WINTERSAFARI IN THE COBALT MINES an underground adventure blaa.no
In 1772 there was discovered cobalt ore in the hills of Skuterud. This laid the foundation for Blaafarveværket (the Cobalt Works) and an industrial adventure that would last 120 years. Today the Cobalt Works and Mines are one of Norway s most visited museums. We would like to take you on an underground mine safari where you will get the whole fascinating history of the Cobalt mines, its German owners and their engineers. Our guides speak: Facts about the safari: Duration: Up to 3 hours, lunch included Lengde: 1,5 km Height difference:: 80 metres Age limit: 10 years Physics and clothing: The participants must have normal physic and general normal health and be able to climb ladders and stairs. The temperature inside the Cobalt mines is constant at 4-6 C. All participants will be fitted with fleece capes and helmet. Good shoes are a necessity
Join us underground and see how the old techniques with fire-setting from the 18th century meets the air pressure drills from the 19th century. We take a walk through the crystal cave before we start climbing the ladders and stairs up to the huge underground halls. Here you will experience a unique mine network with beautiful rock formations, deep shafts and an exciting history on the way up to Clara adit where the Cheese-tunnel and exciting attractions await.
Another highlight of the safari is the floating glass floor in Edvard Shaft. Here you can step out in the middle of the shaft and look straight down on the shafts original wooden floor 20 meters below you. We cross the newest attraction in the Cobalt mines, the 32-metre-long suspension bridge, in Glück Auf Strosse (drive = mountain hall). The bridge hangs in the middle of the drive where the cobalt ore once was. The suspension bridge is spectacular lit, so you can experience an authentic part of the Cobalt mines that was not previously visible.
After we have crossed the suspension bridge there is possibility to sample our mine-ripened cheese and / or lunch. Bergknappen is our underground serving place. See last page for details. After lunch you get a quick introduction to the chemical processes needed to get the beautiful cobalt blue colour out of the gray ore. Then we follow Clara adit out of the mountain and finishes the trip with great views of Lake Tyrifjorden and the Vikersund ski jump arena, which is the world s largest of its kind. Did you know......... in 2017 we won silver medal in the German travel magazine NORDIS Travel Award with our guided tours of the Cobalt mines?
