West Vancouver Field Hockey Club The home of North Shore Field Hockey Presentation to District of North Vancouver - 19 March 2018 1

Who are we? Field Hockey is a north shore tradition starting in the 1960s. North Vancouver West Vancouver Field Hockey Club is a not-for-profit sports organization that was founded in 1971. With around 1900 members we are the largest field hockey club in North America. We are the home of field hockey on the North Shore. Over 60% of our members come from North Vancouver. In 2011, we opened Rutledge Field, the only field hockeyspecific field on the North Shore and one of a handful across the Lower Mainland. Our programs also run on fields across North Vancouver. 2

A tradition of sporting excellence The North Shore has strong links to the Canadian Men s National Team and Women s National Team. Home of the Men s National Team who train on Rutledge Field. Currently 5 men and 4 women from the North Shore. North Shore Secondary Schools regularly win the provincial high school championships. Most secondary school players are members of WVFHC. In 2017 Handsworth won AAA BC High School Field Hockey Championships. In 2017 we hosted FIH World League 2, an international women s tournament involving Canada and 6 other countries. This brought volunteers, businesses and other stakeholders together to showcase the North Shore internationally. We won a North Shore Sport Award for Contribution to Sport & have been approached to host other international games & festivals 3

Creating opportunities for youth Our Junior Program is the largest field hockey program in BC. Last year we served over 1,600 children in Spring League, our main youth program. We offer year-round programming to all ages and abilities. We encourage our older youth to give back to the community. Players age 13+ years can train to be Umpires or Junior Coaches, becoming role models for younger teams. A significant number of our junior players are selected to represent BC and Canada. We currently have 7 girls and 7 boys in the Canadian Junior Development Squads. We support educational advancement through opportunities for our youth to consider post-secondary field hockey opportunities. From 2005-2014, over 100 girls from WVFHC have gone on to play at universities in Canada & USA. 4

Promoting sport for life & a healthy community Our programs align with the stages of the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development Plan. Our player pathways enable individuals to enter the sport at any age or ability. We work hard to keep our programs inclusive and accessible. Our fees are low in comparison with other sports. We run a Schools Program, offering free indoor field hockey sessions to elementary schools across the North Shore. Over 10 schools in North Vancouver participated this year. We work collaboratively with other North Vancouver groups to promote physical activity & healthy living at all ages: North Vancouver School District Field Hockey Academy North Shore Girls Soccer Club joint programming and promotion North Vancouver Recreation Commission physical literacy work 5

Thank you Thank you to the District of North Vancouver for your support and help with facility improvements. We use William Griffin, Sutherland, Windsor and Confederation turf fields. We are part of the North Vancouver Sports Council and work to ensure that field hockey is represented in new facilities. We hope to see you at the field soon!
