P r e s i d e n t s L e t t e r Thanksgiving thoughts I am writing this on Thanksgiving weekend. Thanksgiving is the one official event of the year in which we are supposed to ponder the things in our lives which we are fortunate to have. Some things appear on most everyone s list; things like good health, having enough money to keep us housed and fed, having the luxury of at least one true long-term friend or even feeling lucky that the family car is still running. I agree that those sorts of things are worthy of being on the I m thankful for... list but you and I share one we sometimes take for granted, and shouldn t. We ride. We ride and that s not trivial. When they study why some people are happy with their lives and others aren t, the happy people turn out to have somehow achieved balance. Not the fall down on your bike balance but balance between work and play, between things we have to do and things we want to do between the things we do out of responsibility and the things we simply choose to do and which are emotionally rewarding to us. You probably never thought of motorcycle riding as a means to a balanced life, but it is. I have said many times that I simply cannot imagine what my life would have been like without motorcycles. I started out on dirt bikes. One of the first things I learned was, you can t ride a motorcycle while you continue to worry about problems at work. Why? Because if your mind is occupied thinking about work, you crash! It s that simple. Riding demands your undivided attention, unless, of course, you enjoy crashing. At our Club meeting last month, I showed the movie Why We Ride. In that movie, they talk about how quickly you find yourself forgetting about the cares of the day when you get on your bike. I think of it as benefit number one for riders. Then there is the way being a rider reinforces your self-worth and sense of accomplishment. Helen Keller famously told us that Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. Riders like you are not risk adverse. You have accepted the risk and practiced the needed skills which allow you to enjoy the I m good at this feelings of accomplishment. You all understand at some level that you are doing something that most people can t find the courage to do. You are in the daring adventure class! Honestly, I prefer to spend my life in the company of the daring adventure folks. For welcoming me into this group, I will always be grateful to my friend, Bill Osband. He took me on my first-ever dirt ride. I had no idea at the time that I had been introduced to a lifetime of wonderful friends and shared pleasures which continue to this day. Motorcycles and people who ride them what a gift. Love you guys. I hope your own Thanksgivings were wonderful too. Ride safe, Jeff Burns BMWMCC President BMWMCC.org In the Wind 2

January 1st Ride New Year Day Ride to Rockyard Brewery First ride of the year! Join us at 11:00 AM at the Rockyard American Grill & Brewing Company located in Castle Rock. Begin the New Year with this popular annual ride to the Rockyard Brewery Restaurant located west of I-25 and south of the outlet stores at exit 183. Riders from the BMWMCC, Pikes Peak BMW Riders and Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Riders Club converge on the brewery rain or shine. See you there! Renew your membership and receive the 2015 BMWMCC Ride Book! Don t forget to bring a present for the Santa gift exchange! Gift Value $20.00. What is the Santa gift exchange? This is when everyone draws a number to determine the order of the gift exchange. The person who draws the first number opens the first gift of their choice from the gift pile. Before the second person opens his or her gift choice, they can decide to choose a gift from the gift pile or snatch the first person s opened gift. And, so on... A gift can only be regifted three times. This way, most people have a good chance of ending up with something they actually like and it is much more entertaining than just watching everyone open up one present. At the end of the process, the person who went first can, if he or she wishes, to exchange his or her gift for any other present, even those that have been regifted three times. It pays to be first - so come early! BMWMCC.org In the Wind 4

2015 Daytona 200 Not a MotoAmerica Race Friday, October 10, 2014 By Bart Madson The 2015 Daytona 200 will not be a part of the inaugural MotoAmerica road racing series. A Daytona International Speedway press release has announced it was unable to reach a sanction agreement with the MotoAmerica/KRAVE group for the historic race, which traditionally kicks off the AMA road racing season. The exclusion of Daytona is confirmed by MotoAmerica s tentative 2015 schedule, which opens at the Circuit of the Americas in tandem with the MotoGP round. The 2012 Daytona 200 finish, where Joey Pascarella bested Jason DiSalvo in the now defunct Daytona SportBike class. The history D200 will not be included in the inaugural 2015 MotoAmerica road racing series. The full DIS press release quotes Speedway President Joie Chitwood III and states: After having multiple discussions with MotoAmerica/KRAVE regarding a sanction agreement for 2015 Daytona 200, we were unable to find common ground on a business model that would be beneficial for both parties. We wish MotoAmerica/KRAVE the best as they begin their inaugural season in 2015. Daytona International Speedway will continue to be the driving force behind Bike Week, hosting a wide range of activities for all ages including the Daytona Supercross, the Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross and the AMA Pro Flat Track doubleheader, as well as demo rides, displays and vendors. We will continue to look for partners to assist in running the Daytona 200. The MotoAmerica/KRAVE group, led by former AMA and GP champion Wayne Rainey, took over the U.S. professional road racing series from the Daytona Motorsports Group in September. It recently announced the basic outlines for rules/class structure, including a premier Superbike class, Superstock 1000, Supersport and Superstock 600 support classes with two more support series expected. The Daytona round has long been an outlier in the AMA Pro Racing schedule. Coinciding with Daytona Bike Week, it is often run months before the second round of the series. The Daytona 200 is an even more exceptional event, being a 69-lap endurance race with pit stops rather than conventional sprint race. The Daytona Speedway s high-speed banking also places unique demand on tires, which restricted the D200 to the smaller-displacement Formula Xtreme and Daytona SportBike classes from 2005-2014. However, AMA Pro Racing had announced in February 2014 that the Daytona 200 would once again feature the AMA SuperBike class in 2015. The DIS statement claims it will still look for partners to run the D200, which would celebrate its 74th running in 2015. BMWMCC.org In the Wind 8
