The Tigers face their third SEC matchup in as many games, when they meet the Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday. Tipoff at Gateway Christian Academy is set for 3 p.m. EST and the game will be broadcast on FloHoops. Clemson and Tennessee have met 12 times in program history with the series heavily favoring the Volunteers 11-1. The Tigers only win over Tennessee came in 1981 when Clemson downed the then seventh-ranked Volunteers, 72-64, at home. Clemson would finish that season the ACC Regular Season Champions and ranked 20th overall in the nation. In neutral site contests, the Volunteers hold a 4-0 edge over Clemson, including two regular season neutral site wins. Despite the tumultuous record against Tennessee, Coach Butler has been victorious over the Vols, coming out on top twice during her tenure at Florida. last time out Clemson squared-off with Alabama in its second road game of the season on Monday, coming up short 56-76 in the ACC/SEC matchup. The Tigers sit at.500 on the season after dropping the game to the Crimson Tide. As a team, Clemson outrebounded Alabama 46-37 throughout the game. The Tigers were particularly impressive in regards to offensive rebounds, tallying 22 as a team, compared to the Tide s eight. Senior Aliyah Collier paced Clemson with her first double-digit (10) rebounding effort of the season. Sophomore Tylar Bennett led the offensive charge for the Tigers, posting a career performance with a career-best 15 points in 35 minutes of action. Bennett s 15 points marked the first ever double-digit outing for the sophomore who shot 7-of-16 from the field. tiger leaders scouting the volunteers A perennial postseason contender, Tennessee came in at No. 11 in this week s polls. The Volunteers finished the 2017-18 season with a 25-8 record after exiting the NCAA Tournament in the second round. Tennessee enters Thursday s contest undefeated, having taken down all three opponents faced thus far in the 20 season. Most recently, the Volunteers hosted Florida A&M, dominating the Rattlers 96-31. Clemson will be the first Power Five opponent that Tennessee has faced this season. The Volunteers have put on three explosive outings on offense, defeating their opponents by an average of 46.7 points. Five Tennessee players are averaging double-digit outings, led by senior Meme Jackson who is recording 14.3 points per game. Despite being a first-time participant in the Junkanoo Jam, Clemson is no stranger to games in the Bahamas having played in the Bahamas Shootout (Nassau) on three separate occasions in program history. The 1997 game against Temple was the first ever Clemson women s basketball game played outside the United States. The Tigers hold a 4-2 overall record in games played in the Bahamas, the most recent outing occurring in 2010 when Clemson faced off with Baylor and Syracuse in Nassau. That record falls to 4-5 in games played outside the United States as the Tigers went 0-3 in the Paradise Jam (U.S. Virgin Islands) in 2014. Clemson is a two-time champion of the Bahamas Shootout, posting a pair of 2-0 trips in both 1997 and 2002. Natasha Anderson and Chrissy Floyd were named Bahamas Shootout most valuable players in 1997 and 2002, respectively. neutral site contests The Tigers have found success when playing neutral site games, holding a 109-93 all-time record in contests played at an impartial site. In regular season neutral site contests, Clemson is 67-44, with the most recent victory coming on Nov. 25, 2016 against Wright State, a 75-51 win in Daytona Beach, Florida. Clemson has played 19 neutral site games against foes from the Southeastern Conference, posting a 6-13 marking in those 19 outings. Four of those 13 losses came in postseason action for the Tigers. Clemson is 0-2 all-time in regular season neutral site games against Tennessee. rebounds for days The Tigers have excelled on the glass this season, outrebounding opponents by an average of 8.5 rebounds per game. If that 8.5 mark were to hold throughout the season, it would tie the Clemson single-season record for rebounding margin, previously set during the 1976-77 season. Clemson is averaging 46.8 rebounds per game so far this season, good for third in the ACC (27th in the nation) in rebounding offense. That 46.8 number currently ranks fourth in Clemson single-season records for rebounding average. Junior Kobi Thornton paces the Tigers averaging 8.0 rebounds per game. She ranks tied for second in the ACC for offensive rebounds with 16 (4.0/game), followed closely behind by fellow Tiger Aliyah Collier who has 15 offensive boards. non-conference warriors Clemson posted a 10-3 record in non-conference action a season ago, including a season-long five-game win streak from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. The Tigers held their non-conference foes to under 60 points in eight of the 13 games, including a season-low 28 points by Kennesaw State. All-time, the Tigers hold a 430-223 record in regular season non-conference action. Clemson is particularly strong in non-conference games at home, posting a 251-61 record when playing in front of the home crowd. The Tigers have squared of with opponents from the Southeastern Conference since their first year in action, posting a 53-73 mark over the past 44 seasons. 3 THE POLLS Associated Press Rk. Clemson adds a much-needed 3-point shooter in UT-Martin transfer Kendall Spray, although the guard will have to sit out the 20 season due to transfer rules. From Florida, Clemson acquired post play Mikayla Hayes and graduate transfer Simone Westbrook. Hayes, who was originally recruited by Coach Butler, played one season at Florida before coming to Clemson to learn under Butler. Westbrook is the only current Tiger to have ever played for Coach Butler, suiting up at Florida from 2014-16. Three freshmen join the Clemson squad, two forwards in Taylor Hosendove and Skylar Blackstock, and a guard in Camreé Clegg. All three provide depth on the bench for the Tigers. returning stars The Tigers return two of their five starters, including leading point scorer Kobi Thornton and veteran senior Danielle Edwards. Thornton led the team in rebounds (209) and blocks (51), while Edwards created opportunities on the defensive end, averaging 2.6 steals per game. Upperclassmen Aliyah Collier, Keniece Purvis and Chyna Cotton provide depth at the guard position. Collier, who battled an injury last season, has shown an ability to get to basket and make plays. Purvis is an alternative at the point, while Cotton primarily plays at the wings. One of the most improved players from a season ago is Tylar Bennett, who showed vast growth during the summer months. The sophomore totaled 85 rebounds in 29 games a season ago. Along with shooting guard Destiny Thomas, Clemson returns much of its attack from 2017-18. go until you re stopped Coach Butler has introduced a new offensive mentality to the Clemson program, instilling a go until you re stopped mentality in the team, whether that be a basket, a foul or a whistle. Butler emphasizes an aggressive style of play on both offense and defense. The up-tempo offense the Tigers will run the season utilizes the entire length of the court and allows the team to capitalize on fast break opportunities. Making plays in transition will be vital to a Clemson offense that would like to set an early tone of quick play. tough slate Clemson is in for a grueling schedule this season as the Tigers faceoff with eight top 25 teams (preseason AP) in 20. The highlights of the slate includes reigning National Champion, Notre Dame, along with five other top-25 ACC teams. The Tigers square-off with 11 tournament teams from a season ago, three in non-conference action and eight following the new year when the team picks up ACC play. Over Thanksgiving, Clemson is headed to Bimini, Bahamas to participate in the Junkanoo Jam. The field is stacked as the Tigers go up against perennial favorite Tennessee in the first round, before facing either Oklahoma or UAB, both of whom made postseason appearances. record watch Rk. Time with the Gators Most recently, Butler spent 10 seasons at the head of the Florida Gators women s basketball program, posting a 190-137 record in that span with eight postseason berths. She averaged 19.0 wins per season in her 10 years at Florida and was responsible for six of the program s 15 total 20-win seasons. Under her direction, the 2008-09 squad (24-8) cracked the top-25 in the national polls for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Butler coached the team to a program-best 15-game winning streak and won a program-record seven consecutive games against SEC teams. Butler s mentorship led to 10 All-SEC selections and eight All-SEC Freshman Team honorees during her 10 years at Florida. In May of 2001, Butler took her talents to the state of North Carolina, joining the Charlotte women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. In her second year with the program, the 49ers captured the 2003 Conference-USA regular-season title and earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Butler earned a promotion to associate head coach following the 2002-03 season and continued her success in recruiting, bringing to Charlotte four All-Atlantic 10 selections, four Conference USA All-Freshman team members and one All-Conference USA honoree. The following season, Butler received the nod as head coach of the 49ers. The Early Days A native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Butler enjoyed a stellar prep career at Mt. Juliet High School, where she tallied over 1,400 points. Butler went on to a standout playing career at the University of Florida.
