YQCA YQCA is required for all youth that are planning to exhibit Beef, Dairy, Goat, Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep and Swine at the Guthrie County Fair or Iowa State Fair. Here are some things you ll need to know. 1. Your current FSQA testing will remain effective until the expiration date. 2. All YQCA trainings are available on line, for a cost of $12 per 4-H er. 3. YQCA must be completed by May 1st. 4. You must turn in your completed certificate to the Extension Office by May 1st. 5. There is a helpsheet that walks you through the entire YQCA process available online at https:// www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/agriculture/yqca/yqcawebbasedmemberinstructions.pdf A Few Fair Updates 1. Swine Weigh-in/Tagging: The Livestock Committee has decided to not have a centralized weighin. A. Youth will need to pick up tags from the office and tag their own pigs. The office does have taggers available. If a pig is not weighed, youth will need to enter their own pigs into 4hOnline by May 15th. B. Derby Class Pigs - you ll need to have your pig weighed on April 27th by contacting either your club leader and/or a swine com mittee member. Pigs will need to weigh under 52 lbs on April 27th to be eligible for the Derby Class. Leaders/swine Committee members will sign off and turn in forms to Mollie at the Extension Office. Mollie will enter forms when she receives them and youth are able to verify the information is correct as in prior years. 2. The Youth Committee is NOT doing a Bucket of Junk Fundraiser this year. 3. We will be offering a preview show on July 13th for all breeding and market beef, sheep, goats and swine. The show will start at 10 am at the Showring. The winners of this show (2 from each species; 1 breeding and 1 market) will represent Guthrie County in the DMACC Beardown. This is an optional show. Details are still being worked out so look for future updates! 4. We will be having FAIR SHIRTS! Each exhibitor will get a shirt to wear for free at the fair. That being said, the office still has some shirts available if you need an extra. Foundation News Clubs, individuals and/or groups can apply for matching project grants through the foundation. The application can be found on our website. Individuals that are wanting to attend camps, CWF, conference and more have the option to write a paragraph to the Committee about what they hope to learn from their event and might be able to get some reimbursement. 3

4-H Camps and Opportunities Save the Date: CAMP WILD June 8-10, 2019 Take a ride on the "WILD side and mark your calendars to attend Camp Wild, June 8-10, 2019 at Camp Clover Woods near Madrid, Iowa. Camp Wild is offered for youth completing grades 5, 6, and 7 in Spring 2019. Experience adventure and excitement during three days filled with 4-H camp traditions and favorite activities, including nature hikes, challenge course, creek walk, rock wall, archery, swimming, camp songs, crafts, and campfires. Bring a friend with you and make new ones while you are there too! Camp will run from Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. until our closing ceremony, starting at 3:15 p.m. on Monday, June 10. Registration will open online soon. Registration Deadline will be May 15, 2019. Register before May 1, 2019 to secure your spot and receive our $200 registration early bird price, $230 for non-4-h youth. Registration costs $220 after May 1 and before May 15, $250 for non-4-h youth. Make sure to check with your County Extension Office, as many have financial assistance for 4-H members attending camp! Scholarships are also available from the Iowa 4-H Foundation, applications can be submitted at anytime but will be evaluated beginning May 1 and then on a rolling basis. Visit www.iowa4hfoundation.com for information or to apply. Are you a 4-Her or an FFA member who participates in the Poultry events at fair? Are you between the ages of 16 to 21? Do you want to share your knowledge of the poultry industry with others? If you answered YES to these questions, then we would like you to apply to be the next Iowa Poultry Queen. The Iowa Poultry Queen serves from March to March. The duties are as Follows: Represent and share about the Poultry and Egg industry of Iowa; To attend the county fairs in your area. Past queens have attended any where from 5 to 20 county fairs. Represent your industry and share your knowledge in the community; Speak at events approved by the board/council; Be present for the Iowa State Fair poultry shows. Attend other related poultry and egg sponsored events at the Iowa State Fair such as Egg Rolling Contest, Help hand out egg on a stick for the Iowa Egg Council, Egg/poultry events at the Ellwell Food Center, Chicken calling contest and rubber chicken throwing contest at pioneer Hall. You will receive: A crown and sash; Parking pass during the poultry events at the Iowa state Fair, and passes for those days of the fair. To apply: Send a resume about yourself and your participation in the poultry industry/events. This may be as many pages as needed to share your experience; An essay about the Poultry Industry in Iowa. (Minimum 2 pages); Two 4x6 photos of yourself. Entries are due March 15 th, 2019. 2019 Guthrie County Summer Rabbit Hopping & Agility Membership is open to any Guthrie County members of Clover Kids, 4-H, or FFA. Membership is FREE this year to all Youth! Rabbit Hopping classes will be held at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds in the 4-H Center from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on the following dates: Monday, June 10 Monday, June 17 Monday, June 24 Monday, July 1 Monday, July 15 Monday, July 29 Monday, August 12 Monday August 19 Members will be asked to attend at least 4 of the 8 class dates to participate in the Rabbit Hopping & Agility Fun Show. The Show is scheduled for Sunday, September 1st, at 7:00 pm in Teen Town during the Guthrie County Fair. Rules to Hop: 1. Members should come prepared to have fun. This is not a competition, but a way to spend time and bond with your animal. 2. A 4-Class rabbit must be AT LEAST 4 months old before training to jump. Examples of 4-Class Rabbit breeds are Polish, Mini Lop, Mini Rex, and Netherland Dwarf. 3. A 6-Class rabbit must be AT LEAST 6 months old before training to jump. Examples of 6-Class Rabbit breeds are Californian, Checkered Giant, Flemish Giant, and New Zealand. 4. Never train a rabbit to jump that is overweight, pregnant, or has given birth within the last 3 months. 5. Rabbits must have a well-fitting harness and 6 foot leash. H-style harnesses are made especially for rabbits and are not available at local pet stores. The D-Ring for the harness must be at the back edge of the harness, not near the head of the rabbit. 6. Practice for any rabbit will be limited to 15 to 20 minutes. 7. Never shout or yell at your rabbit, shove or push your rabbit, pull on your rabbit with your hand, or the harness. Never use your feet to direct your rabbit. 8. Members will be responsible for cleaning up the area around their carriers, prior to departure, and cleaning up debris their animal leaves on the mats. 7

Guthrie County 4-Hers Give Back! We will be hosting a day of service on June 19th. We will be making tie blankets, hospital care kits, bed time bags, military care packages, braided dog toys and door decorations. More information coming soon! Collecting Pop Tabs We are still collecting pop tabs in Jacy McAlexander s memory. Jacy was a Calhoun County 4-H member who recently lost his battle with Ewing s Sarcoma cancer. Jacy s dad, Earl, is our Youth Program Specialist that you ll see on static day and throughout the fair. 8
