Currently, the Tribe is one of only five original Division I teams from 1948 that have never played in the NCAA Tournament along with Army, The Citadel, Northwestern and St. Francis (NY). - W&M would win its first conference championship game in its seventh try. The College lost chances to win league crowns in 1958 (Southern Conference), 1961 (Southern Conference), 1965 (Southern Conference), 1975 (Southern Conference), 1983 (ECAC South) and 2008 (CAA). - The Tribe would become the third No. 3 seed in the history of the CAA Tournament to win the championship, joining the 1998 Richmond squad and the 2008 George Mason team. - W&M would win its 23 game of the season and tie for second on the program s all-time wins list. The Tribe already owns the most wins for the program in 60 years. DÉJÀ VU For the second time in his career, senior guard David Schneider knocked down a gamewinning 3-pointer in the CAA Tournament. During the Tribe s memorable run to the CAA Championship Game in 2008, Schneider gave the College s its first win of the tournament with a 25-foot 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining as the College knocked off Georgia State, 58-57. All three of the Tribe s wins during the 2008 CAA Tournament run came on last second buckets, including one against Old Dominion in the quarterfinals. SCHNEIDER GAME-WINNERS David Schneider s 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining against Northeastern on Sunday marked the fourth time he has scored what proved to be the game-winner in the closing seconds this season. His 3-pointer against NU was his only field goal of the game. He hit the game-winning free throw with three seconds left in a 75-74 win over VCU on Dec. 5. Schneider s two 3-pointers in the final 12 seconds led W&M to a seven-point rally with 32 seconds remaining in a 73-72 overtime win at Drexel. At George Mason, Schneider scored on a driving lay-up with 58 seconds remaining for what proved to be the game-winner. BALANCE SCORING While the Tribe only scored 47 points as a team in the win over Northeastern and failed to place a player in double figures, the Green and Gold did turned in a solid all-around attack. Eight different Tribe players scored against NU, including six with at least six points. Senior Danny Sumner topped the squad with eight points, while senior Steven Hess, junior Marcus Kitts and sophomore Quinn McDowell each added seven points. Hess and freshman guard Matt Rum have had great efforts off the bench for the Green and Gold over the two days of the CAA Tournament. Hess is averaging 7.5 points on 77.8 percent shooting from the floor to go along with three rebounds per game in just 17.5 minutes. Rum hit for six points in the win over Northeastern, including a rare four-point play, after tallying a career-best five assists against James Madison. WWW.TRIBEATHLETICS.COM CAA CHAMPIONSHIP - VS. GAME NOTES TRIBE TOURNEY SUCCESS UNDER SHAVER No W&M head coach has enjoyed more success in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament than current Tribe headman Tony Shaver. In the 18 years prior to Shaver s arrival in Williamsburg, the College totaled two CAA Tournament wins. Over the last seven under his direction, the Green and Gold owns six league tournament wins, including the program s first two CAA Championship Game appearances in the last three seasons. WINNING CLOSE DOWN TO THE LAST POSSESSION W&M continued to demonstrate its grit and will to win, pulling out a narrow 47-45 semifinal win over Northeastern. It marked the College s 14th game decided by three or fewer points. The Tribe is no stranger to close games as evident by its 10-4 record this season in games decided by three points or less. Included in that 10-4 ledger is a 5-1 mark in one-point games. Eleven of the Tribe s 14 games decided by three or fewer points have come during the CAA portion of the schedule, including the CAA Tournament, and the College is 8-3 in those contests. DEFENSE LEADS TO VICTORIES Along with its success on the offensive end of the court, the Tribe s ability to defend has also been a key to success this season, and that was no more evident than in its semifinal win over Northeastern. The Tribe limited NU to a W&M season-low 45 points, while the Huskies shot just 34 percent overall from the floor. W&M also held Northeastern to a season-best 15.4 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Green and Gold is 10-1 this season when limiting to opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the floor and 9-1 when holding foes below 60 points. During head coach Tony Shaver s tenure, the Tribe is 41-15 when opponents shoot less than 40 percent against the College. Over the last three years, W&M owns a record of 26-3 when holding team below 60 points. In fact, this season seven players have double-digit 3-pointers made, while five of those players have at least 20 3-pointers made this season. The College is the only team in the CAA with five players that have at least 20 3-pointers made. Senior David Schneider leads the way with 90 triples followed by sophomore Quinn McDowell with 57. Senior Danny Sumner has connected on 40 treys, sophomore JohnMark Ludwick owns 33 threes and senior Sean McCurdy drilled 20 from long range. Compared to the Tribe s CAA Championship opponent, the Monarch s team leader in 3-pointers made is Ben Finney, and he would rank fifth on the Tribe with 32 made 3-pointers. I LOVE THIS PLACE Senior wing Danny Sumner enjoys playing in the Richmond Coliseum. Over the last three years, Sumner has played seven games in the Coliseum during the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. Over the last three seasons, Sumner is averaging 15.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in the Richmond Coliseum. He is shooting 47 percent (39-of-83) from the field and 37.8 percent (14-of-37) from 3-point range. On Saturday in the win over James Madison, Sumner scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and knocked down a career-high tying four 3-pointers, while shooting 9-of-18 from the floor. In the semifinals, Sumner led a balanced Tribe attack with eight points. During the 2008 CAA Championship, Sumner averaged 15.5 points per game, while shooting 47 percent from 3-point range in helping the Tribe to the title game on his way to CAA All-Tournament team honors. YOUTHFUL LEADERSHIP While the Tribe owns an experienced lineup with four senior captains, the Tribe also boasts arguably the youngest assistant coaching staff in the country. Tribe assistant coaches Ben Wilkins (31), Jonathan Holmes (29) and Jamion Christian (27) have an average age of 29. W&M head coach Tony Shaver, who won CAA Coach of the Year for the second time in three years, has credited his young staff for a good amount of the Tribe s success this season. Wilkins is in his fourth season with the Tribe, while Holmes and Christian are both in their second seasons. FOR STARTERS One of the more impressive facts for the Tribe and a big reason for its consistent performances and a record-setting season has been a consistent staring lineup. The quintet of seniors David Schneider, Danny Sumner and Sean McCurdy along with junior Marcus Kitts and sophomore Quinn McDowell have started all but two games for the Tribe this season. The lone exceptions were both senior Steven Hess starts in the place of Kitts. Hess started in place of an injured Kitts in the Tribe s win over Hofstra at home on Jan. 16 as well as his senior day start on Feb 23. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Senior forward Steven Hess celebrated his 23rd birthday on Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum and came through with some valuable minutes in the post for the Green and Gold. In 17 minutes of action, Hess scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, while adding three rebounds. DON T CALL IT A COMEBACK For the fourth time this season in the quarterfinal win over James Madison, W&M rallied from a double-digit deficit to pull out a victory. The Green and Gold trailed JMU by 14 points less than four and a half minutes into the second half, but rallied to pull out the triumph. The College scored 10 straight points to cut the deficit to four, before later going on a 16-2 run to completely erase the deficit and take its largest lead of the game at nine points with two minutes remaining. It marked the 10th time in head coach Tony Shaver s seven seasons at the helm that the Tribe has rallied from a double-digit deficit to pull out a victory. Earlier this season, W&M trailed VCU by 15 points in the second half, before rallying for a one-point win in Williamsburg. During the non-conference season, A-10 power Richmond held a 13-point first-half lead over W&M, before the Tribe came back to take a one-point halftime lead on the way to a seven-point triumph. Most recently, W&M trailed by 11 points at the half at George Mason, but pulled out a three-point road win. The College also trailed by nine points in the first half of road wins at Georgia State and Hofstra during the regular season. GAME NOTES WINNERS With its victory over Northeastern in the semifinals, the Tribe tallied its 22nd win of the season. It marks the third-highest total in school history. The 22 wins are the most for a W&M team in 60 years. The W&M school record for wins is 24 during the 1948-49 campaign, while the 1949-50 team followed with a 23-win season. RECORD FALLS With its 18 3-pointers made in the opening two game of the CAA Tournament, the Tribe not only bettered the school record for 3-pointers made, but tied the CAA mark as well. W&M surpassing the old mark of 257 set during the 2007-08 campaign against James Madison on Saturday. In the semifinals on Sunday, the Tribe tied the CAA league record of 270 held by the 2008-09 UNC Wilmington team. W&M s first 3-pointer against Old Dominion will establish a new league record. CHUCKING IT FROM DEEP W&M took 36 3-point field goal attempts during its CAA quarterfinal win over JMU. The 36 treys attempted bettered the single-game CAA Tournament record of 29 previously held by three teams, including the 2008 Tribe during the championship game against George Mason. The 11 3-pointers made against James Madison fell just one shy of the single game CAA Tournament record of 12 held by Richmond in both 1996 and 1997. DOUBLE-DIGIT TREYS The Tribe connected on double-digit 3-pointers for the 14th time this season in the quarterfinals against James Madison. The Tribe ranks 10th nationally in 3-pointers made at 8.8 per contest (as of March 4). During head coach Tony Shaver s seven-year tenure, the College has connected on double-digit treys 38 times overall. The Tribe is 24-14 under Shaver when connecting on 10 or more threes in a game. Of those 38 games, 29 have come over the last three years with W&M posting a 20-9 record. TAKING CARE OF THE LEATHER W&M has done a masterful job of taking care of the basketball in 2009-10 and the CAA Tournament has been no different. In the two games, W&M is averaging 7.5 turnovers per game, which means the College is maximizing its offensive possessions. Against JMU, the College only turned the ball over five times against the Dukes and just once in the second half. It was also the fourth time in which the College had five or fewer turnovers in a game. For the 17th time this season, W&M Tribe turned the ball over 10 or fewer times with its 10 against Northeastern. As of March 4, the Tribe ranked ninth nationally in the NCAA rankings in turnover average. The College only averages 10.8 turnovers per game. Along with its success in limiting turnovers, W&M leads the CAA and ranks among the national leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio. The College s ratio of 1.3 ranks 27th nationally as of March 4. SEEING 20-20 Seniors David Schneider and Danny Sumner finished with 23 and 22 points, respectively, and led the Tribe s second-half rally against James Madison. It marked the third time this season in which two Tribe players scored in 20 or more points in the same game. The first two times it was Schneider and sophomore Quinn McDowell. The pair pulled the trick at Radford and in a home win over Hofstra. Schneider and Sumner scored 20 or more points in the same game on five occasions last season. SECOND-HALF HEADLINERS Seniors David Schneider and Danny Sumner did the majority of their damage during the Tribe s second-half rally in the CAA quarterfinal. The pair combined for 32 of the Tribe s 46 second-half points and in the process matched the scoring output of James Madison, who also scored 32. Sumner scored 18 of his season-high 22 points in the second half, while Schneider scored 14 of his 23 points in the second frame and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the second 20 minutes. Sumner hit on seven of his 11 attempts from the floor in the second half, including all four of his 3-point field goals. SENIORS LEADERS The senior quartet of Steven Hess, Sean McCurdy, David Schneider and Danny Sumner are not only the Tribe s captains for the 2009-10 season, but have carried their fair share of the work load during one of the best season s in W&M history. The quartet has scored 51.5 percent (1075 of 2088) of W&M s points this season. In the quarterfinal win over James Madison, the foursome scored 55 of the Tribe s 70 points (78.6 percent) in leading the College to a comeback win. Along with the game against NU in the semifinals, W&M seniors have scored 67.5 percent of the Tribe s points in the CAA Tournament.
