Trainers Corner with Lyle Jackson Q: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the Reining industry over the next few years? Members, show committees and the associations have to take a leading role in addressing the animal welfare issue. Everyone is under scrutiny in this age of social media with everyone having a video camera in their pocket. It makes the evening news when someone is videoed slapping a dog with a brush, criminal charges are laid and the population is outraged. Our problem is that people outside of our industry have no understanding of what normal training methods are or what it takes to control a 1000 lb animal. They look at horses as pets. The reining industry needs to demonstrate that we are actively policing ourselves. We need to show that we have rules and procedures in place to protect the horses from physical and drug abuse. In many places in the United States and Europe the Issue: February 2013 government is stepping in with rules and regulations that impact our industry. The reiners should be the ones creating the rules so that the welfare objectives are met while still preserving the sport. We do not want to be regulated from the outside, but it is coming. We also need to be united on the issue and the solutions. The NRHA has evolved into the best place to show a reining horse because our earnings are tracked. It keeps the playing field level so that people compete against others of equal experience, and horses are given appropriate recognition for their winnings. This establishes the value of the horses, and supports the fair marketing of the industry. It would be sad if we took a step back and different interest groups pulled out of the NRHA system because of a lack of agreement on animal welfare rules. Lyle has coached and trained for almost all western disciplines, specializing in reining. He also holds many Judges cards, including his NRHA, AQHA, APHA, NRCHA & FEI Reining (I). He has also sat on numerous reining committees with NRHA and Reining Canada. Currently sits as Vice Chair on the NRHA Animal Welfare Stewards Committee.
