February 1, 2016 Men s Basketball Previous week: 0-1 College of the Desert men s basketball dropped a home game against Foothill foe, Victor Valley, 76-67 last Wednesday evening. Despite being down by 17 at the half, the Roadrunners battled all the way back to tie the score late in the game before coming up short. That resilient effort was led by freshman guard Gabe Solache s 18 points, along with sophomore forward Zach Waites 13 points. Freshman guard Greg Hodgdon was also in double-figures, as he netted 11 points. February 1, 2016 Women s Basketball Previous week: 0-1 College of the Desert women s basketball staked out to a huge lead in the first half, before coasting to a 73-48 win over visiting Victor Valley last Wednesday evening. Freshman guard Reina West led the Lady Roadrunners with 19 points on 8-18 (44 percent) shooting. Sophomore guard Bianca Gutierrez scored a season-high 17 points, as she knocked down five three-pointers. Freshman center Ashley Preist recorded her 10th double-oduble of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. February 1, 2016 Baseball Previous week: 1-1 College of the Desert baseball opened its 2016 on the road where they split a pair of games against Palomar and Orange Coast. In their season-opening 7-3 win over Palomar, the Roadrunners were led on offense by sophomore first baseman Dalton Bidon and freshman catcher Travis Tanaka who each collected three hits. Bidon drove in two runs, while Tanaka doubled in one himself. Sophomores Cole Danielson and Dax Roerig, along with freshman Josh Cleya, each recorded an RBI. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jumpei Akanuma (1-0)earned the win on the mound for COD, striking out one through his five innings of four-hit work. He surrendered three runs (one earned), and issued just one walk. Freshman right-hander Jake Patterson struck out four in the game s final four frames, earning him his first save. February 1 2016 Softball Previous week: 0-1 Sophomore outfielder Brianna Alcorn hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, but it wasn't enough as College of the Desert (0-1) softball fell 7-2 to visiting Imperial Valley (1-0) to open their 2016 season last week. The Lady Roadrunners trailed just 3-2 entering the sixth inning behind Alcorn's home run and an RBI single from freshman catcher Darbie Catalfamo (Shadow Hills HS). However, three runs in the top of the inning pushed Imperial Valley in front comfortably, dealing COD their first defeat. Sophomore utility Amanda Martinez and freshman outfielder Marlene Paniagua each collected one hit for the Lady Roadrunners, freshman right-hander Angelika Cabanyog (struck out one over her five innings of duty.
