After leading by one at halftime, UT opened up a 7-0 run early in the second half to lead 52-43. Vandy answered with a 10-0 run of its own and the game stayed close down the stretch as the Commodores were within one point of the Lady Vols with 1:30 left in the contest. A driving lay-up and a couple of free throws by Kara Lawson sealed the affair for UT. Lawson scored 26 points in the win, while Shyra Ely added 13. THE SERIES Tennessee and Vanderbilt have a storied past. This will mark the 44th meeting between these Southeastern Conference foes. Though the Lady Vols possess a dominant 37-6 advantage in the overall series, the last two years have brought a more competitive matchup as UT edges Vandy only 3-2 in the past five meetings. Vanderbilt and Tennessee met in the SEC s tournament finals twice with UT winning in 1994 and VU triumphing in 1995. Overall, UT is 5-2 in postseason meetings with Vanderbilt, all in the SEC Tournament. There will be some discrepancy in the game notes as to the records for UT and Vandy in the all-time series. The Lady Vols records show that the first game between the two teams was played on Jan. 18, 1976, in Nashville. Tennessee won the contest, 96-27. UT VS. No other team has recorded as many games with the Lady Vols since UT played Old Dominion home-and-home and in the postseason (practically every year) in the late 1970s and early 80s. After reeling off 14 consecutive wins over Vanderbilt from Jan. 19, 1996, until Feb. 22, 2001, Tennessee dropped two straight to the in-state SEC rivals. Vanderbilt picked up a win in the conference tourney in Memphis last season, 77-74, and followed that with a 76-59 trouncing of the Lady Vols in Nashville on Feb. 2, 2002. UT returned to its winning ways two weeks later, dealing Vandy a 75-68 loss in Knoxville. TOP 25 OPPONENTS Once again, Tennessee has played a schedule laden with ranked teams. With a slate that has been rated the toughest in the country, the Lady Vols are 14-3 against Top 25 opponents, including a 6-2 mark against Top-10 teams. Vanderbilt has faced 11 ranked opponents, boasting a 6-5 record. The Commodores played to a 1-2 mark over Top-10 teams TENNESSEE VS. Foster enters the Midwest Regional with a 503-224 overall record. He is 255-98 at Vanderbilt, and in 13 years at the helm of St. Joseph s program, Foster amassed a 248-126 record. SUCCESSFUL APPRENTICESHIP: Vanderbilt head coach Jim Foster has seen four former assistants find success as head coaches in their own right. Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw steered her Fighting Irish to a national championship a year ago. ND advanced to the second round of the 2002 Midwest Region before falling to Tennessee in Knoxville. Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma has led his Huskies to a perfect 35-0 mark and the No. 1 ranking throughout the season. Deb Patterson has led Kansas State to a Top-20 ranking and a #3 seed in the Mideast Region. Cindy Anderson has taken over the clipboard at Foster s old stomping ground, St. Joseph s. The Hawks went 23-7 overall and played in the WNIT. SHARP SHOOTERS: Vanderbilt leads the nation in field goal percentage, hitting 53 percent of its shots. Through March 11, the Commodores had hit 897 of their 1,705 attempts. Early this season Vandy notched an above average 55 percent shooting performance against the Lady Vols on Feb. 2. The Lady Vols are currently rated No. 25 in the same stat category. AN EXCLUSIVE CLUB: VU senior Jillian Danker became the 21st member of the 1,000-point club, joining teammates Chantelle Anderson and Zuzi Kimesova on the list on Jan. 17. FRIENDS OR FOES?: Lady Vol Michelle Snow and Commodore Chantelle Anderson have more in common than their height and position on the court. The two share a friendship off the court. That bond has been tested in the past two years, as the pair has become rivals on the court. On Jan. 23, 2001, Snow dunked in Memorial Gym in the waning seconds of UT s 70-64 victory. A year later Anderson was quoted as saying that Snow would not dunk on her team if she were in the game at the time, even if it meant fouling her. Anderson s prophecy held true on Feb. 16, 2002, when Snow broke free and looked as if she might try another jam. Anderson fouled her friend before she had a chance. A BIG DRAW: The Vanderbilt/Tennessee matchup on Feb. 2 marked the third sellout in Memorial Gym for a women s basketball game. The contest officially sold out three days prior to game day. Over 14,000 fans watched the Commodores defeat the Lady Vols, 76-59. The first sellout was Jan. 30, 1993, when #1 Vanderbilt hosted #2 Tennessee. The game was declared a sellout 16 days in advance of the tilt. The other sellout was Feb. 7, 1999. Nine of the Top 10 Memorial Gym crowds have come against Tennessee. ANDERSON S HAUL: The Commodores Chantelle Anderson should be making room on her mantel for this year s round of awards and honors. Already, the 6-6 center has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. Additionally, she is a Naismith Finalist and an AP All-American. Anderson leads Vanderbilt by averaging 20.2 points per game. In eight jousts against the Lady Vols, the junior has averaged 18 points per game. PULLING RANK: Typically, going into the Tennessee versus Vanderbilt match-up, the Lady Vols have entered the contest as the higher ranked team. In fact, in the last 20 meetings dating back to Jan. 30, 1993, the Commodores have been ranked higher just three times. Going into that memorable oversold game on the Nashville campus in 1993, Vanderbilt was ranked number one while the Lady Vols were a step behind at No. 2. Since that time, UT has been ranked

considerably higher than Vandy in each of the teams meetings. This year however, Vanderbilt was a perennial Top-10 team and is currently ranked ahead of the Lady Vols as the top seed in the Midwest Region.
