Rod Boykin delivered the game-winning hit to left-center field with the bases loaded and 1 out in the bottom of the ninth. Fort Wayne needed to rally after West Michigan scored the game s first run in the top of the eighth. Starting pitcher Hansel Rodriguez threw 6 scoreless. ROSTER MOVES: The Padres have transferred right-handed relievers Wilmer Torres and Lou Distasio to Extended Spring Training, while right-handed relievers Evan Miller and Will Stillman have been added to Fort Wayne s roster from Extended Spring Training. (See Pages 7-8 for more information on the new additions, who both pitched for the TinCaps last August and September.) MASTODON RETURNS: Evan Miller is back in the Summit City following a 2-year career with the Fort Wayne Mastodons at IPFW, and then pitching for the TinCaps late last season after being drafted by the Padres in the 22nd round in June. SCHOLTENS WAYNE TIE: Jesse Scholtens grew up in Fairfield, Calif., between San Francisco and Sacramento. But after spending his freshman year at Arizona and his sophomore year at Diablo Valley Community College (CA), Scholtens transferred to Wright State in Dayton. His pitching coach with the Raiders was Justin Parker, a 2005 graduate of Wayne High School. (Parker is now an assistant at UCF.) GIBSONS vs. FORT WAYNE: While the TinCaps take on West Michigan outfielder Cam Gibson, the Fort Wayne Komets will square off against Gibson s older brother, Kevin, tonight in the ECHL Playoffs (Cam is 23; Kevin is 27). Kevin is a defenseman for the Quad City Mallards. (The Komets lead the best-of-7 series 2-0.) Both are the sons of Kirk Gibson, whose resume includes winning the 1984 ALCS MVP with the Tigers, the 1988 MVP with the Dodgers, and the 2011 NL Manager of the Year with the Diamondbacks. LEADING THE LEAGUE: The TinCaps have drawn a Midwest League-leading 53 walks (4.4/game) TinCaps pitchers have a MWL -best 127 strikeouts (10.5/game). WHAT S ON THE LINE: The TinCaps have a chance to win a series for the first time this season, and also to win consecutive games for the first time in 2017. Contreras, 32, led the TinCaps to a 62-78 record in his first season as TinCaps manager. Contreras came to Fort Wayne after managing the Padres' Short-Season A affiliate, the Tri-City Dust Devils (Northwest League), in 2015. Contreras led Tri-City to a 42-34 record, a division title, and a run to the Northwest League Finals. Contreras made his professional managerial debut in 2014 with the Rookie-level Peoria Padres (Arizona League). Contreras, who grew up in San José, California, played collegiately for four years at San José State (2002-05). The San Francisco Giants selected Contreras in the ninth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. Over nine years in Minor League Baseball that peaked in Triple-A, he sported a.257 batting average. He played in San Diego's organization from June 2008-August 2013. With the Wizards, Contreras had one of the best statistical stretches of his career. In 36 second-half games, he played second base, third, and shortstop, and batted.304. Coincidentally, Contreras concluded his playing career with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League in 2013. Burt Hooton (Pitching Coach) returns to Fort Wayne and the Padres organization for his fifth season. Hooton, who once threw a no-hitter for the Cubs against the Phillies on April 16, 1972, spent 15 years in the majors with the Cubs (1971-75), Los Angeles Dodgers (1975-84), and Texas Rangers (1985). He finished his major league career with a 151-136 record with 1,491 strikeouts more than 2,652 innings pitched. For the World Series champion Dodgers in 1981, Hooton was named an All-Star and MVP of the National League Championship Series. The Greenville, Texas native began his coaching career in the Dodgers organization in 1988 and has made six different coaching stops prior to joining Fort Wayne. Among those stops, Hooton served as the Houston Astros pitching coach from 2000-04. Doug Banks (Hitting Coach) is in his first season as the hitting coach in Fort Wayne and his second season with the Padres organization. Last season, Banks was the hitting coach for the Rookie-Level Arizona League Padres and also spent time as an Amateur Scout for the Padres, covering Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah. The Texas native played collegiately at the University of Arizona and Abilene Christian University (Texas). Banks assisted the Texas Rangers' major league staff in various roles from 2008-11 and was an amateur scout for the Rangers from 2012-15. Page 11
