Chicago has played just seven home games, thanks in part to three postponements during the first homestand the seven home games are fewest in the majors, even fewer than Minnesota s eight home contests (the Twins have had four home postponements and played two home games in Puerto Rico). Thanks to their five postponements, the Cubs 21 games played are fewest in the National League and tied for the second-fewest in the majors with the White Sox the Twins have played just 19 games thus far. Chicago has won four of its last six games after dropping three of four, April 12-17. The Cubs are 11-10 in their first 21 games after starting last season 12-9 (and 12-10 through 22 games) en route to their second-straight N.L. Central Division title and third-straight appearance in the National League Championship Series the 2016 club was 16-5 through 21 games while the 2015 squad was 13-8. WE RE NOT INTO STREAKING : The Cubs are the only team in the majors this season to have neither a three-game losing streak or three-game winning streak the team started the season hitting every.500 mark en route to 9-9, something the club hadn t done since 2011 that Cubs squad hit the.500 mark every step of the way to 10-10, a major league record. BUT, SOMETIMES WE ARE: Chicago has recorded an extra-base hit in each of its last 42 games against the Brewers dating to April 26, 2016 that s tied for their secondlongest such streak against the Brewers (also done from 2006-08) and surpassed only by 62-straight games with an extra-base hit vs. Milwaukee spanning the 2010-14 seasons. Albert Almora Jr. enters today with a career-high eight-game hitting streak in which he s hitting.389 (14-for-36) with three doubles, a homer, five RBI and a.991 OPS. IN STYLE WITH KYLE: Kyle Hendricks 2.99 career ERA ranks fourth among all active pitchers with at least 100 starts, trailing only Clayton Kershaw (2.37), Jacob degrom (2.96) and Chris Sale (2.96) Kyle ranks ahead of Madison Bumgarner (3.01), Stephen Strasburg (3.07) and Corey Kluber (3.09). Hendricks.642 OPS against is fifth-lowest of any active pitcher with at least 100 starts and third lowest among right-handed pitchers overall he trails only Kershaw (.570), Strasburg (.624), Sale (.626) and degrom (.635). Cubs outfielders in 2017 combined to hit.253 with a.335 on-base percentage and a.423 slugging mark. GLOVE LOVE: Anthony Rizzo went a calendar year, and 150-straight games at first base, without committing an error prior to his throwing error last night in Cleveland that s the longest errorless streak for a Cubs first baseman since at least 1910. Since the start of his first full season with the Cubs in 2013, Rizzo leads major league first basemen with 683 assists while his 7,110 total chances rank second behind only Arizona s Paul Goldschmidt (7,189) Rizzo, who won a 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove, has a.995 fielding percentage in that span, fourth among N.L. first basemen. HIS LAST 11: Kyle Schwarber, who on Tuesday recorded his sixth career multi-homer game and first of 2018, is hitting.378 (14-for-37) with a double, four homers, 13 RBI, a.489 OBP, a.730 slugging percentage (good for a 1.219 OPS) in his last 11 games since April 10. Schwarber s two homers on Tuesday give him seven as a Cubs designated hitter, a franchise mark that surpassed Alfonso Soriano s six homers as DH for Chicago. Since he was recalled from Triple-A Iowa, July 6 of last season, Schwarber has delivered a.930 OPS with a.263 average (70-for-266) with 24 homers and 47 RBI in 85 games his 24 homers in that span are sixth-most in the N.L.. OUR BÁE(Z): Javier Báez on Tuesday drove in his 24th run of the young season, becoming just the sixth Cub since 1908 to knock in at least 24 RBI in the team s first 20 games he joins Hack Wilson (26 RBI in 1926), Frank Demaree (26 in 1937), Billy Williams (26 in 1970), Ernie Banks (24 in 1959 & 25 in 1966) and Hank Sauer (24 in 1954) thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. Báez, whose current eight-game hitting streak ties his career high done in June of last season, has clubbed seven homers to become the first Cubs second baseman since at least 1913 to reach seven homers before the end of April Ryne Sandberg (1996) and Rogers Hornsby (1931) each reached five homers before the end of April as second basemen Baez s 24 RBI are the most since 1913 by any Cubs second baseman before May 1. Báez leads the National League with 24 RBI, a.728 slugging percentage and a 1.099 OPS his seven homers lead all major league second basemen. Javier already has three triples this season, tied with Pittsburgh s Starling Marte, Oakland s Matt Chapman and Detroit s Jeimer Candelario for most in the majors overall, Báez has seen 17 of his 25 hits go for extra-bases this season (seven homers, three triples, seven doubles) the only Cub with more extra-base hits in March/April is Derrek Lee, who had 18 to begin the 2008 campaign. THIS IS OFFENSIVE: The Cubs lead the N.L. and are second in the majors by averaging 5.76 runs per game (the Yankees lead, 6.17) Chicago s.346 on-base percentage leads the N.L. and is third in baseball behind the Yankees (.355) and Athletics (.348), while its.432 slugging percentage also leads the Senior Circuit and is fourth in the majors behind the Yankees (.480), Red Sox (.455) and Athletics (.444). WHAT A RELIEF: The Cubs bullpen posted a 1.55 ERA (8 ER/46.1 IP) in its first 11 games of the season before surrendering four runs in 3.0 innings April 12 vs. the Pirates Chicago s 2.83 ERA (26 ER/82.2 IP) from its relievers is fourth-lowest in the N.L. (Arizona leads with a 1.84 ERA) Chicago s 82.2 innings from its bullpen are 19th-most in the majors the Angels relievers lead with 108.0 innings. Brandon Morrow (7.0 IP) and Brian Duensing (7.1 IP) are two of only three qualifying N.L. relievers yet to allow a run this season the Padres Phil Maton has not allowed a run in 9.1 innings. Carl Edwards Jr. is averaging 16.9 strikeouts per nine innings, sixth-best among N.L. relievers (Milwaukee s Josh Hader leads, 18.2). FEAST OR FAMINE: Chicago has batted.324 (136-for-420) and averaged 9.5 runs per game (104 runs) in 11 victories, but has hit just.181 (63-for-349) and averaged 1.7 runs per game (17 runs) in 10 losses Cubs hurlers have a 3.69 ERA (41 ER/100.0 IP) in the team s wins and a 4.45 ERA (46 ER/93.0 IP) in the setbacks.
