ALPHA ZERO ASSEMBLY Step 1: Attach Handle Bar to Stem Alpha Zero Recommended for ages 1½ to 4 years. Adult assembly required. Using the supplied 5mm hex key, unscrew the four bolts holding the stem face plate to the stem and remove the stem face plate. Position the handlebars on the stem. Center the handlebars. Make sure the cables are on the front of the bike as illustrated. Reattach the stem face plate with the four bolts. Use the supplied 5MM wrench to tighten firmly (6NM of torque). NOTE: Tighten the bolts in an X pattern as illustrated. As you tighten, pay attention to the gap between the stem and stem face plate. The gap on the top should be even with the gap on the bottom. 6

ALPHA ZERO ASSEMBLY Step 2: Adjust Seat Height Release the seat tube quick release by pulling the lever to the right side of the bike. Adjust the seat height. For balance bike fit, Prevelo recommends the seat height be adjusted so, while seated in the saddle, the rider can get both feet flat on the ground with a slight bend in the knee. Close the quick release lever completely. NOTE: If the seat post clamp is either too tight or too loose, adjust tightness using the bolt on the left side of the clamp. 7

ALPHA ONE AND ALPHA TWO ASSEMBLY Step 1: Attach Handle Bar to Stem Using the supplied 5mm hex key, unscrew the four bolts holding the stem face plate to the stem and remove the stem face plate. 8

ALPHA ONE AND ALPHA TWO ASSEMBLY Step 2: Attach Pedals Screw the pedals into the pedal holes in the crank arms and tighten with the supplied 15mm wrench. NOTE: The pedals come labeled with R and L stickers to indicate right and left. The left pedal is reverse threaded and must be turned counterclockwise to tighten. 9

ALPHA ONE AND ALPHA TWO ASSEMBLY Step 3: Adjust Seat Height Release the seat tube quick release by pulling the lever to the right side of the bike. Adjust the seat height. For advice on seat height, please see the fit guide on page 23. Close the quick release lever completely. NOTE: If the seat post clamp is either too tight or too loose, adjust tightness using the bolt on the left side of the clamp. 10

11

ALPHA THREE AND ALPHA FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 1: Attach Handle Bar to Stem Using the supplied 5mm hex key, unscrew the four bolts holding the stem face plate to the stem and remove the stem face plate. Position the handlebars on the stem. Center the handlebars. Make sure the cables are on the front of the bike as illustrated. Reattach the stem face plate with the four bolts. Use the supplied 4MM wrench to tighten firmly (observe torque labeled on stem). NOTE: Tighten the bolts in an X pattern as illustrated. As you tighten, pay attention to the gap between the stem and stem face plate. The gap on the top should be even with the gap on the bottom. 12

ALPHA THREE AND ALPHA FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 2: Attach Front Wheel Locate the quick release assembly. Remove the nut and one of the springs. Find the arrow indicating direction of rotation on the front tire. Lay the wheel on a flat surface so that the arrow indicates a counter-clockwise rotation. Insert the quick release skewer through the hub. Put the spring and nut on the opposite side of the hub. Keep the entire assembly loose for now. Disengage the front brake calipers. 13

ALPHA THREE AND ALPHA FOUR ASSEMBLY FULLY insert the wheel assembly into the dropouts at the bottom of the front fork. The quick release handle should be on the left side of the bike (from the rider s perspective). Tighten by turning the nut on the right side of the skewer until slightly snug. IMPORTANT: Make sure that (1) both sides of the front axle are fully inserted into the front dropouts and (2) the nut on the right side and the quick release washer on the left side are FULLY SEATED inside the raised lips on the dropouts. Tighten the quick release lever completely by pushing it up towards the fork. If the quick release lever feels too tight or too loose, adjust using the nut on the right side of the axle. Reattached the front brake caliper. 14

ALPHA THREE AND ALPHA FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 3: Attach Pedals Screw the pedals into the pedal holes in the crank arms and tighten with the supplied 15mm wrench. NOTE: The pedals come labeled with R and L stickers to indicate right and left. The left pedal is reverse threaded and must be turned counterclockwise to tighten. 15

ALPHA THREE AND ALPHA FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 4: Adjust Seat Height Release the seat tube quick release by pulling the lever to the right side of the bike. Adjust the seat height. For advice on seat height, please see the fit guide on page 23. Close the quick release lever completely. NOTE: If the seat post clamp is either too tight or too loose, adjust tightness using the bolt on the left side of the clamp. 16

17

ZULU THREE AND ZULU FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 1: Attach Handle Bar to Stem Using the supplied 5mm hex key, unscrew the four bolts holding the stem face plate to the stem and remove the stem face plate. 18

ZULU THREE AND ZULU FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 2: Attach Front Wheel Locate the quick release assembly. If this is the first time installing the wheel on the bike, the brake pads will have a black plastic spacer between them. Remove the black spacer. After the spacer is removed, do not pull the front brake lever until the wheel is installed. If the front brake lever is pulled without a spacer or wheel in place the brake pads can squeeze together and will need to be separated again before the wheel can be installed. 19

ZULU THREE AND ZULU FOUR ASSEMBLY FULLY insert the wheel assembly into the dropouts at the bottom of the front fork. The quick release handle should be on the left side of the bike (from the rider s perspective). Make sure that the brake rotor slides between the brake pads. If the brake pads are compressed too close together, gently push them apart using a credit card, flat head screw driver or a butter knife (But don t use a sharp knife!) Tighten by turning the nut on the right side of the skewer until slightly snug. 20

ZULU THREE AND ZULU FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 3: Attach Pedals Screw the pedals into the pedal holes in the crank arms and tighten with the supplied 8MM allen wrench. Step 1: Loosely thread the pedals into the pedal holes in the crank arms. The pedals come labeled with R and L stickers to indicate right and left. The left pedal is reverse threaded and must be turned counterclockwise to tighten. Step 2: Tighten the pedals by inserting the allen wrench into the pedal axle from the side of the crank arm facing inwards towards the bike. From this side you must turn the right pedal counterclockwise to tighten and turn the left pedal clockwise to tighten. 21

ZULU THREE AND ZULU FOUR ASSEMBLY Step 4: Adjust Seat Height Release the seat tube quick release by pulling the lever to the right side of the bike. Adjust the seat height. For advice on seat height, please see the fit guide on page 23. Close the quick release lever completely. NOTE: If the seat post clamp is either too tight or too loose, adjust tightness using the bolt on the left side of the clamp. 22

BIKE FIT LEARNER FIT: This fit is for riders who are new to riding. Typically, a child s first bike will be fitted like this. Fit: both heels are on the ground while seated in the saddle. PEDALER FIT: This fit is for riders who are comfortable pedaling. Typically, a child s second bike will be fitted like this. Fit: rider is on tip toes of both feet while seated in the saddle (toes of both feet can touch the ground). 23

PRE-RIDE CHECK Before each and every ride, be sure to check the following for the rider: Make sure all bicycle components are tightened and free of debris. Check air pressure in both tires (see page 31.) Make sure the axle bolts/nuts or quick release fittings on the wheels are tight and properly secured. Make sure the saddle is properly positioned. Consult our bike fit guide on page 23. Make sure the brakes are working. Rider should be able to operate the brakes easily while seated. Make sure the rider understands how to use the brakes. All Prevelo pedal bikes have front and rear handbrakes. The Alpha Zero has only a rear hand brake. The Alpha One has an additional coaster (pedal) brake. Ask the rider to demonstrate the ability to brake by starting and stopping several times in a safe location. Make sure the rider s helmet is secured properly (see page 25). 24

BASIC SAFETY Riding a bike is fun! However, like any sport, bicycling involves risk of injury. By choosing to ride a bicycle, or to put your child on a bicycle, you assume the responsibility for that risk, so you need to know and to practice the rules of safe and responsible riding and of proper use and maintenance. Proper use and maintenance of your bicycle reduces risk of injury. We highly recommend adult supervision in the early stages of learning to ride, especially in order to teach proper use and safety. Because it is impossible to anticipate every situation or condition which can occur while riding, this manual makes no representation about the safe use of the bicycle under all conditions. There are risks associated with the use of any bicycle which cannot be predicted or avoided, and which are the sole responsibility of the rider. HELMETS. Your child must wear a helmet while riding a bike. Make sure to get a helmet that fits properly and meets the latest Snell, ANSI or CPSC standard for helmets. The helmet should fit snuggly and sit squarely on the head, sitting low (one or two finger widths above the eyebrow), not tilted back. Straps should be securely fastened under the chin (see your helmet owners manual). Make sure your child understands that a bicycle helmet is only for riding bicycles. A bicycle helmet should not be worn while playing, in play areas, on playground equipment, while climbing trees, or at any time while not riding a bicycle. CLOTHING. Your child should wear appropriate clothing while riding a bike. Bright visible colors can help make your child more visible to drivers. Avoid loose fitting long pants/skirts that may get caught in moving components. Non-slip shoes are recommended and never ride barefoot. Safety padding should not impede mobility. ROAD CONDITIONS Wet Weather: Impairs traction, visibility and braking. Ensure that your child understands that the road can be slippery. Riding in wet weather, if necessary, should be done at a slower speed and additional time should be allotted for braking. Apply the brakes earlier and more gradually during these conditions. Nighttime: Reflectors as well as front and rear lights are necessary to make your child 25

BASIC SAFETY visible to drivers. Traffic: Instruct your child to exercise the highest level of awareness of his/her surroundings. It is important to never assume that a car driver sees a bicycle rider. LIGHTS AND REFLECTORS. Reflectors are designed to pick-up and reflect street lights and car lights in a way that makes the bicycle more visible to others. Check the reflectors to make sure they are clean, straight, unbroken and securely mounted. Riding without reflectors may reduce visibility to others. Reflectors are not a substitute for lights. If your child rides at night, the bicycle must be equipped with lights. WARNING: Riding after dusk without lights and reflectors is extremely dangerous. Certain ordinances require lights and reflectors for night riding. Check your local laws. EYE PROTECTION. Any kind of riding, but particularly off-road riding, involves airborne bugs, dirt and other particles. Protective eyewear is recommended. RIDING SAFETY RULES of the ROAD. Children should be instructed on the rules of the road and appropriate behavior and safety on streets. Obey the rules of the road and all local traffic laws. In many areas children can legally ride on sidewalks (check your local laws). Depending on pedestrian traffic on sidewalks and the skill level of the child, sidewalks may be the safest place to ride. Ride defensively. look ahead, be ready for anything. Watch for parked car doors, pedestrians, children playing, pot holes, sewer grates, railroad tracks, debris etc. and assume that others, particularly motorists, do not see you. Bicycles share the roads with motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists. Respect their rights. If bicycle lanes are available, ride in designated bicycle lanes. Ride as close to the edge of the road as possible and in the direction of traffic flow or as directed by local laws. Stop at stop signs and obey traffic lights. Looks both ways before crossing intersections. 26

BASIC SAFETY Never ride with headphones. It is important for the rider to be able to hear the environment around the rider (other cars, sirens). Loose wires from headphones, or any other device, can become wrapped in moving parts of the bicycle and present a hazard. Never carry a passenger. Prevelo bicycles are not designed to accommodate child carriers. Do not carry anything which obstructs your vision or your complete control of the bicycle, or which could become tangled or otherwise interfere with moving parts on the bicycle. Never hold onto a moving vehicle. Don t weave through traffic. Ride predictably. Do not do stunts, wheelies, jumps or other advanced maneuvers. Parents and children should think carefully before deciding to take the large risks that go with this kind of riding. If possible, avoid riding in bad weather, when visibility is obscured, at dawn, dusk or in the dark, or when extremely tired. Each of these conditions increases the risk of accident. MOVING PARTS. Bicycles have moving parts that children need to be instructed not to touch while moving. Wheel spokes, tires, chain, gears and other moving parts can cause serious injury if touched while in motion. This hazard exists anytime the gears, pedals or wheels are spinning or could spin, even if the bicycle is not in motion (for example, if the wheels are spun when the bicycle is on a rack). 27

USE AND DESIGN Prevelo Bikes have been specifically engineered for children, not adults. Be sure to reference our online sizing guide to ensure a proper fit. Prevelo Bikes are designed to be ridden on roads, paved or unpaved, as well as smooth trails. Prevelo Bikes are NOT designed for extreme riding including, but not limited to, jumping, downhill or freeriding. Normal wear and tear from proper use is to be expected. To keep your Prevelo Bike in great shape, refer to the section on Maintenance and Care on page 29. ANATOMY OF A BIKE 28

MAINTENANCE & CARE FRAME. Prevelo frames are hand crafted from 6061 Aluminum Alloy requiring only minimal care. Wash using a soft sponge, diluted dishwashing soap and a bucket of warm water. Note: If using a hose, choose a gentle spray as opposed to a harsh jet. Dry with a clean cloth. DRIVETRAIN To Clean: Use a soft-bristled brush to clean away any dirt or debris from the chain, derailleur and cassette. Spray bicycle chain cleaner/degreaser onto the chain, derailleur and cassette. Using a rag, wipe clean while turning the crank. Dry with a clean cloth. To Lubricate: Chain: Using only a bicycle chain lubricant, apply a drop to each link. Turn the crank a few times to allow the lubricant to settle. Use a dry rag to remove any excess lubricant. Derailleur: Using only a bicycle chain lubricant, apply a few drops onto the pullies only. Use a dry rag to remove any excess lubricant. BRAKES Alpha Zero Brake: The Alpha Zero is equipped with a rear V-Brake controlled by a hand brake lever. An adult should perform regular checks on the operation and condition of the brakes to ensure safety. Check both brake pads to ensure they have not worn down past the wear lines. Replace both pads at the same time. Check for proper brake pad alignment. The pads should contact the rim without contacting the tire. Do not allow the brake pads to come into contact with oil or lubricant. 29

MAINTENANCE & CARE Alpha One, Alpha Two, Alpha Three and Alpha Four Brakes: The Alpha One, Alpha Two, Alpha Three and Alpha Four are equipped with front and rear V-Brakes controlled by two hand brake levers. An adult should perform regular checks on the operation and condition of the brakes to ensure safety. Check all brake pads to ensure they have not worn down past the wear lines. Replace all the pads at the same time. Check for proper brake pad alignment. The pads should contact the rim without contacting the tire. Do not allow the brake pads to come into contact with oil or lubricant. Zulu Three and Zulu Four Brakes: The Zulu Three and Zulu Four are equipped with front and rear hydraulic disc brakes controlled by two hand brake levers. An adult should perform regular checks on the operation and condition of the brakes to ensure safety. Check each brake assembly: Proper alignment: the rotor should be centered in between the brake pads. Full contact. Upon engaging the brake, each brake pad should make full contact with the rotor. Riding with improperly adjusted brakes, worn brake pads, or wheels on which the rim wear mark is visible is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. All bolts on the brake assembly should be snug. Check each brake lever and all hydraulic hoses to make sure there is no brake fluid leaking. Check the rotors: Each rotor should be clean and free of debris. Each rotor should be straight and not bent. All bolts should be snug so that each rotor is firmly attached to the wheel. Note: Never squeeze the brake lever with the wheel removed. The brake pads may stick together. If the pads get stuck together, very gently use a clean pad spreader tool to separate the pads before replacing the wheel. If you have any concerns regarding improper brake alignment, fluid leaks, function or wear arise, please call (805) 557-8300, visit prevelobikes.com or visit your local bike shop. 30

MAINTENANCE & CARE TIRES Regularly check that air pressure matches the recommended PSI as labeled on the sidewall of the tire. Regularly inspect both tires for cracks, cuts, deterioration or uneven wear. Compromised tires should be replaced immediately. AIR FORKS (Zulu Three and Zulu Four) Air/pressure: The weight/pressure chart is located on one of the fork legs. If you need to check or adjust the fork pressure, you must use a shock pump available from bike stores or online. Rebound: Extreme rebound settings on your forks can adversely affect the handling of your bike. If you have any questions about this please call (805) 557-8300, visit prevelobikes.com/support or visit your local bike shop. WHEEL QUICK RELEASE SYSTEM WARNING: Riding with an improperly adjusted wheel quick release can allow the wheel to wobble or disengage from the bicycle, causing damage to the bicycle and serious injury to the rider. Therefore it is IMPORTANT that you: Understand and apply the correct technique for clamping your wheel in place using the wheel quick release. Make sure that the quick release skewer nuts are positioned inside of the tabs at the bottom of the fork dropout. Make sure the quick release is securely closed before riding. Each time you ride your bike, check that the wheel is securely clamped. Refer to illustrations on pages 14 and 20. Call (805) 557-8300, visit prevelobikes.com/support or visit your local bike shop to help if you are unsure of how to properly install or remove the wheels. 31
