At Girls on the Run I learned to be confident, caring, to pace myself and to BE ME! Sofia, 4th Grade
Girls on the Run is a transformational, experiential learning program for 3rd 5th grade girls that combines training for a 3.1 mile (5k) running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. Our goal is to educate and empower preteen girls to prevent the display of at-risk activities (substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early onset of sexual activity, sedentary lifestyle, depression, suicide attempts, confrontations with the juvenile justice system). Girls on the Run reaches girls between the ages of 8-12, when they are just beginning to face the challenges of early adolescence but are still receptive to adult influence. Girls complete the program with a stronger sense of identity, a greater acceptance of themselves, a healthier body image, and a greater likelihood to continue healthy exercise habits. 1 1. DeBate RD. What the coaches say... Many of the girls have shocked us and have really opened up within the group. We have had many weeks where true social bravery was exhibited within the group conversations and personally, it has been beyond inspiring to me. When I personally leave a Girls on the Run session, I am in a wonderful mood. When I slow down and get quiet and really process the experience I have just had, I find myself becoming inspired by the girls I teach each week. Their bravery and persistence guides me now each day and I strive to keep the positive energy within me. What makes me really happy is that the girls talk about Girls on the Run and our lessons outside of our meetings. For example, during health class, the teacher talked about how we neglect our heart during the winter months as we don t move as much. Immediately the three girls that participated in Girls on the Run raised their hands and talked about the program. Also, the school counselor told me about how she had girls talk to her about Girls on the Run. After only three meetings, I was so happy to see how much impact it already seemed to make on those girls. One of my favorite moments was with Shayla: When we had our body image lesson, she couldn t bring herself to say anything positive about her body. For the next few days we worked on replacing negative self talk with positive messages. On the fourth day she came to me on her own and said to me Ms. Sandra, my eyes are beautiful. I almost cried. These are the moments we are all working for.
Being me is great, no one else can be like me. I shouldn t try to be like anyone else. Tanya, age 10 I learned to never give up, ever. Emma, age 10 I run my life! Alexa, age 8 What the girls say... I learned that I am important. Rachel, age 10 I am the boss of my brain. Amanda, age 8 I learned to deal with bullies and not to gossip. Taylor, age 12 Girls on the Run makes me feel warm and good on the inside. Sarah, age 9 I learned to work together as a team and give hope to my friends. Lily, age 11 Coach Michelle makes me feel good about myself. Cara, age 9
