 win at ) best shooting percentages - FG (56.3%); 3-pt (37.6%); FT (100%) fewest turnovers (9) fewest points by an opponent in a game (41) and a half (12) GIVEN BY GOVENS: Freshman reserve guard Darrin Govens leads the Hawks in assists (3.55) and tops the A-10 in assist/turnover ratio with 2.6. Govens handed out a season-best seven assists against Duquesne and has totalled 21 in the past five games. The sophomore responded with 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting and followed that with his ON THE LINE: Despite being the top free throw shooting team in the nation last year (79.9), it has been one of the Hawks biggest inconsistencies this season. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 first double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Boston University. He earned All-Tournament honors at the Holiday Festival and is now averaging a team-high 16.2 points and 7.2 rebounds on the year. LOSING THE LEAD: SJU lost a 10-point lead in both halves against Hofstra. The Hawks actually led by 11 points with 13 minutes to play. And then after holding a 57-50 lead with 9:27 to play, the Hawks went for seven minutes without a field goal, until Ahmad Nivins scored a 3-point play at 2:55. The remainder of the Hawks points came from the foul line, but a tie with 31 seconds left set the stage for the Hofstra game-winning shot. Nivins went 5-for-10 in the game while Ferguson was 6-for-15. On the season, Nivins is averaging 9.0 shots per game with Ferguson taking 10.3 per game. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks limited BU to a dismal 2-for-20 shooting effort in the second half of the win on Nov. 27. The Terriers scored their last field goal of the game with 12:21 to play, while amassing 26 turnovers in the contest. The defense did the same thing to Duquesne, holding them to 16 consecutive missed shots and without a field goal for 10 minutes in the first half. SJU limited DU to just 14.3 percent shooting in the first half while forcing 18 turnovers in the game and blocking a season-high 10 shots. GIVEN BY GOVENS: Freshman reserve guard Darrin Govens leads the Hawks in assists (3.55) and tops the A-10 in assist/turnover ratio with 2.6. Govens handed out a season-best seven assists against Duquesne and has totalled 21 in the past five games. At Charlotte, he had what Phil Martelli called his best college game, with a career-high 14 points and four assists in 29 minutes. Martelli said it wasn t the points that stood out, but the fact that he had the right pace of the game and had the guys running with him. PAT S PLAY: Pat Calathes has been one of the Hawks more consistent scorers, tallying double figures in all but four games. The junior is second on the team in rebounding (6.4, 3.1) and assists, while scoring 11.8 ppg. He also ranks among the A-10 leaders in six different categories, including blocked shots, rebounding and free throw shooting. TO THE POINT: Although Phil Martelli prefers to not label his guards by position, he does have five players capable of running the point, and has the flexibility of using a number of combinations in the backcourt. Jawan Carter is the primary point guard, but at times, Darrin Govens, Pat Calathes, Garrett Williamson and D.J. Rivera have filled that role. GIVEAWAYS: Turnovers have been a trouble spot for the Hawks, as they average 16.0 per game, with 19 or more in four games. The Hawks rank 12th in the A-10 in assist/turnover ratio with 0.83. SJU has turned the ball over 219 times, while handing out 182 assists. Things have improved as of late, as the Hawks had a season-best ratio with 28 assists and just nine turnovers vs. Duquesne. At Charlotte, SJU committed only 11 turnovers. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 116. (after Duquesne win): Every night won t be like this, but that was a good way to start the new year and the new league (season). I would say we moved forward. (on Garrett Williamson): Jameer (Nelson) called me this summer and said, Coach, you ve got a guy that I can t get by. I thought who could that possibly be. Jameer said it was Garrett. Garrett has a fire in his belly that really drives him... It thought his defense really turned the (BU) game. (on D.J. Rivera s defense against Bucknell): He s a fierce competitor. Certainly at the defensive end of the floor you re going to get maximum effort.. You have to look at the tape to figure out how he got two of those balls. But the two balls he came up, and this is with the greatest reverence, that was like Tyrone Barley. One second the guy had the ball and all of a sudden he (D.J) had it. I was happy with the toughness at that point. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That s what I think has to happen if we re to have success. The bottom line is - at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league.

2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and URI. WATCHING THE HAWKS: Four SJU games will be televised in Philadelphia on Comcast SportsNet, with more outlets nationally to be announced, via the CSTV Network. The games are Jan. 13 vs. (2 pm); Jan. 21 vs. (Noon); Feb. 4 vs. (Noon); and Mar. 3 vs. UMass (4 pm). All four game times have changed from the original schedule. The appearances are part of the Atlantic 10 s new agreement with CSTV. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Phil Martelli is giving plenty of minutes to his freshmen, and SJU has often had three or four of them on the court at the same time. Jawan Carter and Garrett Williamson comprise the starting backcourt, with D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens being among the first players off the bench. Williamson and Carter are tied for fourth on the team in minutes played, averaging 26.1, with Rivera at 23.6 and Govens seeing 22.7 minutes per game. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Hawks are 5-0 in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse this season and are 58-8 (87.8 winning pct.) over the past seven years. During the course of 58 seasons in the Fieldhouse (counting this one), the Hawks have won 80 percent of their contests on the home court, with the overall re c o rd now at 310-76. THE FOUR FRESHMEN: In the Saint Mary s win, SJU had four freshmen on the court for one of the longest periods of the season thus far (approx. four minutes). The Hawks trailed 16-11 at the time, but Rockwell Moody, D.J. Rivera, Garrett Williamson, and Darrin Govens (replaced by Jawan Carter) teamed with upperclassman Rob Ferguson, and then Pat Calathes, to overtake the lead, 17-16. SJU used that momentum to outscore the Gaels, 7-2, at the end of the half and then go into halftime tied, 30-30. STEALING AWAY: The Hawks rank fifth in the Atlantic 10 in steals per game (7.4) while D.J. Rivera is fourth with 1.8 per game. SJU registered a season-high 16 steals in the Bellarmine win, the most for the Hawks since the NCAA Second Round win over Liberty in 2004. Rivera had a career-high six steals vs. Bellarmine which was the most since Jameer Nelson had six in the Liberty game. CALLING ON ALVIN: Sophomore Alvin Mofunanya made his first start of the season against Saint Mary s in place of the injured Ahmad Nivins and notched four points in 14 minutes. Mofunanya now has two career starts to his credit, with the first coming last season. In his first start against St. Bonaventure (Feb. 4, 2006), he recorded a career-high 13 points on 5-for- 8 shooting in 21 minutes. THE COMEBACK KID: Darrin Govens made an extremely quick return to action playing in the Boston University game, just 10 days after having surgery on his fractured right hand (fourth metacarpal). Govens, who had surgery on Nov. 17, asked to participate in practice on Nov. 26, and then was cleared by the doctor just hours before the BU game. The freshman made an impact, playing 24 minutes and scoring 11 points, while making 3-of-3 3-point field goals. He s now averaging 22.7 minutes per game. INSIDE INFO: SJU players are hearing the words, pass it inside more than they have in the past few years, with frontcourt players Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins proving to be the main scoring threats. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Nivins currently leads the team with 16.2 ppg while Ferguson is scoring 12.0 ppg. DOUBLE DOUBLES: Freshman Garrett Williamson had the first doubledouble for a Hawk this year with 10 pts-10 rebs against Boston Univ. Ahmad Nivins has registered one so far with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the second meeting with BU. Pat Calathes has come close three times, with nine rebounds. STRONG FINISH: After a 4-7 start in conference play last year, Saint Joseph s finished strong, putting together a five-game winning streak heading into the A-10 Tournament, and finishing with a 9-7 mark. The Hawks then went on to win three straight in the conference tournament, before losing to by a point in the championship game. PERIMETER PLAY: SJU seemed to be without that defined 3-point threat that they ve had over the past few years, but Rob Ferguson is close to filling the role. He s currently hitting 44.7 percent from beyond the arc, with Pat Calathes posting the second best number at 40 percent. The team is shooting 38.2 percent on the year and made a season-high 10 3-pointers against Duquesne. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in 2000-01. Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester, PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli is putting one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. The freshmen have already seen ample playing time and on a number of instances, three or four of them have been on the floor at the same time. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A sylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In 2005-06, SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to. Freshman Jawan Carter was named to the 2006-07 Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted the season. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph s and will enroll in the University in the fall of 2007. Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in 2006. He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for 2007.

2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 7 THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 405 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the 1993-94 season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, 1993. HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a 141-54 record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. FRESH FACES: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the sylvania All-State 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic careers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Tatnall School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera s Neumann-Goretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. NEW FACES: Phil Mart e l l i has two new faces on the bench with first-year assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overt o n. Duda served as the head coach at M a rt e l l i s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a 143-68 re c o rd with two conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at La Salle and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. An All-Big 5 selection, he also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and came to SJU after a year as the director of player development for that team. F o rmer SJU standout Mark Bass is the veteran on the staff, as he is now in his eighth year with Martelli. WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. The 6-4 guard averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds as the Cyclones sixth man last season, and was named to the Big 10 All-Bench Team. Carr attended University City H.S., but then graduated from Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Carr can practice with SJU and will have two years of eligibility left. IF YOU BUILD IT...: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at Saint Joseph's. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 17,700-square foot center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for men's and women's basketball. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student re c reation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. A permanent practice area for men's and women's basketball will also be added to the Rec Center during phase two. Phase three is the expansion of the Fieldhouse to include a full-service concourse around the perimeter of the arena and an increase in capacity by at least 1,000 seats. It is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph- Macon College. MUST-SEE TV: It doesn t have as long of a run as Law and Order, but the most unique coaches tv show in the nation - Phil Martelli s HawkTalk - is in its 11th year. Called the nation s best coach s show by The Sporting News in 2001, Martelli hosts the unscripted show in a Tonight Show setting with a variety of guests. It will air on Comcast SportsNet every Wednesday at 11 p.m. beginning on Jan. 10 (except for Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.) and then nationally on CSTV on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. Comcast SportsNet will air replays on Thursdays at either 4:00 or 4:30 p.m. (check listings). H AWKS IN THE PROS: Saint Joseph s is currently re p resented in the NBA by 2004 first-round picks Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic) and Delonte We s t ( B o s t o n Celtics), as well as 2005 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Dwayne Jones (Cleveland Cavaliers). Here are their current stats: Nelson - 30 starts, 13.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.1 apg West - 31 games, 10 starts, 9.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.5 apg Jones - 1 game, 1.0 rpg CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk will return for its 11th season in 2006-07. The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. The show will air locally on Comcast SportsNet on Wednesdays at 11 p.m. (except for Jan. 31 at 7 pm) beginning on January 10. It will be aired nationally on CSTV on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. Martelli s HawkTalk Radio Show will air live every Monday (beginning on Jan. 8) from the Boulevard Restaurant in Havertown, PA, from 7-8 p.m. and be broadcast on WNTP (990 AM). INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletic website, www.sjuhawks.com with game notes, and live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games. The newly redesigned site introduces video streaming for the first time this year. Through Hawks All-Access, fans can watch and listen to every game from Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. THE HAW K The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06. One of the most famous mascots in college s p o rts, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 season. B rennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for thre e years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semest e r, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA.
