Horizon League Game GREEN BAY TO TAKE ON LOYOLA SATURDAY AFTERNOON Green Bay hopes to get back to.500 in Horizon League play and bounce back from a stinging overtime loss on Friday as it plays against Loyola on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix aims to sweep the season series with the Ramblers after winning the first meeting, 71-68, on Jan. 13. The Phoenix lost Thursday at UIC when Robo Kreps hit a buzzer-beating jumper in overtime that gave the Flames a 63-61 victory. Green Bay s Rahmon Fletcher had sent the game into overtime with a last-second layup and finished with nine points. Freshman Alec Brown led the Phoenix with 14 points and eight rebounds while junior Jarvis Williams had 11 of his 13 points after halftime. Loyola is trying to end a four-game losing streak after losing to Milwaukee, 66-57, on Thursday night. The Ramblers got 16 points and 14 rebounds from senior Andy Polka in the contest. In the first meeting between Green Bay and Loyola, Fletcher scored 21 points while fellow senior Bryquis Perine added 17 points. The duo, which combined for just 17 points on Thursday, hit a combined six threes in the Jan. 13 contest against the Ramblers at the Resch Center. Green Bay s four-game winning streak in the series includes an 87-71 Phoenix victory at the Gentile Center last February. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. The Ramblers hold a 9-7 edge in Chicago. THE LAST MEETING: Seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine combined for 37 points as Green Bay defeated Loyola 71-68 at the Reach Center. The Phoenix hit 47.9 percent from the field while holding the Ramblers to just 37.5 percent. Freshman Alec Brown added 11 points and three blocks for Green Bay while the Ramblers were led by Ben Averkamp s 19 points. WILLIAMS WATCH: Junior Jarvis Williams has scored at least eight points in five-straight games, including double figures in four contests. Williams is averaging 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds during that stretch. TOP-10 OF ALL-TIME: Fletcher continues to work his way up the Green Bay scoring chart. On pace to finish his career in fifth place all-time, Fletcher is currently in seventh place on the scoring ledger. He has 1,583 career points and is one of five active Horizon League players with at least 1,500 career points, joining Butler s Matt Howard, Cleveland State s Norris Cole, Wright State s Vaughn Duggins and UIC s Robo Kreps. RECORD BREAKER: Brown continues to add to his single-season block record that he broke with six blocks against Wright State on Jan. 28. After swatting three shots away Thursday, the freshman has 55 blocks this season. He is averaging 2.2 per game, and broke the record previously shared by Larry Hill (1991-92) and Terry Evans (2006-07). The 7-foot-1 freshman also holds the school records for block in a game, blocks in a game at the Resch Center and blocks in a season by a freshman. HOMEBOUND: Head coach Brian Wardle is returning to the area where he grew up and played high school basketball. Wardle played his high school basketball at Hinsdale Central before continuing onto Marquette. Assistant coach Chrys Cornelius is also from the Chicago area while Green Bay has three players on its roster from the state of Illinois - Seth Evans (Seneca), Troy Snyder (Chicago) and Terry Johnson (Chicago). WHAT THE WIND S BLOWIN IN: Wardle has gone back to his roots in recruiting. In November, three Chicago area players signed to play at Green Bay, including Aaron Armstead (Hales Fransiscan), Greg Mays (Crete-Monee) and Kiefer Sykes (Marshall). The two games were the first time Fletcher had 20 in back-to-back games since the last time Green Bay hosted Loyola and UIC. He scored 29 and 24 against Loyola and UIC respectively on Dec. 3 and 5, 2009. RISING RAHMON Fletcher is now in the top-10 all-time in Green Bay s storied history in points, assists, steals and field goals made and attempted. If he continues at his current average this season, Fletcher will score over 1,700 career points and finish in the top five on the program s scoring list. The senior is also on pace to finish in the top-10 in scoring average, three-point field goals made and attempted and games played. MIGHTY MOUSE Fletcher, nicknamed Mouse, has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double figures in 20 of 24 games, including at least 15 points 16 times. In the 20 games in which he has reached double figures, Fletcher is averaging 17.8 points and shooting 48.2 percent (132-274). OFFENSIVE OUTPUT The win over Detroit on Jan. 30 was one of Green Bay s best offensive games of the season. The team had season highs of 85 points, 20 assists and 11 three-pointers made. Green Bay also had just five turnovers, a season low for the team. KAM CATCHES FIRE After a tough start to his freshman season, Kam Cerroni has knocked down shots in the past four games, hitting six three-pointers. Cerroni started the season just 2-for-24 from long range before hitting 2-of-3 against Wright State and 3-of-5 against Detroit. The freshman missed the season s first 10 games while being slated to redshirt before being activated at Wisconsin. HOME SWEET HOME Green Bay improved to 9-3 at home in 2010-11 with the win over Detroit, its sixth in its last seven games at the Resch Center. Since 2007-08, the Phoenix is 43-12 at the Resch, a 78.2 winning percentage. Senior Rahmon Fletcher is averaging 17.5 points per game at home, where Green Bay has a plus-4.8 rebounding margin. OFFENSIVE GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay ranks first in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds per game (13.3). Freshman Daniel Turner, who had nine offensive rebounds against Duquesne, is tied for seventh in the league at 2.4 per game. Green Bay is grabbing a league-leading 37.4 percent of the rebounds off its missed shots. COMEBACK KIDS Including Jan. 30 against Detroit, seven of GREEN BAY ROSTER No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Green Bay s 12 wins this season have come in games where they have trailed in the second half. In four of those wins, Green Bay has been down at halftime - Miami (down 5), North Dakota (down 10), Wyoming (down 5) and Valparaiso (down by 10). Green Bay trailed Valpo 28-18 early in the second half on Jan. 23 before outscoring the Crusaders 45-33 the rest of the way. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Over the past 15 games, Brown is averaging 11.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks while shooting 54.7 percent (64-117). He scored 13 of his 15 points added six rebounds in the second half alone in the win at Valpo. The streak started against Wisconsin on Dec. 13, a game in which Brown scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. BROWN S BLOCK PARTY Brown broke the school record for blocks in a season against Wright State and now has 55 in his freshman campaign. He broke the record of 47 previously shared by Larry Hill (1991-92) and Terry Evans (2006-07). Brown also broke Evans record for blocks by a freshman (29 in 2005-06). The 7-foot-1 Brown s eight blocks against North Dakota (12/20) broke a school record for the Phoenix previously set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, 1982. It also tied the Resch Center record and helped the Phoenix break the team record for blocks in a game with 10. His average of 2.2 blocks per game ranks third in the Horizon League. He also had six blocks in his college debut against Minnesota Duluth. I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher currently has 187 steals in his Phoenix career, ranking second in Green Bay history behind only Terry Evans 237. The senior is fifth in the Horizon League in steals per game, averaging 1.6 per contest. His five steals against Miami (Nov. 21) tied his career high and tied for the ninthmost in school history. SENIORS IN THE SECOND The main reasons for Green Bay s comeback wins have been seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine. In the second halves of the team s wins, the pair has combined to average 17.3 points (Fletcher-10.7, Perine-6.6) and hit 69-of-135 shots from the field (51.1 percent), including PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE 18-of-38 three-pointers. Fletcher scored 10 of his 13 in the second half to help Green Bay defeat Milwaukee and 14 of his 21 in the second against Loyola. GANG REBOUNDING Despite being the league s top rebounding team, Green Bay has only one player in the league s top-10 in rebounds per game. The Phoenix rebounds with a team effort, and four players are averaging between 4.6 and 5.8 boards per game. Seven different players have led the team in rebounding at least once in a Horizon League game. CHARITY STRIPE Fletcher is 65-for-89 (73.0 percent) from the foul line this season. Brown has been to the line more than any Green Bay player and is shooting 70.3 percent (64-93) this season. He hit all seven of his free throws against Valpo on Jan. 23. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. The 21-inch size differential between the two players is the biggest of any teammates in the country. JOLT OF JARVIS Jarvis Williams, who missed seven games this season with an injury, has been effective since returning to the lineup. Since being reinserted into the starting lineup at small forward, Williams is averaging 9.7 points and 6.1 rebounds over a 14-game stretch, shooting 54.5 percent (55-101). START IT UP Brian Wardle has used five different starting lineups this season, but the same five have started the last nine games and 14 of the last 15. Daniel Turner (20 games), Troy Snyder (three games) and Jarvis Williams (two games) have all started at the four spot. Turner and Williams have started the last 20 and 14 games, respectively.
