John Gavin (1-2, 4.56 ERA) is slated to start on the mound tonight. The series versus Modesto will close out the season for the Giants. The Giants San Jose is 0-4 during their current homestand (0-3 vs. Stockton, 0-1 vs. Modesto) having been outscored by a 29-13 margin. The Giants have lost eight out of their last nine games overall. 80 Losses Last night s defeat dropped the Giants to 57-80 overall this season. It marks San Jose s first 80-loss season since 2003 when they finished 58-82. Inside The Record The Giants have clinched the worst overall record in the California League this season. It s the second consecutive year that San Jose will finish with the worst record in the league (62-78 in 17). Prior to last season, the Giants posted the worst record in the league only once in their first 29 years (1997). San Jose is 18-39 (.316) since July 1 and 28-55 (.337) since the beginning of June. The Giants are only 12-28 in their last 40 home games dating back to June 2 (after starting the season 17-10 at home). For the first time in team history (1988-2018), San Jose will finish with a sub-.500 overall record for three straight seasons (62-78 in 2017, 68-72 in 2016). Team Awards The Giants will recognize their Offensive Player of the Year in a ceremony before tonight s game. Award winners this season include Bryce Johnson (Defensive Player of the Year), Patrick Ruotolo and Nolan Riggs (co-relief Pitchers of the Year) and Dylan Rheault (Good Guy Award). San Jose will also honor their Pitcher of the Year and team MVP during this final series. League Leaderboard Several Giants hitters currently rank among the California League leaders. Heath Quinn is fifth in the league in batting average (.298) and sixth in OPS (.863). Wander Franco is second in doubles (39) and fifth in hits (141). Jalen Miller is tied for fifth in doubles (34) and seventh in hits (136). Gio Brusa is tied for fourth in home runs (19) and eighth in RBI s (70). Johneshwy Fargas leads the league in stolen bases (45) while Bryce Johnson is fourth (30). Miller Named Postseason All-Star Jalen Miller has been named to the postseason California League All-Star team. Miller was San Jose s lone selection to the team. The former third round draft pick is batting.273 with 34 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs, 61 RBI s and 11 stolen bases in 120 games. Miller is currently rated the #23 prospect in the San Francisco organization by MLB.com and was also a midseason California League All-Star. Miller entered 2018 with a career.224 batting average over his first three professional seasons. No Playoffs The Giants will miss the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2002-03. Prior to the current two-year drought (2017-18), the Giants reached the playoffs 12 times in 13 seasons from 2004-2016. August Review The Giants posted a 10-18 record in August (April 15-10, May 14-15, June 10-16, July 8-21). San Jose s top individual performers in August: Johneshwy Fargas (.322 AVG, 10 SB), Wander Franco (.297 AVG, 19 RBI), Kelvin Beltre (.293 AVG, 2 HR) and DJ Myers (six starts, 3-1, 2.86 ERA). Climbing The Charts Gio Brusa has hit 36 career home runs with the San Jose Giants, which is tied for fourth in team-history (Travis Ishikawa, Angel Villalona) and the most ever by a switch hitter. His 36 homers have come over 220 games with San Jose the last two seasons (17 HR in 2017, 19 HR in 2018). Wander Franco s 39 doubles this year rank fifth on the SJ Giants single-season list.
