The game against Albany will be Cornell s 11th NCAA tournament appearance in the last 12 seasons It will also be the 27th NCAA tournament appearance in school history, with the Big Red posting a 32-23 record with 13 Final Four appearances. Both teams won their conference titles, with Cornell earning a share of the Ivy League regular season crown for the third consecutive year, while the Great Danes have won three straight America East titles. The game will be the first in the history of the series to be played on either the Cornell or Albany campus, as both previous meetings have been neutral site games. The Big Red and Albany squared off earlier this season, a 16-9 win for Cornell, at the seventh annual Patriots Cup, held at SMU s Ford Field in Dallas, Texas. Prior to this season, Cornell and the Great Danes had met just once before, as the Big Red earned a 12-11 overtime victory in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Tournament held in Princeton, N.J. No. 6 Albany will be the eighth contest played against a nationally-ranked opponent for the Big Red this season. Cornell is 3-4 with wins over No. 6 Yale, No. 8 Albany, and No. 14 Princeton. The Big Red also defeated Colgate, which is ranked this week at No. 12, but was not ranked at the time of their meeting on March 17. Cornell has won its first round NCAA game and advanced to the quarterfinals seven times since 2004. The Big Red has won 20 consecutive games vs. the America East dating back to a 6-5 loss to UMBC during the 2001 season. Countdown to Face Off 10 With a team-high 61 points, Matt Donovan is just the 10th player in Cornell history to post at least 50 points in consecutive seasons. 9 In the first meeting with Albany this season, Christian Knight made 14 saves, including nine in the final quarter as the Big Red held off the Great Danes comeback bid. 8 The Big Red has held opponents to 25 or fewer ground balls eight times, while Cornell has picked up more than 25 ground balls in all 15 games. 7 Cornell has won seven consecutive home games dating back to the 2014 season. 6 With its 6-0 record on Schoellkopf Field, Cornell remains one of just six NCAA DI teams to be undefeated on its home field. The Big Red has posted 12 undefeated home slates since its first season on Schoellkopf Field in 1972. 5 Dan Lintner needs just five points to become the 41st player in Cornell history to record 100 career points. 4 Cornell has been the eighth seed in the NCAA Tournament just four times in its 27 appearances. 3 The Big Red is appearing in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, and its 11 tournament in the last 12 years. 2 Connor Buczek needs just two goals to become the second midfielder in Cornell history, and eighth in Ivy history, to record 40 goals in a single season... He will also become the first midfielder in Big Red history, and seventh in the history of the Ivy League, to record 40 goals in a season and 100 goals in a career. 1 Albany s Lyle Thompson and Cornell s Connor Buczek were both first round draft picks, going first and second, respectively, in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft. Both players were both taken by the Florida Launch. Saturday, May 9, 2015 12:00 p.m. Ithaca, N.Y. UALBANY: Cornell holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Albany, defeating the Great Danes in overtime of 2007 NCAA tournament quarterfinals, held in Princeton, N.J., as well as winning the match-up earlier this season in the seventh annual Patriot Cup held in Dallas, Texas. LOOKING AT THE GREAT DANES: Albany earned the automatic bid for the America East, bringing a 15-2 overall record (6-0 America East) and one of the most dominant offensive players in the country in Lyle Thompson into Saturday s contest. Thompson finished the America East championship game with nine points against Stony Brook to go over 100 points for the third consecutive year. But the team doesn t rely solely on Thompson, as Connor Fields and Seth Oakes will enter the weekend with 77 and 61 points, respectively. In the face-off circle, Connor Russell had taken the majority of draws for the Great Danes (102-of-193;.528) before suffering a season-ending injury. Since that time, Cason Liles has stepped into the circle and has been impressive, winning 93-of-173 chances for a.538 winning percentage. In goal, Blaze Riorden has started all 17 games and has posted a 9.64 goals-against average with a.556 save percentage. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. That was the longest stretch of consecutive games away from Ithaca since the 1953 team opened the season with a stretch of six games played at Baltimore, Duke, UNC, RPI, Syracuse and Hobart... Only three other teams in Division I have had roads swings of six or more games to open the season: 1) Marquette 10 games 2) Cornell, Canisius, Manhattan 6 games MLL DRAFT FACTS: Senior midfielder Connor Buczek was selected second overall by the Florida Launch in the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Draft becoming the Big Red s highest ranked draft pick since Rob Pannell was taken first overall by the New York Lizards in 2012. Cornell had a pair of third round selections in senior attackman Matt Donovan (18th Chesapeake Bayhawks) and senior defensemen Jordan Stevens. (21st Rochester Rattlers). Cornell was one of eight schools with three or more players drafted, but of those eight schools, only Notre Dame also featured a first round draft pick (Jack Near seventh overall). Since having a program-high five players selected in the 2007 MLL Draft, the Big Red has had multiple picks in five of the last nine drafts. In that same time frame, Cornell has had five first round draft picks, including one selection at No. 1 (Pannell), and two at No. 2 (Buczek and Max Seibald). ON THE WORLD STAGE: The Big Red had 10 former or current players suit up on the field at this past summer s 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, including junior Brennan Donville, Jesse Gamble 11 and Jason Noble 13, who took home the gold medal with Team Canada. Additionally, Mitch Belisle 07, Max Seibald 09, and Rob Pannell 13 earned silver with Team USA, while Myan Adams 13 won the bronze with the Iroquois Nation. Cornell also had two players with Israel Lacrosse (Coldy Levine 13 and Cole McCormack 14) and one with Team Sweden (Sten Jernudd 14). RECAPPING 2014: Under the direction of Interim Head Coach Matt Kerwick, the 2014 squad exceeded all expectations. Cornell was selected 17th overall in the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll, marking the first time since being tabbed 11th in 2003 that Cornell was chosen to finish outside the top 10. Once the Big Red season began on Feb. 22, the team rose in the USILA poll for four straight weeks before earning a No. 2 ranking on March 24. Altogether, the team stayed in the top 10 for five straight weeks. The Big Red opened the season with a 9-0 record and was the last undefeated team in the nation. The 9-0 start was the best by a first-year coach in Cornell history since Ned Harkness won 22 straight and the team finished with an 11-5 record overall and a mark of 5-1 in the Ivy League. The team won the Ivy League title and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it fell to national semifinalist Maryland on a goal scored with two seconds to play in the contest. Following the season, Cornell swept the major Ivy League awards with Connor Buczek and Christian Knight earning Player and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively. The Big Red also had seven All-Ivy selections, including four first-team honorees, and five All-Americans. UP NEXT: The winner of the first round game between Cornell and Albany will advance to meet the winner of the first round game between Notre Dame and Towson/High Point in a quarterfinal contest that will take place at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colo., on Saturday, May 16. Game time is slated for either 3 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. May 9, 2015 Page 8
