Race 1 SPORTINGBET MAIDEN PLATE - 1107 metres: Acting on a confirmed telephone call from P. Boynton trainer of Lady Hillingdon advising that the mare had an elevated temperature, Stewards authorised the late withdrawal of the mare at 10.30 a.m. Kool Heaven which had been fractious in the mounting yard was examined behind the barriers by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race. On jumping away Just A Breeze shifted in and bumped Ed s Folly. Approaching the 800 metres Trickortrice had to be steadied when tightened for room between Ed s Folly and Zumoorooda, which was taken in by Pandora, which was shifting in. V. Duric rider of Pandora was notified to exsercise more care when shifting ground in similar situations. Kool Heaven laid in under pressure in the straight and proved difficult for its rider to ride out in his normal manner. N. Souquet rider of Kool Heaven was fined $200 under the provisions of AR145 for weighing in more than half a kilogram over his declared weight. Further to this N. Souquet was fined $200 under the provisions of AR83(a)for his misconduct after weighing in. B. Rawiller rider of Just A Breeze which finished last explained that the gelding did not travel well throughout the entire race and failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure. A post race veterinary examination of Just A Breeze revealed the gelding to have an erratic heartbeat and to be lame in the off fore leg. Just A Breeze also suffered a speedy cut to the near hind leg. Ms. G. Johnstone trainer of Just A Breeze was notified she must be in receipt of a Veterinary Certificate for the gelding including the satisfactory results of an ECG performed at rest and cardiac auscultation performed within 30 minutes of completing a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres. On return to scale J. Keating rider of Ed s Folly explained that on pulling up after the race his mount became severely unbalanced and dipped near the 1500 metres after the winning post, resulting in him nearly being dislodged. Subsequently the Stewards with a delegation of riders examined the section of the track and deemed it not suitable to race for races 4 and 8 which were over 1900 metres. It was agreed upon with the riders that on pulling up, for races 2 and 3, safety cones would be placed around the affected area. Race 2 BOOK NOW FOR TURF CUP 24 FEB BM72 HANDICAP - 1457 metres: When questioned regarding the poor performance of Kallogg, S. Hope co-trainer of the gelding advised that it was their intention to retire Kallogg. Race 3 BRIAN MANN F & M MAIDEN PLATE - 1457 metres: Prior to the running of race 2, Mr. S. Theodore trainer of Survival Miss advised it was his intention to have the filly ridden more forward today due to stepping up in distance. Survival Miss jumped well however failed to settle and approaching the 1200 metres took up a midfield position.

On jumping Jeune Dancer shifted out and bumped Katie s Princess. Approaching the 1200 metres Aroha Cat had to be steadied off the heels of First Class Manner when racing tight between that mare and Cheers For Beer. Shortly after Survival Miss had to be steadied when tightened for room between Cheers For Beer and Katie s Princess, which shifted in away from Lotus Eater. When restraining to gain cover Survival Miss had to be steadied off the heels of First Class Manner. Jeune Dancer raced wide without cover when over-racing from the 900 metres. Tycoon Porteous had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn. Approaching the 300 metres when improving, Aroha Cat shifted out and bumped Tyro Goddess, unbalancing that mare. Race 4 KILMORE TRACKSIDE MAIDEN PLATE - 1907 metres: The start of this race was delayed to 3.20 p.m. for the rail near the 1500 metres to be moved around the affected area. Riders with Stewards agreed that the remedial work in this area was safe for racing. Subsequently new race times were issued for the rest of the program (refer to other comments and explanations). The race was again slightly delayed due to That s A Given breaking through the front of the barriers. That s A Given was examined by the veterinary surgeon and deemed suitable to race. Spice Beauty was slow to begin. On jumping away Barely A Secret shifted out bumping Vittese out on to Son Of Illusion. As a result Son Of Illusion became severely unbalanced and lost ground. Near the 1500 metres Son Of Illusion had to be steadied off the heels of Vittese. Valdaine laid out rounding the home turn. In the straight Joy Of Gold laid in under pressure and near the 200 metres brushed Barely A Secret. Joy Of Gold continued to lay in under pressure for the remainder of the straight. Indexes laid in under pressure in the straight. C. Schofield rider of Spice Beauty was fined the sum of $200 when using his whip on six occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100 metres. Race 5 BULLAROOK PARK STUD 0-62 HANDICAP - 1607 metres: Mr. L. Oliver trainer of Apple Martini was fined $100 for his late notification of D. Stackhouse as the rider of the mare. Couperin jumped awkwardly and lost ground resulting in the gelding racing further back than usual.

Numen Lumen for some distance laid out shortly after the start. A post race veterinary examination of Numen Lumen revealed that the horse had abrasions to its right stifle and was found to be slightly lame in the right hind leg. In the early stages Very Suave raced ungenerously and laid out resulting in Purple Butterfly racing wide without cover. From the 1000 metres Very Suave raced wide without cover. Streiff was held up for a clear run from passing the 400 metres until upon straightening. Passing the 200 metres Streiff was disappointed for a run between Sunstroem and Very Suave, which shifted in under pressure before being straightened by its rider. N. Souquet rider of Very Suave was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future. When disappointed for a run Streiff was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of N. Souquet rider of Very Suave. Numen Lumen was held up for a clear run rounding the home turn. N. Souquet rider of Very Suave explained that he did not ride his mount out over the final four strides as he raced tight between Sunstroem and Chiquada, which shifted in slightly. Race 6 NATIONAL PATIENT TRANSPORT RISING STARS 0-68 HANDICAP - 1207 metres: Rishima commenced awkwardly. Near the 1000 metres Rishima got its head up when racing in restricted room between Wabash River and Tayla Lee, which was taken in slightly by Emerenta. Ferocia was held up for a clear run from the 400 metres until upon straightening. Near the 200 metres when weakening, Littlebitaluck was inconvenienced by Ferocia which shifted out when improving around Tale Of Two Cities. Over the concluding stages Ferocia laid out under pressure. Race 7 WELLINGTON SQUARE 0-58 HANDICAP - 1457 metres: South Street which was fractious in the mounting yard was examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and passed suitable to run. Yarra Lad and Dark Rum were slow to begin. Shinzigzag raced wide without cover in the early stages. Near the 400 metres Yarra Lad was held up for a short distance. Also near the 400 metres Never Shout Never became unbalanced when putting in an awkward stride.

Denburst was held up for a clear run rounding the home turn until passing the 200 metres. Excelsior Lad laid out under pressure rounding the home turn. When questioned as to why Shinzigzag was not ridden along in C Schofield s normal manner near the 100 metres, C. Schofield explained that the gelding laid in and proved difficult to ride. He further added that when Cash Burner improved to his outside he felt that Shinzigzag wanted to shift in and away from that runner. Stewards noted C. Schofield s comments. When questioned regarding racing in a forward position, which is contrary to its most recent runs, B. Rawiller rider of Excelsior Lad explained that the gelding jumped extremely well and as there was no early speed, he elected to take up a forward position. B. Rawiller added that he was not instructed to lead today, however to settle the gelding where comfortable from the favourable barrier. N. Blackiston confirmed these instructions. D. Thornton rider of Never Shout Never which performed poorly explained that the gelding did not feel right in its action when placed under pressure. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. D. Stackhouse rider of Madame Sleeper which finished midfield explained that the mare raced flat today. Race 8 COLTS, FILLIES & FLICKS 24 JAN 0-58 HANDICAP - 1907 metres: Medal Day was marginally slow to begin. Sophie s Tryst was held up from the 400 metres until upon straightening. Rounding the home turn shortly after passing the 400 metres Little Big Man broke down and as a result was eased out of the event. Medal Day which was following was steadied to avoid Little Big Man. Little Big Man was subsequently humanely euthanized.
