Coach Michael Jones has the task of rebuilding the program coming off the graduation of seven seniors who dot the BC All-Time record book, including alltime leading scorer Jonathan Whitson, but the pieces are in place for another run in the tournament, due to the return of key players including seniors Donald Hudson and Josh Jordan and sophomore Drew Schauss. The Volunteers are also facing the challenge of achieving the same level of success last season. Despite losing seniors Quinn Cannington, Wayne Chism, Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince from last season s Elite Eight squad, the Vols remain optimistic that their tournament run in March wasn t the program s peak but rather something to build upon. The BC Men s Basketball Coaching Staff Head Coach Michael Jones Head Coach Michael Jones begins his 11th year at Brevard College, having led the Tornados since they became a four-year institution in 1999. In 2009, Coach Jones led the Tornados as they completed the transition to becoming full members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. The Maysville, Ky. native has won 180 games during his 12 year coaching career, with 141 of those victories coming at Brevard College. Coach Jones has been to three National Tournaments, including two while at Brevard College. Jones has also seen five of his players get offered professional contracts to play basketball, including two players in the NBDL. Most impressive for the Men s Basketball team is the 98% graduation rate since Coach Jones took over the reins. During his tenure at Brevard College, Jones has had three seasons with 20 wins or more. In 2001-02 his squad was ranked as high as No. 12 nationally in the NAIA. Coach Jones came to Brevard from Jackson, Kentucky where he was the head coach at Hazard Community College. There he led a Division III junior college to a 21-9 record in his first year as a head coach against all Division I junior colleges. In the 1998-1999 season at Hazard Community College, the team began with a preseason No. 8 ranking. Before his three year stint at Hazard Community College, Jones was on the staff at Eastern Kentucky University for four years. From 1994-1996, he was a Graduate Assistant Coach for the team under Coach Mike Calhoun. Coach Jones is married to the former Lori Mason and has an nine-year old daughter, Rheanna, and twin girls Caris and Lilly. Notes and information on BC Basketball SAC Preseason The Tornados were ranked by the coaches of the South Atlantic Conference to finish tenth in the SAC Preseason Poll. Brevard received 33 total votes in the preseason poll. Lincoln Memorial leads the preseason poll, receiving 94 votes and seven first place votes. Newcomer Anderson and last year s SAC regular season champion also received first place votes in the preseason poll with Anderson receiving two and Catawba receiving the last one. Exhibition Season The Tornados open up the 2008-2009 campaign with a pair of exhibition games against Big South opponent UNC Asheville and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent North Carolina A&T. Brevard gained valuable experience in those two games last season as they opened up the year winning five of their first seven games of the season on their way to the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Regional tournament. This year, the Tornados open up their season against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference in the University of Tennessee on November 3rd, and with a new roster, hope the challenge at the beginning of the season will lead to good things down the road. 09-10 Statistical Comparison CategoRY bc UT Overall Record 21-10 28-9 Points Per Game 77.9 73.5 Opp. Points Per Game 77.1 65.2 Scoring Margin +0.8 +8.3 Rebounds Per Game 38.9 36.6 Opp. Rebounds Per Game 33.1 35.4 Rebound Margin +5.8 +1.1 Field Goal Pct. 48.2 45.6 Opp. Field Goal Pct. 43.9 39.6 3-Point FG Pct. 33.0 32.0 Opp. 3-Point FG Pct. 38.2 29.7 Free Throw Pct. 68.9 67.1 Assists Per Game 15.5 14.3 Turnovers Per Game 16.5 13.2 Opp. Turnovers Per Game 14.1 16.2 Turnover Margin -2.5 +2.9 Blocks Per Game 3.9 3.6 Steals Per Game 8.0 7.8 What s New for BC in 2010-2011 The Tornados return three players who saw significant playing time last season in Jermichael Tanner, Drew Schauss and Donald Hudson. The Tornados do welcome back to the court from last season, Josh Jordan and Whitney Galloway as the duo will provide much-needed depth and experience to the team, while newcomers Gaither Hendrix, Travis Jackson, Dominique Pickett, Joseph Davis, Vincent Dombrowski, Chavis Hamilton and Darius Moose will all compete for playing time immediately. Moving up the record books Josh Roper opens up the 2010-2011 season in the record books in multiple categories, having set multiple single game and single season records last year in his first season with the Tornados. Roper is currently seventh in BC history in field goal percentage, leads in free throw percentage at 80.3%, leads in points per game with 20.6, and could be among the all-time leaders in scoring, assists and threepointers in his career, currently sitting just outside the top 10 in those categories. Forecast, make it rain With the Tornados losing key post players last year, and the addition of several sharp-shooting guards through transfers, the Tornados will look to make an impact outside of the paint this year as Hendrix, Schauss, Pickett, Felder and Roper will all be gunning from the outside for Coach Michael Jones this season. As a team, Brevard connected on 33.0% of their three-point attempts last season, led by Nathan Whitmire s team-high 45.2%. Local Connection Speaking of a local connection and state connection, the Tornados feature nine players from the state of North Carolina as Coach Jones has recruited heavily in and throughout Western North Carolina to get the top talent of the area for Brevard. Whitney Galloway, Ryson Felder and Gaither Hendrix are examples of local players who have gone on to success with Brevard. 09-10 BC's Record When... Madgen and Smith accounted for 24 of Augusta State s 39 points in the half, while Jonathan Whitson and Josh Roper acquired 21 of Brevard s 34 points in the first stanza. The Jaguars opened the second half on a 7-2 run to extend their lead back to 10 once again at 46-36 with 18:12 left in regulation. The score would hover around the 10-point mark for the next 11 minutes before Daniel Dixon was able to secure Augusta State its largest lead of the game at the time at 13 points with a three-pointer at the 7:49 mark that set the score at 70-57 in Augusta State s favor. The Tornados would not be able to get any closer down the stretch with the Jaguars pulling away for the 18-point, 91-73 victory. Roper was the star for the Tornados in their first ever tournament appearance with the guard scoring a game-high 27 points. Roper shot 50 percent from the field and he was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Brevard s Whitson was the final player in double figures. He had 15 points in total to finish out his career as Brevard College s leading scorer with 2,028 points and finishes as the Tornados all-time leading rebounder.

Tanner s last second layup gives Brevard 2010 Food Lion SAC Championship HICKORY, N.C. Jermichael Tanner (Columbus, N.C.) hit the game-winning lay-up with time running out to help Brevard College (21-9) down Catawba College (20-10), 93-92, to capture the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men s Basketball Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon at Catawba Valley Community College. Brevard s Josh Roper (Charlotte, N.C.) finished with a game-high 24 points while Jonathan Whitson (Clyde, N.C.) added 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as the Tornados captured their first-ever SAC tournament championship. Whitson, who crossed the 2,000-point mark for his career, was named the tournament MVP. Brevard s Darin Dellinger (Stanley, N.C.) chipped in with 18 points and hit four three-pointers as the Tornados clinched the league s automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. Catawba, which rallied from a 19-point, second-deficit (74-55) to take the lead, was led by Dominick Reid s (Charlotte, N.C.) gamehigh 24 points. Reid s half-court heave at the final buzzer bounced off the rim. Donald Rutherford (Morganton, N.C.) came off the bench to score 19 points for the Indians, who had five players finish in double figures despite the setback. Brevard, which never trailed in the contest until 10 seconds left, jumped out to a 44-38 halftime lead and used a 20-5 run early in the second half to take the 74-55 advantage on a lay-up by Drew Schauss (Greens Fork, Ind.) with 9:53 remaining. From there, Catawba slowly cut into the Brevard s lead and a full-court press forced the Tornados until several turnovers (20 total for the contest) and the Indians finally took the lead on a jump shot by Reid with 10 seconds left at 92-91 only to have the Tornados drive the length of the court and end the game on Tanner s game-winning field goal. Sam Carlisle (Raleigh, N.C.) added 16 points and seven rebounds for Brevard, who avenged a pair of regular season setbacks to Catawba. The Indians now await a berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Joining Whitson on the all-tournament team is Roper, Rutherford, Catawba s Antonio Houston and Lincoln Memorial s Desmond Johnson. Brevard head coach Mike Jones: I would hope we can go down in history as the most exciting team in SAC tournament history. It means everything to us. It means everything to the seniors. I m very proud of them. Last Time these teams met... We made the plays we had to make down the stretch. We are very new to this situation and the pressures that go with it.
