The Bulldogs have won 12 consecutive games dating to March 20, including nine-in-a-row in TranSouth Conference action... Cumberland owns a 15-10 mark against Trevecca since the start of the 2002 season, including 8-4 at Ernest L. Stockton Field... The Trojans won both regular season meetings last season in Nashville but the Bulldogs defeated TNU, 4-0 and 7-5, in the TSAC Championships in Millington, Tenn. Old rivals meet again Cumberland and Trevecca meet on the diamond for the 26th time in the last eight years, with the Bulldogs posting a 15-10 mark against the Trojans since the start of the 2002 season. Cumberland is 8-4 at Ernest L. Stockton Field against TNU over that span. No team has won more than three games in a row, with CU s streak of three coming in 2007, including a doubleheader on April 28 and a victory in the TranSouth Championships on May 4. W, 7-5 Wheeler continues hitting streak Senior Michael Wheeler singled and homered Wednesday in CU s 19-8 victory over ninthranked Campbellsville, pushing his hitting streak to 13 games, tied for tops on the club. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native is batting.479 (23-for-48) during the stretch with fi ve doubles, 12 runs scored and 15 RBIs. He has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 outings dating to March 4 versus Bellevue University, a 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI day against the then sixth-ranked Bruins. He added three hits the next day against Embry-Riddle and has collected three hits three times during his current streak versus Georgetown College, at Campbellsville and against Union University. Wheeler also has two hits in a game four times during the 13-game streak and has driven in multiple runs four times. The Friendship Christian School product leads the club in batting with his.435 average and also is tied for fi rst in hits (40) and doubles (9) while ranking fourth in RBIs (22). Wheeler ranks second in the TranSouth in batting, third in hits and sixth in slugging percentage (.674) and total bases (62). He also ranks 49th nationally in hits per game (1.481). Kikla extends streak to 13 with big day Junior infi elder Sam Kikla extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a big day in CU s 19-8 victory over ninth-ranked Campbellsville Wednesday, hitting a pair of home runs, driving in fi ve runs and scoring three times in the triumph. The Malabar, Fla., native is batting.404 (19-for-47) during the stretch with three doubles, three homers, 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 contests dating to February 27 with eight multi-hit outings. He collected a pair of hits in two of the three games at Embry-Riddle in March and has hit safely in 10 of the 11 TranSouth contests in which he has played. Pitching big part of success For a staff that had to replace nearly 90 percent of its innings, the current group of arms, especially the three guys throwing on the weekend for the Bulldogs, have been a major part of the team s current 12-game winning streak and 10-2 mark in TranSouth Conference play. Juniors Shawn Schaefer and Robert Post and senior Richard Timbrook have all pitched very well, posting a 9-1 combined mark with a 1.78 ERA in TSAC action. Schaefer has been the workhorse, tossing a pair of nine-inning affairs and 30.0 total innings in four TSAC starts with a 3.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts. The lefthander has won his last four decisions. Post tossed a fi ve-inning no-hitter at Lyon College and has allowed just four earned runs in four league starts, striking out 31 in 23.1 innings of work. The righthander has allowed only seven hits and opponents are batting just.092. Post ranks fourth nationally in opponent batting average for all games (.163), hits allowed per nine innings (4.97), 31st in ERA (2.16) and 50th in earned runs allowed (1.43). Timbrook has won six consecutive decisions and has given up just one earned run in 22.2 innings of work in conference play. Since then the Ocala, Fla., native has given up just one unearned run in four contests, including a fi ve-inning relief effort in a 10-inning victory at Lyon College on March 28. In that game Spivey allowed just two hits and the one run with three strikeouts, keeping the Scots at bay until Max Kautz s two-run homer in the 10th won it for CU. Spivey owns a 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings of work this season with 10 strikeouts overall and a 1-0 record. Kautz had multiple hits in fi ve consecutive outings (March 21-29) and multiple runs in four of the eight games. Kautz, Post selected TSAC POW Juniors Max Kautz and Robert Post were selected the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, March 29 as named by the conference offi ce. Kautz hit.563 during CU s four victories with nine runs scored, three doubles, one home run and fi ve RBIs. He also drew two walks while posting a.938 slugging percentage. The Palo Alto, Calif., native posted at least two hits in all four games for the week. Kautz hit a game-winning two-run homer in the 10-inning, 11-10 victory over Lyon College in the fi rst game of a doubleheader. Post posted a fi ve-inning no-hitter in his only appearance of the week. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native struck out eight and walked three against Lyon in the no-hitter and allowed just an unearned run on a throwing error in the contest. Sprague voted TSAC Pitcher of the Week Junior Adam Sprague was voted the TranSouth Conference Pitcher of the Week on February 23 after posting his second victory of the season, versus Iowa Wesleyan. The lefthander from Winter Park, Fla., tossed six innings, allowing just two earned runs, striking out six and walking two against the Tigers. CU ranked 11th in preseason The Cumberland baseball team ranked 11th in the 2009 NAIA Baseball Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll announced in November. The Bulldogs posted a 46-21 record last season and fi nished the year one win shy of their fi fth straight NAIA World Series appearance. The Bulldogs and 28th-year head coach Woody Hunt returned four starters from last year s club, including catcher Mike Wheeler, who hit 15 home runs and had 64 RBIs, as well as outfi elder/dh Zack Diekmann, who belted eight home runs with 26 RBIs. CU had to replace almost its entire pitching staff that posted a team earned-run-average of 3.74 last season and allowed opponents to bat just.258. Gone from roster are eight pitchers who accounted for 75 percent of last season s innings. Hunt elected to Sports Hall of Fame Cumberland baseball coach Woody Hunt was be one of 11 greats induced into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on February 20 at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. Others who were inducted include Sam Bartholomew, Jr., Philip Hutcheson, Joe Gilliam, Jr. (posthumous), Tommy Owen (posthumous), Andy Nelson, Sarah Ingram, Elliot Perry, Tim Priest, Stan Huntsman and Chip Kell. Hunt has served on the baseball staff at Cumberland for 30 years, three as an assistant in 1978, 79 and 81 and then as the head coach since 1982. CU was a two-year school his fi rst two seasons and became a four-year institution beginning with the 1984 baseball season. The Belmont University graduate has compiled 1,193 victories in 27 seasons as head coach at CU and an 1,132-463-3 mark as head coach since 1984. He is one of only six coaches to register more than 1,000 career victories in NAIA. It marked the fi fth Hall of Fame in which Hunt was inducted. He had previously been inducted into the NAIA, Cumberland, Boyle County [KY] and Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Halls of Fame. CU picked to win TranSouth Cumberland s baseball team was picked to win the TranSouth Conference in a preseason poll of the league coaches announced in January by the conference offi ce. Cumberland received six of the eight fi rst-place votes in a poll of the league coaches and tallied 62 total points. Trevecca received the other two fi rst-place votes and had 58 total points for second place. Union University, Martin Methodist and Lyon College ranked third, fourth and fi fth, respectively, with Freed- Hardeman, Bethel College and Mid-Continent rounding out the poll. In 2008, Trevecca won the regular season title, with Cumberland taking the TranSouth Tournament championship.
