Kenley Jansen, LAD....176 AND THEN IT WAS ONE: Jon Lester tossed six solid innings and the offense scored early and often as the Chicago Cubs last night earned a 10-2 win in St. Louis, securing at least a tie of the N.L. Central title and reducing their magic number to clinch the division outright to one (one Cubs win or one Brewers loss). The Cubs enter play tonight a season-high 20-games over.500 with a seasonhigh 6.0-game lead over the Brewers in the N.L. Central Division. The Cubs have now reached 20-games above.500 for a third-season in a row for the first time since a five-year run from 1934-38 thanks to Ed Hartig. The Cubs entered the All-Star Break with a 5.5-game deficit to the Brewers, but have gained 11.5 games over Milwaukee since then. The Cubs, who reached the NLCS in 2015 and won the World Series last season, are attempting to reach the postseason in three-consecutive campaigns for the first time since 1906-08. WHAT LIES AHEAD: The Cubs are 11-2 in their last 13 games and 19-8 in their last 27 with six games left this four-game series in St. Louis (1-0) completes a 10- game trip that started last week in Tampa Bay (1-1) and continued this past weekend in Milwaukee (3-1) the Cubs return home following this series to close out the regular season with three games vs. Cincinnati starting Friday. The Cubs are 42-28 vs. the N.L. Central, a.600 winning pct., by far the best intra-divisional record of any N.L. Central team (Brewers are second at 36-34). JAKE THE SNAKE: Jake Arrieta tonight makes his second start since leaving his Sept. 4 outing in Pittsburgh due to a right hamstring injury he threw five strong innings last Thursday (1 ER, ND, in Chicago s 5-3, 10-inning victory in Milwaukee) sitting at 14-9 in 29 starts this season, Arrieta needs one more win to become the first Cubs pitcher to record three-straight 15-win campaigns since Greg Maddux did so in five-consecutive seasons from 1988-92. BRYZZTO?: Kris Bryant last night connected for his 29th homer of the season and the 94th blast of his young career, already tying him for 25th place on the all-time franchise home run list with Dave Kingman. With one more home run, Bryant would record his second 30-homer season by his Age-25 campaign he would be only the second player in franchise history to achieve that accomplishment, joining Ron Santo (1964 and 1965) and Anthony Rizzo (2014 and 2015). JUST WIN, BABY: The Cubs have 288 regular season victories since the start of the 2015 season, marking the winningest three-season span for the franchise in over 100 years the franchise last won more games in a three-season span from 1909-1911 (300 victories). The Cubs have secured their third-straight winning campaign dating to 2015 this is just the third stretch of at least three-straight winning campaigns for Chicago in the last 78 seasons starting in 1940 that includes a six-year run from 1967-72 and 2007-09. Chicago is 114-55 (.675) in August, September and October regular season games since the start of 2015, the top mark in baseball.
