MARCH 2013 President s Message Betty Berginski Waiting for spring. This month I would like to recognize those committees that keep us informed, active and enjoying time with our neighbors and friends. The Communications Committee provides property owners with information related to activities, actions, benefits and life style values of the Tidewater Plantation Community. This information is provided in the form of monthly newsletters, website operations, telephone directories, bulletin boards, bulk mailing activities, broadcast e-mails and welcoming new neighbors. As you can see this is a very involved and ongoing committee. Many times we take these things for granted and never realize how much time and effort is spent by volunteers to provide these services to the community. Do you have a good article or photo you would like in the Newsletter? The newsletter is looking for articles contributed by residents to include as space permits. The articles should pertain to various clubs or individual achievements relating to Tidewater. The articles will be placed by pertinent dates or as space allows. We are also encouraging photos by residents of Tidewater areas or wildlife. Submit all articles and photos to newsarticles@tidewaterhoa.org. When you have a great time at one of the many Tidewater community functions be sure to thank the Recreation Committee for all the planning and organization that went into the event. The Recreation Committee works with the BOD to develop and coordinate recreational activities to enhance the social and recreation opportunities of Tidewater residents. They also recommend to the BOD guide lines and parameters relative to the use of various association recreational facilities. Many of their activities have a charitable component such as the Summer Concert Series 50/50 drawing. Please be sure to take advantage of these activities if you have not done so. I would also like to point out those unsung heroes who volunteer on their own to organize bridge groups, mahjong, knitting, quilting, book clubs, golf, tennis, aerobics, Tastebuds and all the other activities that are too numerous to mention. There is always something going on. Just check out some of the activities and get involved. Our Promotions Committee is very unique. They work to promote a positive image of Tidewater Plantation through sponsored activities. This committee has put our community on the map through their yearly TCPC Tournament. This and other Promotions sponsored events throughout the year point out what a caring community Tidewater is by the large amount of charitable donations that have been made possible through these events. Our hats go off to this committee and all its volunteers for their caring and sharing. Enjoy the effects of the Sprucing Up Campaign started by our last BOD as spring approaches. Bill Pearson The 2012 Tidewater Patriot Day Charity Golf Tournament will go down in the books as the best ever.to date. The only problem with having a very successful event is how to top it next year. TCTC is working hard to make this year s tournament weekend even more exciting and enjoyable for our players and Tidewater residents. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements about this year's tournament. Last year s tournament was a sell out and we have expanded the marketing of the event this year to reach even more players. It is not too early to plan on getting a foursome together and save the date (Monday, September 2nd, 2013) to play in this year s tournament. Entry forms are available on the TCTC web site www.tidewatercharitytournament.com and at the Tidewater Pro Shop. To achieve our goals we need to expand The Tidewater Charity Tournament Committee, the operating group for the tournament, by a few more members. It is truly one of the most rewarding uses of your time imaginable. When you see the joy your efforts bring to the military families that attend the tournament and hear from the local charities about the services that were made possible because of the tournament, it makes it all worthwhile. If you can spare some time for a great community event that makes the world a little better, please call TCTC at 283-3752. The planning for 2013 is picking up speed. A weekend trip to the PGA Show in Orlando in January to see what s new in the world of golf, networking with vendors and other event directors, spreading the news about the tournament and attending the Folds of Honor Reception has resulted in new enthusiasm for the 2013 tournament. We are also energized by the number of early sponsorship commitments this year. The endorsement by these sponsors so early into the year is a great encouragement to our committee. A special thank-you to: A&I Fire and Water Restoration, The Joan Crosby Shop, New Way Properties, Universal Concrete, Myrtle Beach Automotive, Firehouse Subs, Eagle Nest Golf Course and Five Star Contracting. TCTC raises funds year round via Wheel Night at the Tidewater Grille, the Par Three Fundraiser on the 3rd Hole at Tidewater held over two weekends in the spring and, of course, the Tidewater Patriot Day Charity Golf Tournament on Labor Day. It s all geared towards having fun while making a positive difference in people s lives. In the last eight years we have given away tens of thousands in cash and prizes, donated over $204,000 to charity, facilitated in the awarding of college scholarships and material assistance to an injured service member. Who knows what 2013 will bring! Tastebuds Flossie Chapman It is time to sign up for the spring 2013 Tastebuds season. Four sets of people come together in the host s home. The host provides the main meal and the three other couples or single person provide the salad, appetizer, and dessert. Everyone provides their own libations. The sign up deadline for the spring season is March 30, 2013. Please email Cinde Woodcock at cinde55@aol.com before that date so the groupings can be put together. Sign up soon and enjoy an evening of great food, conversation, and friends, old and new! People Who Keep Tidewater Plantation Going Ever notice how all the public bathrooms in Tidewater are always spotless? Ever wonder how the kitchen at the Amenity Center is always clean as is the carpet? No, it isn t the elves that come during the night. It s Billie Ward and her golf cart traveling from one place to another keeping Tidewater pristine. Billie loves Tidewater and it shows. She has been a dedicated worker in Tidewater. Next time you see Billie give her a big HI and Thanks for all you do. She deserves it! Red Cups Host Super Bowl Party The annual Red Cups Super Bowl party was held at the TPCA on Sunday, February 4th. Besides the sandwiches, salads and chips offered here were five crock pots of Jo Moore s famous chili for all to enjoy. The event was well attended with both Red Cups and their wives. There were football pools with winners for each quarter and the end. A great thank you to the coordinators of the event Ed Boyer, Paul Cioffi, Ron Nichols and Bruce Wilt. The pools will be open Easter weekend and the Teal Lake pool will be ready as always. The responsibility belongs to Jeff Bunn, Teal Lake s man in charge of maintenance. Jeff has been working in Tidewater for the last four years and exclusively in Teal Lake for the last two years. Not only does Jeff clean the pool every morning making it safe and beautiful but he clears the sidewalks, repairs rotted windows, removes mold from sidewalks and keeps those pesky spider webs from interrupting your walk around our beautiful lake. These are only a small part of his responsibilities. Next time Jeff goes by say Thanks Jeff. He deserves that pat on the back! 4

In 1971, Mr. Jackson Vereen deeded 115 acres to the Horry County Historical Preservation Commission and its successors for the establishment and maintenance of a park. The gardens were open to the public in 1973. By 1985, the Historic Commission dissolved and the park was transferred to Horry County. boardwalks were added in the year 2000. Center opened. The 4,750 square foot building was designed The 1500 feet of marsh In 2008 t h e C. B. B e r r y Community for meetings, historical exhibits and an education facility. It was named after C.B. Berry who was involved with the p a r k f r o m initially asking Mr. Jackson Vereen to donate the property to serving on the Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens Board for thirty Years. Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens, located at the beginning of Rt. 179 going toward Calabash, N.C., is a 114 acre tract of woodlands and salt marsh one mile south of the South Carolina State line. This dog friendly walking trail leads to the Intracoastal and contains picnic tables and a bench swing for viewing the marsh. The Vereen Gardens also includes the Kings Highway which was part of the Atlantic Coastal Transportation system, in place, at least from the time of the earliest white settlement in the American Colonies. It is said to have been traveled by Lafayette in 1777 and Washington in 1791. It is one of the few stretches of the Kings Highway to retain its unpaved original appearance. 5
