PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM GUIDE Curriculum Guidelines: 1. The program for K and grades 1-2 will be based on developing fundamental movements like balancing, climbing, rolling, jumping, running, moving in a certain space, aiming, throwing, catching, kicking, etc. 2. The program for grades 1 2 will continue to develop these fundamental movements, and apply them more in games, or game--like situations. 3. The program for grades 3 6 starts with modified games, to learn the basics of most sports and activities. Specific drills and exercises are already being taught, and will continue to develop. 4. The program for grades 7-9 specializes more in the specific sports and activities, with skills, agility and conceptual understanding to be developed. Time Allocation: PE will be taught a minimum of 3 times per week for 45 minutes with the other day being Health. Facilities/Equipment: Due to limited facilities some units are unable to be taught. Each unit/activity is listed next to a month. This is only a guide teachers are free to change the activity based on the month. Throughout the course of the year classes are outside and the inside activities are held in the Monarch Community Hall. Units: Certain activities are scheduled based on the season. For example in the upper grades Volleyball & Basketball are scheduled around the school season (the same time as other schools are running these units). Teachers are not limited to what is listed in the grade programs. Teacher s are free to replace non-compulsory units with other units if they so desire. Assessment: Students are assessed based on Alberta Education s ABCD Outcomes (Activity, Benefits Health, Cooperation, Do it Daily). In addition all students at PCS will receive a mark for preparation and in Grades 5-9 knowledge and understandings (For most or all units in Grades 5-9 students will be required to keep a portfolio checklist of their achieved skills. Students will also be required to complete a short quiz at the end of each unit based on the sport/activity. This will make up a portion of their grade for PE) All students in Grades 3-9 are expected to complete a Monthly Activity Calendar where they need to record the types of activities they do for the month. This needs to be handed in to the teacher at the end of the month. This is their homework portion for PE. 1

ALBERTA EDUCATION PHYSICAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES Students will be assessed in all of these areas throughout the Physical Education course.
