Learning Places Spring 2017 SITE REPORT #2 Vinegar Hill and DUMBO

STUDENT NAME Jimmy Fienco INTRODUCTION This site report is on the differences between Vinegar Hill and Dumbo. I ll be explaining what I saw during my recent trip to Vinegar Hill and Dumbo. PRE-VISIT REFLECTION Before our visit to Dumbo. As a class, we visited Vinegar Hill and discovered different areas of Vinegar Hill such as the Navy Yard. Also, the people who live in Vinegar Hill and the community. My group and I went to Dumbo to investigate. We noticed some differences between the two historical sites. I ll be explaining some of the differences of the two sites and provide some pictures, and sketches. SITE DOCUMENTATION I: MAP OF AREA OF INVESTIGATION -- ON THE MAP CHART YOUR ROUTE AND MARK THE FOLLOWING: (a) significant stops; (b) Locations and directions of photos and sketches 1

We started at John and Jay St. We walked along the Oceanside and end it at Main Street Park. We encountered an Environmental Education Center during our walk. Also, we were able to go under the Manhattan Bridge. 2

SITE DOCUMENTATION II: photos/sketches for 2-3 significant stops. Provide captions and explanations why is the image shown significant for your topic of exploration I want to talk about how Dumbo is more advertised than Vinegar Hill. I ll explain here. 6

Here, we see a huge sign that says Dumbo. Behind this sign, you see a beautiful view of the Manhattan Bridge and Manhattan itself in the background. Tourist coming here would enjoy what they see here. 7

There are two different colors for street signs which are green and brown. Brown meaning it s a part of historic district. If I was walking and without this street sign indicating this is Vinegar Hill Historic District, I wouldn t have known this was Vinegar Hill unless I was using a map. SITE OBSERVATIONS: Note conditions you found and explain how they relate to the topic of your investigation 1. I noticed that Dumbo is being renovated more than Vinegar Hill isn t. For example. 8

9

2. Looking at this area, I ve noticed around the area that there were plenty of people walking their dogs. I think they should make this into a dog park and this would be beneficial for people that live nearby and have to walk so for far. 3. While walking in the heart of Vinegar Hill, I encountered a restaurant called Vinegar Hill House. I couldn t talk to the manager because he wasn t available but I did talk to a waiter. I asked, how long has the restaurant been here. He told me 20 years. I also asked, how many people come eat here. He told me plenty especially on the weekends. 10

4. Another thing I noticed was the difference of views. People who walk around Dumbo they see the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. While in Vinegar Hill, people see unused areas and a Power Plant blocking the view to see the other side of Manhattan. 5. While walking with my group in Dumbo, we noticed someone doing a photo shoot. 6. Discovered an Environmental Education Center QUANTITATIVE DATA: under subject list the topic; Under data describe your findings and the quantity found Subject NYC Transit System CrossFit Dumbo (Gym) Data I located one Transit System under the Manhattan Bridge. It s location is on York St and Pearl St Found one gym in Dumbo on Pearl St and PlymouthSt 11

Design Shop Walked by a design shop on Water St and Hudson St QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESIS Consider the data found during your site visit and review the material you included so far in this report. QUESTIONS: 1. Why do people prefer to be in Dumbo more, rather than Vinegar Hill? 2. Why is there more construction going on in Dumbo than Vinegar Hill? 3. Is Con-Edison using parts of Vinegar Hill to park their cars? HYPOTHESIS: From the question you wrote above - select the most important question for your own research. Propose an explanation made on the basis of the limited evidence you have so far as a starting point for further investigation 1. I believe that people prefer to be in Dumbo than Vinegar Hill is because Dumbo is more modern to capture the attention of tourist and see the wonderful view of Manhattan from Brooklyn. Not trying to put down Vinegar Hill but you can t see much because of the Power Plant in the way. 2. I think why there isn t much construction in Vinegar Hill is, everyone lives nearby. If anyone would construct something in Vinegar Hill it would disturb the entire community. 3. As I was walking in Vinegar Hill, I noticed that Con-Edison has this space to park their cars rather than in the street. SUMMARY / POST VISIT REFLECTION / NEXT STEP? I enjoyed this doing this project. I got to learn about two different sites that I never been to. I like both sites so I ll be walking around there during my free time. My next step would be to check back in a few months and record any changes. Also, I ll try the Vinegar Hill House restaurant. PRELIMINARY REFERENCES TO EXPLORE HYPOTHESES: List articles, websites, public or government documents, or other information resources you have found that might help you explore your hypothesis. Try to find a variety of sources; 2 newspaper articles, 2 magazine articles, 2 websites, 2 public documents, etc. 12
