Women s Basketball 2010 UT-Arlington at Sam Houston State Saturday, January 23, 2010, - 2 p.m. Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum - Huntsville, Texas Radio: KHVL 1490 AM Sam Houston State Bearkats Record: 4-11, Southland 1-2 Head Coach: Brenda Welch-Nichols Alma mater: Sam Houston State, 1989 UT-Arlington Mavericks Record: 7-10, Southland 2-2 Head Coach: Samantha Morrow Alma Mater: Texas Wesleyan, 1998 BEARKATS LOOK TO PICK UP ANOTHER SOUTHLAND VICTORY After ending their eight-game losing streak in San Marcos last Wednesday, the Sam Houston State women play host to UT-Arlington Saturday at 2 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum. The Mavericks are Southland Conference defending co-champions, tying for the 2009 title with UTSA. UT-Arlington has won the Southland women s basketball title three of the last five years (2005, 2007 and 2009). The Mavericks are led by 5-8 Meghan Nelson who is averaging 16.6 points and 5-7 Tamara Simmons who is adding 11.0 points per contest. UT-Arlington owns a 7-10 season mark and stands 2-2 in the Southland race. Sam Houston enters the contest with a 4-11 season record and an 1-2 mark in Southland Conference play. The Bearkats held off a furious comeback by Texas State Wednesday. Down 21 points in the second half, the Bobcats rallied to cut the margin to three points in the final seconds. But Sam Houston hung on for the 85-81 victory. Six of the defeats during the eight-game losing streak came on a month-long road swing in which SHSU matched up with outstanding programs from the Southeastern, Big 12, Mountain West and Conference USA on some of their trips. BEARKAT-MAVERICK SERIES UT-Arlington leads the all-time women s basketball series with 37 victories to 12 for the Bearkats. The Mavericks have won the last 15 meetings between the pair including victories of 87-73 in Arlington and 83-65 in Huntsville last year. Sam Houston s last victory over UTA was a 72-62 victory in Huntsville in 2001. Brooks went 6-of-10 from three point range as she was one of two Bearkats in double figures. Whitney Smith added 12 for Sam Houston (4-11, SLC 1-2). Sam Houston never trailed in the game. The contest was tied once at 20-20 with 8:34 left in the first half. The Bearkats closed the period with a 23-14 run to lead 43-34 at intermission. The Kat women kept rolling early in the second half, eventually building a 21 point lead when Clarke Davis hit a jumper at 10:45 to put Sam Houston up 70-48. Paced by Ford, however, Texas State dominated at the end of the contest. The Bobcats outscored Sam Houston 33-14 in the final 10 minutes. A three-point basket by Ford with 12 seconds remaining cut the margin to 84-81. But that was as close as Texas State could come. www.gobearkats.com * Southland Conference game **Post-Season Tournament in Katy, TX #Cancun, Mexico Sam Houston Media Relations Paul Ridings Assistant AD for Media Relations Office: (936) 294-1764 Email: ridings@shsu.edu Jason Barfield Media Coordinator Office (936) 294-3533 Email: jbarfield@shsu.edu Press Row telephone: (936) 294-1838

SHSU finished tied for seventh place in final overall 2009 Southland standings, the Bearkats highest conference ranking since the 2000 Sam Houston squad was fourth in the Southland. The Bearkats posted league victories over Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Central Arkansas, McNeese and swept Texas State both home and away a year after going winless in the Southland. The team s 7-5 record at home in Johnson Coliseum marked Sam Houston s best season performance in the facility in the last 10 years. 40 YEARS OF WOMEN S BASKETBALL Sam Houston is celebrating 40 years of women s basketball this season. Women s basketball was the first women s intercollegiate sports team at the Huntsville campus. The program was started in 1969-70 by legendary University of Texas coach Jody Condradt who got her first head-coaching job at Sam Houston State. www.gobearkats.com - 3

Head Coach Brenda Welch-Nichols Brenda Welch-Nichols returned to her alma mater as head women s basketball coach on August 23, 2006. She previously was head coach for four years at Mercer University in Macon, GA. Nichols is a 1989 Sam Houston graduate, earning All-Southland Conference honors in both 1987 and 1988 in women s basketball. In her two seasons as a Bearkat, she averaged 17.8 points and 6.5 rebounds to rank 10th in SHSU women s career scoring with 923 points. She brought a 131-131 record to Sam Houston in 2006. Nichols built Mercer into a front-runner in the Atlantic Sun Conference. In 2006, the Bears reached the semifi nals of the conference tournament, losing by fi ve points in overtime after upsetting number three seed East Tennessee State in the fi rst round. The Bears reached the Atlantic Sun tournament in each of Nichols four seasons at Mercer and were 41-35 in league play. Her fi nal year at Mercer, the Bears posted non-conference victories over Pacifi c, Southern Mississippi, and New Orleans. While at Mercer, Nichols built a reputation as a community leader. Nichols was on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Middle Georgia, served as youth director at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and helped with area churches and day cares. She also served on the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Nichols has instituted numerous community outreach programs including Kat Chat, a public service effort by the Sam Houston State women s basketball team in which players visit local elementary schools to entertain and educate the youngsters. Players talk with area youngsters on topics that include academics, time management, study skills, sportsmanship, respect, setting goals, and healthy eating habits. Before arriving at Mercer, Nichols served as an assistant at South Alabama and Memphis. Before her move to Division I, Nichols spent fi ve seasons as a head coach in the junior college ranks. She spent three seasons at Okaloosa-Walton Community College, fi nishing with a 63-27 record and two second-place fi nishes in the Panhandle Conference. Her 1998-99 squad earned a national ranking as high as fi fth and a trip to the NJCAA Regional Tournament. Her fi rst head coaching job was at the school where she began her college career, Western Texas. She coached there for two seasons before moving to Okaloosa-Walton. Her fi rst coaching experience was at Pensacola Junior College where she served as an assistant for four seasons and helped lead the team to three conference titles in her four years there. Nichols began her collegiate career playing at Western Texas in 1985. She lettered two seasons for the Dusters, was named an NJCAA All-American and led her team to a fourth-place national fi nish.
