Boys Varsity Basketball by Brian Hebein January 9, 2015 vs Whitefish Bay Pirates: 80 Whitefish Bay: 65 The Port Washington boy's basketball team had a tough task at home versus the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes. Over the recent years the Dukes have had the Pirates number. This Friday would prove to be a different story. The Pirates jumped out to a quick start behind some pressure defense and easy layups. The first quarter would end with the Pirates clinging to a 19-18 lead but the second quarter the guys asserted themselves and were able to take a 33-25 into halftime. The third quarter would prove to be the pivotal one as the Pirates got hot from distance and carried a 15 point lead into the final quarter. The Pirates withstood an onslaught of three point baskets from the Dukes in the fourth quarter but managed to answer every basket and shoot 25/28 from the FT line and secure the 80-65 win. Next up a showdown with undefeated Germantown and a share of first place in the North Shore Conference on Friday the 16th. Tip off is at 7:30pm in the Germantown high school gym. January 14, 2015 vs West Allis Combined The Pirate gymnasts picked up their first win of the season defeating West Allis Combined 122.1-115.0. The team was helped to victory by a personal best from Kylee Paradowski on bars, who posted a personal best by half a point. Hailey Brakke had a season best on vault. The Port girls would not have won the meet without the clutch performances on beam. The girls were the last competitors of the night on balance beam, which unsurprisingly, is the event where mistakes happen and nerves are most impactful. Boys Varsity Hockey by Ryan Donovan January 16, 2015 vs Madison East/La Follette The Ice Hawks returned to their winning ways with a dominating 6-1 victory over the visiting Madison East/La Follette Lakers this past Friday at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The Ice Hawks took control early and never looked back. First on the scoresheet was Taylor Snider (Port Washington), who finished off a 2-on- 1 pass from Jeff Wade (Grafton) after being sprung on the break by Max Manz (Grafton). With under three minutes left in the first, the Ice Hawks struck again, this time through Wade who scored off of a nice play from Nate Perez (Grafton) and Snider. It was more of the same in the second period. The Ice Hawks took a 3-0 lead, this time through Perez, who put home the puck on the backdoor off of a nice feed from Snider following a Madison turnover in the zone. The Lakers scored their only goal on a rush to make it 3-1, but the Ice Hawks added two more before the end of the period through Wade, who completed his hat trick. The flow of third period was slowed due to some penalties, but the Ice Hawks still managed to add another to their final tally. Two minutes in, Captain Bryce Fisk (Grafton) found space in the slot on the power play, slapping home a quick pass from Perez, who was setup by Wade. Goalie Izac Hickox (Grafton) had another strong game, stopping 19 of 20 shots for the victory. The Ice Hawks are now 9-5-1 on the season. The next game is Friday, January 23 at 5 PM against Beaver Dam at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
