The Final Event! Kisling and Kohr Prevail March 26, 2011 By Joe Noose Neumeister Speed Zone in Mount Holly, NJ was host to the final event of the Retro East TM 2010-2011 Winter Series. While I expected a pretty good turn out I never expected we would have the largest field that we have had all year at any of our events. Note that some of the regulars couldn t make it either! Concours was won by Roger Ruggieri s Cooper with Hip Culy s Lotus 49 (left) 2 nd and Randy Kohr s Cooper (right) 3 rd The races today would give us the results for the overall winner of the series as well as the folks who would make the top 3 in the Formula 1 and Can-Am classes. A full finals result report is being issued separately. A total of 58 entrants made their way to South Jersey to give it a go on the beautiful Engleman. This track is a blast to drive and is not just a punch bowl either. Qualifying got underway and the times looked good. No records were broken but it was only a difference of.001 between the TQ man Jay Kisling and Matt Bruce. There would be a total of 4 Mains run with the usual 2 move-ups from each. First up was the D Main. D Main Recap The D Main was smooth and Hip Culy wasted no time in taking and holding the lead. The battle for the 2 nd moveup spot was a good one with our own Jersey John holding off Phil Badger and Larry Cyr, using one of my loaners. Phil just got by Larry for the final podium spot. F1 Event Formula 1 would be up first for the day. We had 24 entrants for this one and the field looked great. Hip Culy took the win (center) with (left) Jersey John Molnar 2 nd and (right) Phil Badger 3 rd.

B Main Recap The B Main had a pretty good line up so the race for the 2 move-up spots was going to be a good one for sure. At stake too were the needed points for the overall in the F1 class. I jumped into the lead with Roger Ruggieri right on my heels. Ray Duran and Mike Katz were right there with us. On any other day this could have been an A main. The racing remained tight and Roger prevailed over me for the win but we both moved up. Roger Ruggieri took the win (center) with (left) Noose 2 nd and (right) Ray Duran 3 rd. D Main Results: 1. Hip Culy - 229 Laps Best Time 5.878 2. Jersey John - 223 5.9295 3. Phil Badger - 221 5.9291 4. Larry Cyr - 221 5.9297 5. Jeff Bates 208 6.097 6. Ed Hilland 206-5.601 Fast Time of the main C Main Recap It s not too often you see some of the names that were in the C-Main. Guys like Ed Sohl and Dale Granger are usually right up there at the top of the field for sure. Ed got right to it and we all wondered if he was going to have another enduro day but alas it was not to be as he got slam jammed as we say and broke. Hip Culy took the win again (center) with (left) Matt Ramirez 2 nd and (right) Dale Granger 3 rd. C Main Results 1. Hip Culy 2. Matt Ramirez 3. Dale Granger 4. Steve Vogt 5. Jersey John 6. Phil Badger 7. James Bennett 8. Ed Sohl B Main Results 1. Roger Ruggieri 244 Laps Best time 5.706 2. Noose 242 5.710 3. Ray Duran 240 5.706 4. Mike Katz 239-5.816 5. Matt Ramirez 239-5.648 - Fast Time of the main 6. John Streisguth 235 5.819 7. Doug Murphey 234 5.706 8. Hip Culy 231 5.819 A Main Time! Another tough Retro East TM A Main! The only question was whether Jay Kisling would continue his dominance in F1. He did in this one for sure by taking the win by a margin of 9 laps. That usually doesn t happen. Matt Bruce did not have a good start but climbed right back to finish behind Jay and Wes Pikunis came prepared for this one because he was trying to get the 3 rd spot in the overall from me and Roger. He got close and ran a great race. And so Jay Kisling earned the F1 Class Championship with this win and tightened the difference in the overall Championship with Matt.

Matt s car: Samson chassis, 109.1 grams, Fast Ones ProSlot, OS Cooper, 7/27, JK Guide, JK Treated Rears, JK / Bruce Fronts, 3 rd Eye Controller. A Main Results 1. Jay Kisling 253 Laps Best Time 5.487 & fast time of the main 2. Matt Bruce - 244 Laps 5.597 3. Wes Pikunis 244 5.539 4. Roger Ruggieri 243 5.597 5. Randy Kohr 240 5.706 6. Ray Carlisi 234 5.707 7. Noose 234 5.710 8. Mac McPherson 234-5.488 Jay s car: Samson chassis, 113.7 grams, Fast Ones ProSlot, OS Cooper, 7/28, Parma Guide, JK Treated Rears, Cyr / Mac Fronts, 3 rd Eye Controller. Wes car: Samson chassis, 114.8 grams, Fast Ones ProSlot, OS Cooper, 7/28, JK Guide, JK Treated Rears, JK Fronts, Difalco HD 30 Controller. Can-Am Event The premier event. The battle for the overall driver s Championship. The crowning of the Can-Am class King. Could Jay take overall Championship for a second time? Would Matt finish second again 4 years in a row? It was race time folks so let s see what happened.

We had 34 entrants for this one. This was the largest regular race field ever in Retro East TM and only 1 less entrant than at the Fall Brawl (35). Concours had some new inners this time. Ed Hilland s JK TI22 (center) was 1 st, (left) 2 nd, was Hip Culy s OS Ti22, and Roger Ruggieri s OS Ti22 (right) was 3 rd. E Main Results 1. Adam Chayla 228 Laps 5.980 Best Time 2. Phil Badger 227 5.871 3. Jeff Bates 224 5.707 Fast time of the main 4. Larry Cyr 222-5.980 5. Ed Hilland 222 6.038 6. Steve Vogt 221 5.820 7. Ed Chayla 214 6.089 8. James Bennett 212 5.866 9. Frank Giordano 207 5.882 10. Jersey John 5.882 D Main Recap Yeah, OK, so here I was in the D Main. OMG Enduro day laid ahead I hoped. The cars I had ready didn t work in the morning and had no time to get anything else setup so I went with an old reliable car but I know it needed more motor. Meanwhile, Wes Pikunis was in need of a ride. As usual, I say here take this one and the curse continued. LOL Of course I never even tried that car because it was planned to be a loaner for another guy who didn t take it. Lessoned learned? Probably not. Qualifying got underway and the times were fast. It looked like you had to be in the low 5.2s to make the A main for sure. Proverbial TQ Man John Gorski got the TQ spot and the only one to get into the 5.1s. It was surprising to see who was in the lower mains as most would normally be near the top. We would run 5 mains with the E having a 10 man round robin. It turned out to be quite a race. For most heats Wes and I ran side by side. He got a lead when I went to the top lanes and drove great to hold onto it. Meanwhile, Rapid Rick Raducha, or as we call him Hooked On Retro Rick, drove great and got the 3 rd podium spot. At that time, one of the racers who had qualified for the C Main had an emergency and had to leave thus enabling Rick to also move up. Noose (left) 2 nd, Wes Pikunis (center) 1 st, Rapid Rick (right) 3 rd E Main Recap As expected this was going to be a close one. The competition was great. Newcomer Adam Chayla got his very fist podium in his first retro event! He gave it everything he had to get by Phil Badger and Jeff Bates for the move-up. Larry Cyr ran a great race along with other newcomers Ed Hilland and Ed Chayla. Jersey John had some issues and lost a lot of time in this one. Phil Badger 2 nd, Adam Chayla 1 st, Jeff Bates 3rd D Main Results 1. Wes P 246 Laps Best Time & Fast Time of Main- 5.594 2. Noose 243 5.597 3. Rapid Rick 241 5.758 4. Phil Badger 235 5.660 5. Adam Chayla 233 5.819 6. Hip Culy 230-5.648 7. Mac McPherson 229 5.757 8. Bill Sutton 3 Broken Guide & Chassis

C Main Recap Once again, on any other race day this could have been an A Main. Tough competition in these parts! Wes continued to NOT FOLLOW team orders LOL. He took the lead and ran with it for another win in this one. Meanwhile, I had Mike Katz nipping at me and Roger Ruggieri and John Streisguth right with him for that 2 nd move-up spot. Katz would get the 3 rd podium just ahead of Roger. Noose (left) 2 nd, Wes Pikunis (center) 1 st, Mike Katz (right) 3 rd C Main Results 1. Wes P 253 5.484 2. Noose 245 5.538 3. Mike Katz 244 5.593 4. Roger Ruggieri 244-5.600 5. John Streisguth 243 5.6012 6. Vinny Spina 226 5.6010 7. Rapid Rick 213 5.648 8. Mike Mankin 207-5.483 Fast Time of the Main B Main Recap It was futile to have We follow team orders. LOL He was on a roll! He had a bit more of a challenge in this one though. Ray Duran was fast and local Tony Lang had a rocket. I had some front tire issues as did Wes in the last main actually. Seems the rubber didn t want to stay on the hub. Hmm oh well. Good day anyway. The top 3 went at it while the rest of us bounced back forth in position. Wes P (left) 2 nd, Ray Duran (center) 1 st, Tony Lang (right) 3 rd B Main Results 1. Ray Duran 252 Laps Best Time & Fast Main Time 5.383 2. Wes P 251 5.437 3. Tony Lang 250-5.430 4. Ray Carlisi 246 5.546 5. Ed Sohl 245 5.499 6. Doug Murphey 242 5.546 7. Al Pollack 237 5.6016 8. Noose 237 5.6013 A Main Recap The final event. The last race. The battle for the crown. It s was A Main time! Whoosh they were off. For the first few heats it was a back and forth thing between Randy Kohr, Matt Bruce and John Gorski. At one point they were inches apart. Mr. Daytona Bill Gerhart was giving it a run but would end the season as he began it on this track with a win. Jay Kisling had some troubles in the first two heats and was making a run for it now. Dale Granger was at the back and I believe Wes ran out of gas. Dang youngins. Matt charged hard and so was Jay. Randy had a body pin issue but it didn t stop him from holding onto the lead. Matt had 2 nd locked and the battle for 3 rd was on between Jay and Gorski with Jay getting it. Matt Bruce (left) 2 nd, Randy Kohr (center) 1 st, Jay Kisling (right) 3 rd And with his finish Matt Bruce captured the Can-Am Class for the series. As for the overall Driver s Champion, well you will have to stay tuned for the Special Report. The points had to be figured out. I brought the laptop for that this day. A Main Results Meanwhile, here are the results from the A Main. 1. Randy Kohr 256 Laps 5.429 Best Time 2. Matt Bruce 255 5.382 3. Jay Kisling 252 5.390 4. John Gorski 252-5.266 Fast Time of the Main 5. Ray Duran 252 5.374 6. Bill Gerhart 244 5.491 7. Dale Granger 240 53539 8. Wes P 234 5.491

Randy s car: Skunkworks chassis, 106.3 grams, ProSlot, JK TI22, 8/29, Red Fox Guide, JK Treated Rears, Sonic Fronts, 3 rd Eye Controller Jay s car: Tony P Triagra chassis, ProSlot, OS TI22, 8/30, Parma Guide,JK Treated Rears, Cyr / Mac Fronts, 3 rd Eye Controller Matt s car: Tony P Project X chassis, ProSlot, OS TI22, 8/29, JK Guide, JK Treated Rears, Sonic / Bruce Fronts, 3 rd Eye Controller Well that s it for another fun packed, competitive Retro East Winter Series race. Thanks to Jay and the whole Speed Zone crew, especially Mrs. Sarge who was very busy putting the results up to the web, taking food orders and handling everything else that day! Thanks of course to all the racers who made this event very memorable. And Wes you can not follow team orders anytime when you drive like that! LOL The Spring Summer Series kicks off on April 9, 2011 with GT Coupes and Jail Door GP cars at Dom s Raceway in Creamridge, NJ. CYA!
