4 The English News Weekly Podcast Jaime Selwood 2017 Listening / Reading Listening The World s First Ship Tunnel! Three Words Help Listen / Read the news story below and check your understanding. Choose the correct word from the three choices! 287 The World s First Ship Tunnel! 1 Some of the world s most 1: extraordinary/surprising/weird engineering feats have been because of the need to create quicker routes for ships. In 1869 the Suez Canal opened and connected the 2: Mediterranean/Adriatic/Cyprus Sea with the Persian Gulf whilst in 1914 the Panama Canal allowed ships to cut from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Now more than 100 years later Norway is proposing to build another engineering marvel the world s first ship 3: canal/tunnel/waterway. 2 The 1.7 km long, 36 metre-wide tunnel will pass through the narrowest section of the Stad peninsula in Western 4: Sweden/Finland/Norway. This will allow passenger and freight ships to cut out the stormy, exposed and hazardous Stadhavet Sea. The area is one of the 5: windy/stormiest/rainy in northern Europe with up to 106 blusterous days per year. Other dangers in the area include very high waves and the added 6: peril/danger/temperature of strong winds blowing in different directions simultaneously. 3 To create the tunnel engineers will need to blast eight million tons of rock at a total cost of 297m. When finished it is projected that up to five ships will be able to pass through the Stad Ship Tunnel every 7: week/day/hour. Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and use of the tunnel will be free for any vessel that is less than 8: 70/80/90 metres long. 4 Plans for the new ship tunnel have been floated for several years but only in the last few months have the finances been available to start excavating the tunnel. Ketil Solvik-Olsen, Norway s 9: Health/Transport/Prime Minister said, We are pleased that the ship tunnel will now become a reality and that travel time between Norwegian cities and towns in the area will be 10: increased/deduction/reduced. 5 Although the new Stad Ship Tunnel will save vessels hours off their sailing time, it will still be a long way short of the achievements of the Suez and Panama Canals. When the Suez Canal first opened in 11: 1869/1879/1889 the waterway saved ships a 7,000 km route around the coast of Africa. Similarly when the Panama Canal first started to operate in 1914 ships reduced their journeys by 12,669 km by avoiding having to sail right around the coast of South America. If you do want to sail through the tunnel you are going to have to wait a little as it is going to take about 12: 5/10/15 years to build END OF PART 3 [387 Words]
