CELEBRATING 13 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association July 2006 FROM THE PRESIDENT So many think that Florida is too hot to golf in the summer time. However, did you know that there is usually a nice breeze blowing to keep the sweat beads from mounting? Also, you can get some real bargains this time of year. Check out the following websites for some real deals: Teetime.com Golfcard.com Ezlinks.com Golf727.com Paradiseteetimes.com Teebone.com Teetimewatch.com Others? There are a lot of events going on in Tampa with our singles golf organization. Are you taking advantage of them? Better yet, are you volunteering to help or coming up with some ideas for activities that you would like to see offered and maybe even get one going? We have a great chapter in Tampa Bay! Here is another question are you helping our organization grow? We offer a LOT of events. If you keep track of the membership numbers in the monthly newsletter, you will see that membership numbers are down the past couple of years. There are a lot of reasons for this, I am sure. However, it is the responsibility of everyone in our group to invite our friends, relatives, and associates to our outings and/or monthly meetings. Does it stop there? No We each need to make guests feel welcome when they are visiting. We need to introduce them to other members and not let them sit by themselves; we need to invite them to become members; we need to give them information on upcoming events and how much we would like them to be a part of our fun group of golfers; we need to be careful not to give an impression that we are clicky or picky within our membership or make an unfavorable impression; we need to have good golf etiquette with our golf partners. We have from 7-10 guests coming each month. We should be converting at least 30% of them to new members. We have a new membership chair, Francis Davanza. He has been given a mission to find out why guests choose not to join ASGA. Hopefully, it is not because they don t feel welcome. Many reasons are given age group, too busy now to participate, etc. The bigger reason for decreasing numbers is past members not renewing. Francis is also working on contacting these people to find out why. People s lives change and organizations don t ful- fill their needs as they did before; single people get into relationships or even get married and do not have a need for a singles group. There are all kinds of reasons. You cannot look back but look forward and make sure we are doing all we can. For us to grow, there has never been a greater need for more people to assist us in presenting our singles organization as best we can. We just received hundreds of ASGA flyers and have many business cards for you to take to golf courses to put in their pro shops. Take a stack of our ASGA business cards and pass out to people you meet! We are also looking for other singles groups in town with whom we can have joint outings. If you, or your friends, have affiliations with other groups, including online dating services, we would welcome your assistance in bringing us together for an afternoon on the course. Of course, if you know of anyone who is a member of a private golf club, we would love to add that course to our calendar, which we try to upgrade each year. In closing what are YOU doing to increase the membership of this great singles golf group? If you enjoy this organization, find others that can also enjoy!! Please call me for the new flyers and busi- Upcoming Event: New Years in Florida Dec 29 - Jan 1 (location - TBD) National Website: www.singlesgolf.com National E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hous: 8:00-5:00 Monday - Friday National Hotline: 1-888-GOLFMATE (1-888-465-3628) To Join or renew, visit website and join online, or call our hotline. Well you should have been at Imperial Lakewoods Golf Club in Palmetto, Florida. The Tampa Bay chapter of ASGA had 43 players tee off at 1:00 at a course that is located at the southern end of Tampa Bay. This course has some uniquely designed holes that present a real challenge to the players, lots of water and plenty of fairway bunkers come into play. It was apparent that quite a few of the teams were up to the challenge as a lot of birdies were being posted on the score cards. The following players won awards at this event. Closet to the pin prizes were won by Janet Kruger for the ladies and Manus O Donnell for the men. The ladies long drive trophy was presented to Sandy Lindberg and the men s to Craig Malaney. Low score awards went to the following teams: 3 rd place Manus O Donnell, Edie Senensky and Robert Lang; 2 nd place was won by the team of JR Hurayt, Donna Esposito, Don Stegman and Betsy Schwartz. 1 st place finishers were Craig Malaney, Janet Kruger, Darlene Sonneveldt and Bill Pritchard. A tip of the golf cap to all the winners at this event. Next month s event is being played at Bloomingdale in Brandon. We will be using this outing to raise money to help a local charity. Bring your clubs, a friend, and a few extra dollars as we help those in our community who have real needs. See you there. SHOPPING AT BLOOMING- DALE S Are you shopping for pars, birdies or eagles? Then join us 1:00 pm on July 16 th at the Bloomingdale Golfers Club in Valrico, Florida for a great day of golf with your fellow Tampa ASGA members. This course has some very scenic holes with outstanding practice facilities including a huge putting green to sharpen your skills before the event. Please invite some guests to play the event with you, the more players we have the more fun we have. I am looking forward to playing this venue with you and the socializing after as there are a lot of good dining establishments in the Brandon and Valrico areas. 9 - n - DINE Please come join us on Friday the 21 st of July for our 9-n-DINE being played this month at the Babe Zaharias course in Tampa. We will meet beginning at 5:00 pm and send out groups on the course until everyone is paired up. After the round of golf we will gather at a local spot for dinner, refreshments and socializing. This is an informal event where you pay the course, you do not need to pre register but feel free to contact me at 727-518-1763 or email me at flbikeman@earttlink.net with any questions you may have. See you there. TAMPA S HAVING A HEAT WAVE The summer heat has arrived and we have the solution. Join us on Saturday, August 19, 2006 for the chapter s annual HEAT WAVE GOLF OUTING. The event will be held at Plantation Palms with a tee off at 12:30 pm followed by a pool party with lodging at the Best Western in Wesley Chapel. This event could be the highlight of your summer, playing golf with your fellow chapter members then an evening of

celebrating around the pool. A special prize will go to the ladies and men s golfer wearing the wildest shirt and hat. Sign up now to reserve your spot at this event. You must contact the Best Western directly to book your room--tell them that you are with the Tampa Bay Singles golf group--the room rate is $67.20 Best Western, 5639 Oakley Blvd., Wesley Chapel, Florida 33543, 813-345- 2000. IS GOLF YOUR MISSION IN LIFE? The Tampa Bay Golf Fall Fling in October is your place to be this year. This classic golf outing once again returns to the fabulous Mission Inn Resort at Howey in the Hills, Florida on October 20, 21, 22, 2006. Mission Inn is located north of Orlando in the center of Florida among the rolling hills with lakes and citrus groves. There are two courses at Mission Inn with the Saturday round being played on the El Campeon course and Sunday s round on the Los Colinas course. Both courses offer a multitude of challenges with high elevations, fast greens, deep bunkers and numerous ponds. This outing includes 2 nights lodging, 2 rounds of golf, 2 breakfast meals and a Saturday dinner with dancing and prizes. The accommodations at Mission Inn are first class including nicely appointed rooms, great outdoor pool area, and various restaurants. We had a lot of players from around Florida and also many out of state people enter last year so here is your chance to meet a lot of new golfers. This event is limited to 100 players so sign up quickly as this event will soon be fully booked. Please go to our website for complete information and the signup sheet at TampaBaySinglesGolf.com or contact Bill Pritchard at 727-518-1763 or JR Hurayt 727-391-7138 for information. The base price for this event is $335.00 for ASGA members with other options available. SOCIAL A great time was had by all at the Anclote Boat Trip. We had a lovely hour and a half out on the water with a sightseeing tour by the boat's captain. After the boat trip, we all adjourned to Costas Restaurant and had authentic, very good Greek cuisine. We even had a free glass of Greek wine! Our dessert needs were well taken care of at the famous Hellas bakery, where the only problem was choosing from the huge display of baked goods. Stay tuned for an upcoming theater event in the fall!! ~ Betsy Schwartz, Social Chairman MEMBERSHIP Our monthly meeting at Landry s was Tuesday, June 13, and the following guests attended: Janis Tietgens, Jim Spaugy, Colleen Morrisette, Gay Wiese, Gloria Peroda, Sandi Bourget, and Dennis Walch. We hope they come back and join us at future outings! This is a great club for social activities and golf. Our own community of single golfers requires nurturing. We have a turnover of members that move out of the area and who do not renew for many reasons. I am requesting that each member invite at least three friends to a meeting or function every month. Members, this is your community and it will not thrive unless we have new blood. It s up to you to distribute brochures at appropriate locations. Speak to other single golfers of all the functions we host. Talk about the national and regional outings at Mission Inn and Pinehurst. MEMBERSHIP CONTEST Invite, invite, SHARE your experiences of our fine group with everyone. A free dozen golf balls will be given to the member who has the most guests who enroll in ASGA. This is a monthly reward for our most productive members. INVITE FRIENDS. DON T BE SELFISH, WIN GOLF BALLS. ~ Francis Davanza. Membership Chairman Congratulations to Manus O Donnell, the winner of $44 for the 50/50 at the June meeting. ~ Phyllis Johnson PUBLIC RELATIONS I am working with The Tampa Tribune and St Petersburg Times on running a feature article on our group as well as event schedule notices. Please let me know if you might want to be highlighted in the article as the: Best swinger, straightest driver, and of course if the total number of months single exceeds your last score. Also please check your Single s Rules Book for this ruling: If your golfing partner hits on you, is that a penalty? If so, how many strokes and who gets the strokes? Also pick up the latest copy of Golfer s Guide and review our ad and feature story. ~ Kim Cox, Public Relations Chairman HANDICAP The most improved handicap players for June were Lynn Lupkes for the women and Virgil Price for the men. Each won a sleeve of balls. Continue posting your scores. If you need assistance contact me at orcalady@tampabay.rr.com. If you would like to participate for the rest of the year, send your check made out to Tampa bay ASGA and send to Edie Senensky at 351 Steeplechase Lane. Palm Harbor, FL 34684. The cost is $15.00 for the remainder of the year. ~ Cindy Simon, Handicap Chairman Don t Let Your Membership Lapse Call 1-888- GOLFMATE (1-888-465-3628)
