TEAM NOTES NUMBER 8 DECAL Duke dons an 8 decal on the back of its helmets to recognize sophomore WR Blair Holliday, who was injured in a watercraft accident on July 4. Holliday spent over one month at UNC Hospitals before being transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga., where he stayed until being released on Friday, August 31. He continues to be a patient at the Shepherd Center. DUKE ON PACE FOR SCORING RECORD The Blue Devils average 31.9 points per game, which would rank as the third highest scoring average in school history. The Blue Devils have scored at least 30 points six times, already the third most 30-point games in school history. The 1988 and 1989 teams, coached by Steve Spurrier, posted seven 30-point games in back-to-back seasons. Duke has topped the 40-point mark three times in, tied for the fourth most in school history. Duke has scored 30 or more points 22 times during the David Cutcliffe Era, including in six of eight games this season. W, 33-30 BLUE DEVILS BECOME BOWL-ELIGIBLE Following a 33-30 win over North Carolina in week eight, Duke became bowl eligible for the fi rst time since 1994. At 6-2, Duke is off to its best start under fi fth-year head coach David Cutcliffe and the program s best start since 1994. Duke was the ACC s second team to become bowl eliglble this season. became the fi rst, doing so just before Duke in week eight, while Florida State earned its sixth win that same week. Duke is 3-5 all-time in bowl games. Cutcliffe, who has coached in 22 bowl games in his career, is 4-1 (.800) in bowl games as a head coach. He led Ole Miss to wins in the Cotton Bowl (2003) and Independence Bowl (1998, 1999, 2002), and an appearance in the Music City Bowl (2000). SEASON STARTS With a 6-3 record (.667) Duke is off to its best start in fi ve seasons under head coach David Cutcliffe. It is only the 12th time since ACC inception in 1953 that a Duke team has started 6-3 or better. It is the program s best start since the 1994 team opened 8-1. With the 33-30 week-eight win over North Carolina, Duke won at least six of its fi rst eight games for only the 20th time in school history. Of the 20 previous Duke teams to start 6-2 or better, none fi nished with a winning percentage lower than.667. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE The Blue Devils have compiled a 5-0 record at Wallace Wade Stadium this year, matching the school record for home victories in a season. Duke also won fi ve home tilts in 1930, 1932, 1933, 1943, 1974, 1989 and 1994. * Duke is averaging 42.6 points per game at home, compared to just 13.3 points per contest in its three road games. Duke has now scored 213 points in its fi ve home games in, the highest fi ve-game home total in school history. FOURTH-QUARTER WINS Duke has won two games in the fourth quarter this season, marking the 20th time in school history that the Blue Devils have put together game-winning drives in the fourth quarter. This season, Duke has put together fourth-quarter victories against Wake Forest (34-27) and North Carolina (33-30). Against Wake Forest, Duke entered the fourth quarter tied 20-20 before backup QB Anthony Boone engineered two TD drives in the eventual 34-27 win. Against North Carolina, Duke trailed 30-26 with 3:12 remaining before QB Sean Renfree led an 87-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a fi veyard touchdown pass from Renfree to WR Jamison Crowder on 4th-and-2 with 13 seconds remaining. Duke has won six games in the fourth quarter under fi fth-year head coach David Cutcliffe, including two in. Those six game-winning drives have been led by three different quarterbacks. UNIQUE DUKE-CLEMSON GAMES Duke and have played several unique games over the course of their series: On October 16, 1976, Duke s Vince Fusco booted a school-record six fi eld goals in an 18-18 tie. Fusco s six fi eld goals cover 27, 22, 22, 25, 37 and a schoolrecord 57 yards. On September 30, 1989, Duke faced a 1-3 record and was given a one in a million chance of winning by head coach Steve Spurrier, but the Blue Devils rallied for a 21-17 win over No. 7, for the fi rst of seven consecutive wins en route to the ACC title. Billy Ray s seven-yard touchdown pass to Chris Brown with 3:18 remaining in the game proves to be the difference. Duke would go on to defeat Army, Maryland,, Wake Forest, N.C. State and North Carolina to close the regular season. On November 30, 1991, and Duke played in front of 50,000 spectators at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, with the Tigers posting a 33-21 win thanks to 391 rushing yards and a 26-point fourth quarter. On November 8, 1997, the Blue Devils and Tigers played the fi rst overtime game involving two ACC schools. won the contest, 29-20, and the nine-point difference still stands as the largest point difference in an overtime game in ACC history. On December 1, 2001, the two squads played at Wallace Wade Stadium with winning, 59-31. The game had originally been scheduled for September 15, but was shifted following the series of attacks on the United States on September 11. On November 13, 2004, Duke K Matt Brooks booted a 53-yard fi eld goal to lift the Blue Devils to a 16-13 win over. The win is one of two in Duke history that the Blue Devils won on the fi nal snap from scrimmage, joined only by a 30-28 victory over Maryland on October 5, 1968 when David Pugh connected on a 27-yard fi eld goal. NON-OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS Duke has registered four non-offensive TDs in, via interception return (2), punt return (1) and blocked fi eld goal return (1), matching the sixthhighest total in school history. The school standard for non-offensive touchdowns is six, set in 1994. In the 56-game David Cutcliffe Era, the Blue Devils have posted 14 non-offensive touchdowns via interceptions return (6), fumble return (6), punt return (1) and blocked fi eld goal return (1). CAPABLE BACKUPS Duke has depth at the QB position with redshirt sophomore Anthony Boone backing up Renfree. Boone played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman and has appeared in every game of, completing 49-of-91 (.538) passes for 531 yards, fi ve touchdowns and two interceptions. Boone made his fi rst career start in week six versus Virginia and threw for four touchdowns. On the year, he has rushed 25 times for 88 yards (3.5 ypc) and two touchdowns. Boone led Duke to wins in backto-back weeks against Wake Forest (34-27) and Virginia (42-17) after taking over for starter Sean Renfree, who suffered an arm injury. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Connette is also available at QB in addition to his role as a WR and TE. Connette has played in 22 games with 14 rushing TDs, one passing TD, one receiving TD and 179 passing yards on 14 completions. BOONE SHINES IN STARTING DEBUT Redshirt sophomore QB Anthony Boone made his fi rst career start in week six versus Virginia in place of injured starter Sean Renfree. Boone completed 18-of-31 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns to match Dave Brown s record for most TD passes in a starting debut. The game signaled the second straight win for Boone as the primary quarterback. He entered the week fi ve game against Wake Forest in the third quarter with the score tied 20-20 and engineered two touchdown drives in the eventual 34-27 win. For his career, he averages a touchdown for every 7.86 rushing attempts. Connette is one of seven players in the country who has a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown this season. Connette, who missed the fi nal 10 games of with a shoulder injury, has fi ve rushing TDs, one receiving TD and one passing TD. He has been responsible for two touchdowns in a game three times through Duke s fi rst six games. Simmons was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after playing all 91 offensive snaps and paving the way for a running game that totaled 234 yards and two touchdowns on 53 carries. Simmons also protected Renfree, who gave up just one sack. Duncan was named ACC Rookie of the Week after rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown on a team-high 22 carries. Those three give Duke seven total ACC Player of the Week recipients. The other offensive player to earn an ACC nod was senior WR Conner Vernon, who was named ACC Receiver of the Week on Sept. 4 following Duke s 46-26 win over FIU in the season opener. Vernon hauled in 10 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown in that victory, becoming Duke s all-time leader in receptions in the process. VERNON LEADS ALL ACTIVE RECEIVERS Vernon leads all active FBS receivers in both career receptions and career receiving yards. The 6-1, 200-pound senior owns career totals of 252 receptions for 3,436 yards. Vernon surpassed 3,000 career receiving yards in week four versus Memphis to become only the second receiver in Duke history to reach that milestone. SCOTT MAKES THE SWITCH TO WR Senior Desmond Scott switched from RB to WR for his fi nal season as a Blue Devil. Through eight games, the transition has been smooth with Scott amassing 45 receptions for 453 yards with averages of 5.0 receptions and 50.3 yards per game. Scott had his top game at the position against Wake Forest, setting a career high with 134 receiving yards on a career-high matching 11 receptions. A native of Durham, N.C., Scott has played in 38 career games with 19 starts at RB and eight at WR. He has rushed for 1,159 yards and six touchdowns on 262 attempts (4.42 ypc) while also catching 122 receptions for 1,001 yards (8.2 yards per reception). Scott has at least one reception in 35 consecutive games in which he has played and multiple receptions in 17 of those games. SCOTT JOINS 1,000-1,000-1,000 CLUB Scott joined an elite club in week nine when he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards to become only the third player in ACC history to post at least 1,000 rushing, receiving and kickoff return yards.
