Reed Meade County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development - Education Welcome Eliza! Eliza Green is a Junior at the University of Kentucky, studying to get a dual degree in animal sciences on the Pre-Veterinary track and Career and Technical Education. She is from Hardin County where she lives with her mother and two younger siblings on an 18 acre hobby-farm with their six horses, three goats, a donkey, and a miniature pony. She currently holds the executive team position of first vice president of the professional agriculture sorority, Sigma Alpha is the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment Student Council Representative for the Pre-Vet Club, and is a member of the university s livestock club, Block and Bridle. Along with being involved in various clubs on campus, Eliza is a member of the Lewis Honors College, and enjoys volunteering for organizations like FoodChain Lexington, Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom, and Girls on the Run. When she has free time, Eliza enjoys riding her horses and competing in Extreme Cowboy Racing with her family. While working with 4-H is a new experience for Eliza, she has enjoyed her time so far, looks forward to upcoming events, and has felt very welcomed by the office and the community. 2017 Camp Orientation Attention all 4-H Campers and Counselors! The 2017 4-H Summer Camp Orientation sessions will be held on Monday, June 19 & Tuesday, June 20 th at 6:00 pm both nights. Every camper and counselor is required to attend ONE of these two dates! Please call the office, 270.422.4958, and RSVP for the night that you be will be attending. You will be receiving a detailed letter in the mail also regarding this mandatory camp orientation meeting! 2017 4-H Poster Contest Results Meade County 4-H had a wonderful showing of 4-H posters this year! Congratulations to all of our participants on a job well done. We had three participants move on to the district level and ONE member won for the 5 th grade level at district. GREAT JOB! Here are the results: 4 th grade: Connor Benham (Blue/County Champion), Aries Jolly (Blue), Brianna Hacker (Blue), Macy Barr (Blue), Alyssa Warren (Blue), John Banks (Blue) and Laynee Hoskins (Blue) 5 th grade: Lane Martin (Blue/County & District Champion), Mary Brooke Stith (Blue), Savannah Hinkleman (Blue), Makenzy Ibrom (Blue) 6 th grade: Katherine Ashmore (Blue/County Champion), Lilliana Carter (Blue), Julia Jones (Red) Clover Bud Day Camp, June 8, 2017 There are still spaces available for this summer s 4-H Clover Bud Day Camp. This day is strictly for youth, ages 5-8. Teen volunteers, ages 14-18 are needed to help email Deana (deanakreed@uky.edu) if you are interested!! Our day will be filled with FOOD, FUN & FAIR! The cost is $10 which includes all project materials AND lunch! Photography Day Camp Friday, July 7 th from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Do you like taking selfies? What about other types of photos? During this day camp, you will learn basic photography skills while taking photos of things around you. Participants must bring their own camera and cord for connecting to a computer to download and print photos. All projects completed will be eligible to enter in the 4-H Department at the Meade County Fair! We will hold onto your completed project AND enter it into the fair for you! A detialed flyer and registration form is included with this newsletter. 4-H Day at the Meade County Farmers Market July 15 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm - Come and visit the Meade County Farmers Market, buy some delicious local produce and other items! Meade County 4-H will have a booth this day to promote our program and to answer questions about what it means to be a 4-H member and what is available in the upcoming program year! Volunteers are welcome to come and assist in hosting the booth. State 4-H Communication Day Contest Volunteer judges are needed to serve in the roles of speech and/or demonstration judge or room host at the 2017 KY 4-H Communication Day contest held on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The contest will take place on Saturday, July 8 th. Please contact Deana at the Meade County Extension Office if you are interested in volunteering for this state-level event! 4-H Council The next 4-H Council meeting will be held on Monday, July 17 th at 6:00 pm. Any 4-H parent is invited to attend this meeting to learn more about the overall 4-H program and how you can become involved on this decision-making team. 4-H Volunteers NEEDED Could it be YOU? Become a 4-H Volunteer today and help create life-changing experiences for youth in Meade County! We are currently seeking 4-H Volunteers to fill the following roles for the 2017-2018 program year starting in September: Horse Club leader(s), Shooting Sports club leader(s), Sewing project leader(s), Needlework project leader(s), Quilting project leader(s), Fine Arts project leader(s) and Photography project leader(s). All volunteers must complete a volunteer application and successfully pass all background checks. Please contact the Extension Office to receive an application and to talk to Deana about volunteering.

It s time to be thinking about 4-H Fair Entries All exhibits (except livestock) to be entered Thursday, July 20, beginning at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Friday, July 21 beginning at 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Location to be announced. Judging will take place on Friday, July 21. Project pick up day AFTER the fair will be held on Sunday, July 30 from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at the 4-H building on the fairgrounds. Fair entry information is available NOW and can be found on our website under the 2017 4-H Fair Projects and Food Projects tabs: https://meade.ca.uky.edu/content/4-h-youth-develpment. Livestock Skill-a-thon Event This event is for livestock club members only as a part of their project for the current program year. 2017 Livestock & Horse Volunteer Certification Workshops Announced To attend a volunteer certification workshop to become a certified volunteer for Meade County, you must first complete the volunteer application process and be an approved Meade County Volunteer. All applications for the volunteer certification workshops must be processed through the Meade County office the county deadline is two weeks prior to the State 4-H Office deadline stated below. Applications are available at the Extension office or on our website: https://meade.ca.uky.edu/content/4-h-grows-here. (40 lodge rooms are available in our block - plus cottages.) $66.95 /lodge room; single or double occupancy. ($2.00 Park resort fee included in this rate) December 2, 2017 General Butler State Resort Park 1608 Highway 227 Carrollton, KY 41008 866-462-8853 Registration due by November 3 (in hand State 4-H Office) Lodging rooms must be reserved by October 30 to guarantee the group rate. (33 lodge rooms are available in our block plus cottages). $71.95 /lodge room; single or double occupancy. ($2.00 Park resort fee included in this rate) Registration Fee: $105.00 per person OR $115.00 per person for both horse and livestock Registration includes lunch, break, meeting facilities fees, materials, curriculum, user fees and surcharges. Workshops begin at 8:00 am on Saturday and end no later than 4:30 pm on Saturday, local time. Registration is limited to 60 total volunteers per session. ***YOU MUST BE PRESENT FOR THE ENTIRE WORKSHOP TO BECOME CERTIFIED.***

Total Solar Eclipse Camp Kentucky 4-H has the opportunity to experience a Total Solar Eclipse! This is a major world-wide event and the West Kentucky 4-H Camp sits in the premier viewing area. This once-in-a-lifetime event looks to be spectacular! Scientist from all over the world are planning to be in the Western Kentucky area! Make plans now - limited space! FAQ s What does it cost? (Assistance is available) $250.00 includes lodging, meals, all activities, excess medical, T-shirt, and solar glasses. What ages can attend? Ages 9+ (Camp Age) How do I reserve a slot?

BBQ Day Camp Everyone loves a delicious meal cooked on a BBQ grill, but not everyone knows how to or likes to cook on a grill whether it is powered by gas or charcoal. On Thursday, July 6 th, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, a 4-H Chicken BBQ Grilling day camp will be held at the Meade County Extension Office. This day camp is for youth, ages 9-18 and costs only $7.00; there are only 20 spots available and will be filled on a first -come, first-serve basis and the final registration deadline is June 29, 2017. Participants will learn: nutrition and the nutritional value of chicken, how to barbeque chicken safely, how to make their own BBQ sauce from scratch, proper hand washing and sanitation procedures, meal planning and proper dining etiquette. Chicken, grills, charcoal and BBQ equipment will be provided. Participants will be BBQing their own lunch. Flyer and registration information is included in this newsletter.
